Here's the deal. A scanner darkly is an intelligent and stylistic approach to a narcotics story. It dives into substance abuse from someone who clearly had a past with abuse and highlights the interesting dichotomy/duality of policemen/undercover agents and junkies. I found myself laughing audibly at some of what Jim Barris would do, (arguably I did this because I know in the movie adaptation he's played by while the main character is played by ) and feeling the intense dichotomy of Bob Arctor and Fred.

Having a past with substance abuse in my early years, (before I knew many of you) I've always had the approach that junkies are just like ordinary people. In fact, I used to really enjoy the company I kept because they were so lively and interesting in comparison to some of the mundane snobs we see on our daily basis, this of course assumes they have not been completely brain rotten. Getting high made the most boring of tasks so much more interesting, but this escapism that plagues us is fundamentally a choice. It was something I chose to do, (were all slaves to our desires in some form. Yes even you.) And to watch Philip K Dick write so eloquently about what felt like a past memory really gave this book a special spot in my heart, (not to mention the German interludes to the story of faust woven into the novel).

I highly recommend this book to anyone who feels controlled by a substance in any shape way or form. It may give you a melancholic conclusion, but it's never too late.
