Get ready for a sneak peek of Homecoming Book 2, coming soon!
After several hours, I returned to the island just in time to catch the last ferry, but I missed cousin Richard. He was old and had low night vision, so he didn’t drive past four p.m. on weekdays. Sundown had already passed, and it was now dark before six. I needed to clear my head, so I asked the Uber driver to drop me off a short distance from Big Mama's house. Something about her presence made it difficult for me to think clearly; it was as if she could read my thoughts. As I walked down the lane, surrounded by ancient bearded trees that held the rich history of this place, I wondered what stories they could speak if they had wisdom and knowledge. At that moment, I yearned for some guidance or advice. Unlike the bustling city, I found a peacefulness here that surpassed understanding. Even the sounds around me were different, untouched by the noises and lights of the city's pollution. Time stood still here in the small hammock of Potash Road. For years on end, the surrounding landscape remained untouched, preserving its original charm.
Standing proudly in isolation, Big Mama's house stood as the sole structure for miles around.
Once bustling with activity, the other cabins had long disappeared, swallowed by the sands of time.
While Savannah's fierce storms and hurricanes wreaked havoc, Big Mama's humble abode miraculously stood resilient, withstanding the fury of winds and floods. It became the symbolic
sanctuary, a shelter in a storm, the epitome of a safe harbor amidst the chaos and turbulence of nature's wrath and my discontent.
As a gentle breeze wafted through the air, it carried the
enchanting aroma of Bouganvilla and wood smoke. The night, alive with distant stars, created a breathtaking tapestry against the darkness. Words failed me when trying to express the
tranquility of this place as if any description would be an understatement. But I found the peace I needed to regroup and gather my thoughts. As I strolled along the familiar road, a sudden noise from above caught my attention. Startled, I tilted my head to gaze at the mesmerizing starry sky.
To my relief, it was just a night hawk swooping down to catch its evening meal. There was no reason to be afraid. This path has been my companion countless times in daylight and darkness.
It has provided me solace and solitude for deep contemplation, just like today. Even though the answers may not be immediately clear, I am confident that they will eventually come to light.
Even if I don't like the answer to the most troubling issue, that leaves me wondering who the heck did I marry?
