Amanda S. C. Gorman is an American poet and activist. Her work focuses on issues of oppression, feminism, race and marginalization, as well as the African diaspora. Gorman was the first person to be named National Youth Poet Laureate.

Gorman is a Cum Laude graduate of Harvard University who read her original poetry at President Biden’s inauguration in 2021; the youngest inaugural poet in U.S. history.

Prior to that, in 2017, Gorman was named the first-ever National Youth Poet Laureate by Urban Word.

Jarena Lee was the first African-American woman to write and publish a spiritual autobiography, The Life and Religious Experience. She was also the firest female preacher in the African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church. Born into a free Black family in New Jersey, she became a Christian in 1804 and felt a calling to preach. Despite facing opposition, she began her evangelical career, traveling extensively and preaching to diverse audiences. Her autobiography, "The Life and Religious Experience of Jarena Lee," published in 1849, detailed her life and work. Lee's persistence and contribution to the expansion of women's roles within the AME church make her a significant figure in African American history and an early advocate for women in ministry.

Lee's story is one of resiliency, optimism, and spirituality, representing an important example of transcending traditional gender roles and touching the hearts, minds, and souls of many. Her legacy as the first African American woman preacher is deeply rooted in African American history and culture.

House of Inspire celebrates the contributions of African-Americans in American literary during Black History Month.

Today we focus on Phillis Wheatley.

Born around 1753 in West Africa, enslaved and brought to America in 1761, she was purchased by the Wheatley family in Boston, where she received an unprecedented education for an enslaved person, learning to read and write at a young age.

Wheatley became the first African American woman and the third American woman to publish a book of poems, "Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral," in 1773. Her work reflected influences from well-known poets she studied, such as Alexander Pope and Thomas Gray, as well as pride in her African heritage.

Despite being enslaved, she gained recognition as a poet and was emancipated shortly after the publication of her book. Wheatley's legacy has inspired generations of writers, and she is widely recognized as a significant figure in American literary history.

House of Inspire celebrates Black history month by honoring Black Americans contributions to the literary world and more.

We were inspired by today's Google Doodle to celebrate novelist and essayist of considerable renown, James Baldwin.

To quote playwright and critic, Walter Joseph Meserve, regarding Baldwin's work, "... People are important to Baldwin, and their problems, generally embedded in their agonizing souls, stimulate him to write. ... A humanitarian, sensitive to the needs and struggles of man, he writes of inner turmoil, spiritual disruption, the consequence upon people of the burdens of the world, both White and Black.”

In honor of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, a day of service, we honor his dream.

Dr. King's most memorable speech was "I Have A Dream" delivered during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom on August 28, 1963, and is one of the most iconic and influential speeches in American history. The speech is a powerful call for racial equality and an end to discrimination, passionately advocates for civil and economic rights for all Americans, and an end to racism in the United States.

The speech concludes on a note of hope and determination, with King expressing faith that one day, freedom and equality will be realities for all in America. This speech is celebrated for its vision, eloquence, and its pivotal role in the American Civil Rights Movement for
