One of the things we love about our resource Philanthropy Journal is that we are able to provide a digital platform for writers who are addressing some very important issues that impact our communities like the issue of depression and anxiety. Thanks to Bradi Nathan of The Happy Jack Group LLC for writing this incredibly powerful piece about her son and founder of Happy Jack, Jack Nathan.

How does one write a story about a boy who lived only nineteen years? Just nineteen. I will try.

Introducing "PHI·LAN·THRO·POL·O·GIST"

A revolution is coming and Philanthropy Journal is leading the charge. PJ is changing the way we understand the world through provocative storytelling. Each issue of the "PHI·LAN·THRO·POL·O·GIST" offers a depth of understanding of place beyond what the rest of the world may be seeing in the news.

In Issue 1 we bring to life the beautiful island of Puerto Rico through bold storytelling and thought provoking pieces crafted by people in and of Puerto Rico. Read pieces from former San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz, the Community Foundation of Puerto Rico, poet/activist Caridad De La Luz, and more. Learn about Puerto Rico’s vibrant culture through the arts, baseball, and, of course, coffee.

“You can choose to pay me or not pay me,” explains Speakhire ‘s Hetal Jani. “Either way, I’m still going to do the work. It needs to be done. I see this need, I know how to fill it. Get on board and support it.”

https://philanthropyjournal.com/try-again-next-year/

Capacity building for a nonprofit organization means funding; staff; administrative overhead. It means having the capacity to do the work that needs to be done. Hetal Jani is no stranger to this fact.

“Due to the stigma I held about therapy, it took me decades before I finally decided to seek it,” says Sheila Darcey, founder of SketchPoetic. Crippling anxiety had seeped into every facet of her life. Darcey tried several ways to release the deeply held emotions within her - yoga, meditation, exercise, etc. While these tools can be powerful in alleviating the symptoms of chronic anxiety, it was sketching that helped her counter the heaviness of what she was feeling.

How often do we allow ourselves to get lost in the moment? To take a detour beyond our best laid plans and to do so without expectations or a wanting in our hearts?

Spend even just a minute speaking with Edna Ogwangi, and her passion for her work knocks you off your feet. Since 2015, she has served as Rise Against Hunger’s Chief Programs Officer, leading their impact programming and driving the organization’s work to advance food security, humanitarian relief and resilience in communities across the globe.

Edna Ogwangi works intentionally to mitigate bias and support gender equality in Rise Against Hunger’s programs. “When voices of individuals who know the problem, understand the context and have lived experiences in the community we are trying to support are left out or not given an opportunity ...

It seems rather titanic that humanity could ever pull off a global transformative change at the needed speed if we want to stop climate change and our own destruction. But we don’t have another option. The thought of doing nothing is scarier.

https://philanthropyjournal.com/the-web-of-life/

We humans have created a global net on top of the real web of life, but instead of working towards protecting and encouraging life we’ve decided to destroy it.

The battle to determine our nation’s character is evident in that historically every advance that African Americans have made in the fight towards full and equal representation in the land of our birth, has been followed by a well-orchestrated and virulent rebuke of that advance.

The North Carolina Black Alliance views these upheavals not simply as the unmasking of the real America, but as yet another cycle in the struggle that has existed since the genesis of the movement for Black freedom and equality.

https://philanthropyjournal.com/really-becoming-america/

The tumult of the past several years is about really becoming America. It is about the struggle to create America in the image of all its citizens, one that is inclusive and guarantees equal rights for all, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, or religious belief.

Saying what needs to be said can be a very delicate operation for some people whose work and livelihood may depend upon the power dynamics that are often at play in the philanthropic space.

We are grateful to Overture Outreach International‘s Lisa Hyatt for crafting this excellent reminder that the best way to affect change in communities, foreign or domestic, is to invest in building up people in these areas for a sustainable and prosperous future:

Yesterday marked 4 years since the horrific events unfolded at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. In response to losing his son Joaquin, Manuel Oliver and his wife Patricia have dedicated their lives to advocating for changes in gun legislation through their organization Change the Ref.

Yesterday morning, Mr. Oliver climbed atop a construction crane near the White House to demand greater action be taken towards gun control. We had the opportunity to speak with Mr. Oliver earlier this winter. Learn how one man has turned immeasurable grief into action:

Dr. Cameron lived to fulfill his dream of educating his fellow citizens about seldom-told parts of U.S. history. He firmly believed that by learning together, by growing in the knowledge of our country’s truths, by understanding and reconciling with each other, we Americans can help our beautiful but flawed democracy achieve its founding ideals of liberty and justice for all.
