"Josh, your mom’s gone," my dad said one day after coming home. I was just eight, and even though my mom had been in the hospital for a while, I clung to the hope that she’d come back. His words hit hard, and they've echoed in my mind ever since. I wasn’t even given a chance to say goodbye. Before I could process anything, dad packed us up and moved us to a new city, calling it a “fresh start.” A few days after the move, a woman named Erika showed up at our place. My dad introduced her as his “friend.” Just a couple of months later, they were married. Over time, it was clear that accepting Erika as my mom just wasn’t happening. She never tried, either—in fact, she made it clear she didn’t like me. Our fights got so bad that I eventually ran away and returned to my old hometown.
