SC to take call on listing of pleas challenging Article 370

New Delhi Feb 17 : The Supreme Court on Friday said it would take a call on listing for hearing a batch of petitions challenging the abrogation of Article 370 and bifurcation of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union territories.

"I will take a call on it," said a bench headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud as senior advocate Raju Ramachandran mentioned the matter for urgent listing of the case. The matter was mentioned before many times for urgent listing but it could not be taken up.

The petitions which are pending since 2019 have not been taken up for hearing since March 2020. Various petitions are pending before the top court challenging the validity of the law scrapping Article 370 of the Constitution of India and special status to Jammu and Kashmir and bifurcating the state into two Union Territories.

On August 5 2019, the Central government announced its decision to revoke the special status of Jammu and Kashmir granted under Article 370 and split the region into two Union territories.

A five-judge Constitution bench in March 2020 had declined to refer to a larger 7-judge bench a batch of petitions challenging the Constitutional validity of the Centre's decision to abrogate provisions of Article 370 on August 5, saying there were no reasons to refer the matter to a larger bench.

A number of petitions have been filed in the top court including those of private individuals, lawyers, activists and politicians and political parties challenging the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, which splits Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.

Encroachers along water bodies in Pulwama asked to remove illegal structures in a week

Pulwama, Feb 13 (KNO): Irrigation Department has asked the encroachers over water bodies in this south Kashmir's Pulwama district to remove the illegal structures within a period of seven days, failing which strict action would be taken.

According to a notice, a copy of which lies with the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), the people who have encroached over the irrigation land in the district have been asked to remove encroachments within seven days.

"If any person fails to remove the encroachment, the department would swing into action and people have to pay the charges of the same,” it said. “Strict action under the law would be taken against the people who fail to remove illegal encroachments within a stipulated time.”

An official of the Irrigation Department told KNO that hundreds of kanals of land are dependent on these water bodies for irrigation purposes besides that dozens of water supply schemes are dependent on them but on both sides of these water bodies, illegal structures have been erected. “Even trees lying there can prove dangerous sometimes,” he added.

People at some spots have kept their bathroom pipes towards these water bodies which must be stopped as well and people must behave responsibly, the official said, adding that if people fail to demolish the illegal structures and cut down trees, action as per the law will be taken against them.

Under the Water Resources Management Act 2010, encroachers can be booked for one year and a fine of Rs 10,000 can be imposed against them, he said. “Rs 1000 fine per day will be imposed on the encroacher till he/she doesn’t clear the illegally-occupied irrigation land,” the official said—(KNO)

Just IN:__Iran to supply with 15,000 drones, official says

An Iranian official has revealed that China is one of the leading customers of Iranian-manufactured drones and that a large shipment is set to be sent to Beijing, amid the ongoing controversy over Tehran's supply of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to Russia.

According to the UK-based news outlet, Iran International, an unnamed advisor to Iran's Intelligence Minister revealed at a ceremony at Qazvin International University that China is in the "queue" to receive 15,000 Iranian drones, with the ally being a major customer amongst 90 countries seeking to benefit from Tehran's extensive UAV industry.

"Since the day we turned to the East, the West could not bear it and an example was the war in Ukraine", the advisor said, referring to Iran's arming of Russia with drones throughout its ongoing invasion of Ukraine.

When Tehran's role in militarily supplying Moscow was revealed months into the war last year, it at first denied it before admitting to it with the claim that it did so months before Russia launched its invasion.

Since then, however, Iran has only deepened its cooperation with the Kremlin by continuing its drone supplies to Russian forces, with the Wall Street Journal reporting this month that the two allies are moving ahead with plans to build a new factory within Russia that could produce at least 6,000 Iranian-designed drones for Moscow's war effort.

Numerous Western nations have imposed sanctions on Iran over its active assistance, and the United States has curbed exports to Iranian firms responsible for producing the drones using American components.
