Showering in violet, you flowerbed my home.

Tonight’s so cold
my eye’s a stone. Alone.

Two bright stars mark far points on my frosted window.
I assign them us.

Mine bristles atop the city;
yours roves over your country home.

We are, anyhow, two scrappy flashes
scratched from historically black ground.
Then,
something nothing holds my heated breath
captive here where fronts converge
gargantuans of empty space
implode while feeble lights
of dawn play god on
growing fingers spread thin frost
across glass to sculpt a crystal
lattice ladder spread between our flaming worlds.

How quick the chemistry dissolves
I see clearly
how perfect you are indeed.

I just learned that Alice Munro died this week. I often taught her story “The Bear Came Over the Mountain,” a tale of a couple and their lives after dementia. I love all of her work; I (and so many others) have never read more excellent fiction—-fiction you can analyze for technique and skill, or just laze in for hours, sentence by sentence.

Fly high, Alice. Your imprint will never be forgotten.
