Scores were killed or injured in Itaewon, Yongsan District, Saturday night as a deadly crush occurred during a Halloween celebration.

Fire authorities said that more than 100 people were found in a state of cardiac arrest, which is how emergency services in Korea initially report apparent deaths.

As of 1 a.m., three deaths were confirmed.

An avalanche of people — around 100,000 according to the local press — marched into the neighborhood frequented by expatriates to celebrate Halloween, which falls on Oct. 31.

Photos shared online showed more than a dozen bodies covered in blankets.

A Seoul resident caught in the crush before it turned deadly said that people were trying to leave the pedestrian street that runs down the middle of bar and restaurant area of Itaewon via side streets and were met by a rush of people trying equally hard to get in.

He said that the crowd trying to exit on small side street next to the Hamilton Hotel was struggling to get out and panicked already when he was trying to get through. Some people, he said, were in tears.

"It was people fighting to leave and people fighting to get in," the witness said.

President Yoon Suk-yeol ordered officials to administer first aid and treat the people, the presidential office said.

Seoul city Mayor Oh Se-hoon cut short his visit to Europe upon hearing the reports.

“You may feel void without me but please stay strong,” she wrote.
Yoo Ju-eun stressed that she is “very calm” and “not sad at all,” adding that she was content with the life she lived.

“This is enough. So please don’t blame anyone and move on,” part of her note also stated.
Yoo Ju-eun also spoke about how it had not been easy for her to pursue acting, which she regarded as her “everything” and “a part of her.” She then expressed gratitude to those who supported her and those who she experienced life with.

A 41-year-old mother was sentenced to 20 years in prison on Wednesday for murdering her two young sons due to financial constraints.

The Seoul Southern District Court found the mother, whose identity has been withheld, guilty of murdering her children ― aged 8 and 7 ― at their home last April.

The mother attempted su***de after the murder but failed, court documents showed.

"The defendant went through difficulties and suffered anxiety, but the court cannot accept whether the level was serious enough for her to take this extreme choice," the court said in the ruling.

President Moon Jae-in on Thursday said that the country will cooperate with the international community, including measures such as sanctions against Russia, following Russian attack on Ukraine.

Tensions between Moscow and Kyiv are at their highest in years after Russian troops launched their anticipated attack on Ukraine on the day.

“The use of force that causes innocent casualties cannot be justified under any circumstances,” Moon said in the afternoon after receiving a report from the head of the National Security Office regarding the Ukraine incident. “Despite the continued warnings from the international community and efforts to resolve through diplomacy, the feared armed invasion occurred in Ukraine.”

He said, “As a responsible member of the international community, South Korea will support and join the international community’s efforts, including economic sanctions, to curb armed invasion and resolve the situation peacefully.

Earlier in the morning, the Foreign Ministry released a statement saying the South Korean government is closely discussing countermeasures with its allies, including the US, in a situation where Russia’s invasion of Ukraine can be seen as “imminent.”

“Despite repeated warnings from the international community, if Russia engages in any form of all-out war, it is clear that the Korean government will have no choice but to participate in sanctions such as export controls against Russia,” the ministry said.

The government said it would “review and find possible ways to minimize the damage to the Korean economy and businesses” that may be caused by these measures.

The South Korean Embassy in Ukraine urged Korean residents to move safe places, saying all employees of the Russian Embassy have left Ukraine and the possibility of Russia’s invasion is increasing.

“All employees of the Russian Embassy and consulate in Ukraine left the country in a hurry on (Feb.) 23 (local time),” the Korean Embassy in Ukraine said in an emergency notice posted on its website. “It was further confirmed that embassy staff of some other countries also stopped working in a hurry and left Kyiv.”

The embassy said the seriousness of the situation is very high, and the possibility of Russia’s attack is also increasing.

“Considering the urgent changes in the situation, we strongly recommend that Korean residents still staying in Ukraine be fully prepared to move quickly to a safe area in case of an emergency.”

The embassy also asked the remaining Korean residents to keep in touch with the embassy.

At the end of last month, the number of Koreans residing in Ukraine reached 600. However, after the government issued a travel warning level 4 throughout Ukraine on Feb. 13, most of them have been evacuated to safe areas.

Currently, 64 Korean residents are in Ukraine. The number excludes 10 Koreans from the Crimean Peninsula and government officials. Thirty-six people are expected to leave the country soon, but the rest are reportedly hoping to remain.

The military authorities plan to deploy military transport planes to evacuate Korean citizens staying in Ukraine in case of an emergency.

Defense Ministry spokesman Boo Seung-chan said on Tuesday, “The Ministry of National Defense will actively cooperate to transfer overseas Koreans when requested in connection with this situation,” adding, “We are maintaining a close cooperation system with related agencies and countries.”

A Filipino woman has been arrested by the police after she murdered the 3-year-old son of an acquaintance of an American soldier in South Korea and roamed downtown naked.

Byun hee-soo, a 23-year-old transgender former soldier forced to discharge from the Army last year, was found dead at her home, police said Wednesday.

A patient of a long-term care hospital here with multiple underlying diseases died Wednesday after receiving the AstraZeneca vaccine against COVID-19, officials said.

The 50-something patient was vaccinated Tuesday morning at the hospital in Goyang, just outside of Seoul's northwestern border.

The patient began to show symptoms of heart failure and difficulty in breathing by the afternoon but recovered after being put under emergency care.

The symptoms recurred Wednesday morning before the patient died.

Health officials said they have yet to determine whether the patient suffered side effects from the vaccine.

The patient's preexisting conditions included heart problems, diabetes and a stroke.

The woman was brought to trial for pulling her mother-in-law's hair, throwing her to the ground and spitting in her face on April 13, 2019.

The assailant did so in a fit of anger after she learned that she had contracted a s*xually transmitted disease from her husband who had had unprotected s*x with the pr******te.

While assaulting the mother-in-law, the assailant reportedly said "You deserve punishment because you raised your son wrong."

The 56-year-old also made a video call to her husband to show him the scene in which she made the mother-in-law kneel down and threatened the old woman with a weapon.

The 89-year-old suffered injuries, including concussion, requiring two weeks of medical treatment in hospital.

During trial, the 56-year-old claimed she had only visited her mother-in-law and made a video call to her husband to ask him not to have an affair again, rejecting all the charges against her.

But the court found her guilty based on testimonies from police officers who responded to the scene.

"The assailant rejected the charges against her and did not show regret for her wrongdoing despite injuring her aged mother-in-law and threating her with a weapon," the court said in its verdict. "She has also failed to receive the forgiveness of the victim."

A man in his 40s died in an apparent su***de inside a shopping mall on Yeouido, Seoul, according to police, Monday.

He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival.

There were a considerable number of visitors inside the shopping mall when the man died, with some people witnessing the scene firsthand.

"We are investigating details of the case including why the man jumped," a police official said.

IFC Mall is a three-story facility ― from the first basement level to the third basement level ― and the three floors are connected with a large open space at the center. There are 1.2-meter-high guardrails along the edges, which meet the standard of the relevant law.

[I was wearing only one thin underwear. Yesterday, the weather was very cold, so I was trembling.]

Yesterday, when the minimum temperature in Seoul dropped more than -10 degrees below zero, the child came out into the street wearing underwear and was found at this point about 50m away from the house.

The child told the police who had been dispatched, "My mother drove me out."

However, the mother insists that the child went out alone, not that she was driven out.

The government has been urged to act against fake Korean brands that have thrived in other countries over the past few years.

In a report last week, the National Assembly Budget Office asked the Korea Customs Service (KCS) to take stronger action against sellers of "low-quality, fake Korean products" overseas, mostly in Southeast Asia, where K-pop and K-dramas have become wildly popular.

The report specifically mentions Mumuso, which claims to be a Korean retailer, even without a sales office in Korea. Mumuso is headquartered in Shanghai and most of its products are made in China.

Capitalizing on hallyu, or the Korean cultural wave, Mumuso has successfully promoted itself as a Korean brand and expanded its business to many countries, including India, Canada and Vietnam.

"Low-quality products of fake Korean companies could undermine foreign customers' trust in Korea and Korean products," the report says. "The KCS should look into whether such brands violate international trade rules or copyright laws in the countries where they operate … The KCS should also come up with ways to raise awareness of the issue overseas."

According to the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA), Ilahui, Mini Good and Yoyoso are among the Chinese copycat businesses popping up across Asia.

"Such companies create a false impression that their products are manufactured, designed and sold in Korea. They put signs such as "KR" and "KOREA" on their products in an apparent effort to make them look like Korean products; or they play K-pop music at their stores," the KOTRA's Philippines office says on its website.

Authorities in some countries have taken notice of the problem. The ABS-CBN News, a media outlet in the Philippines, reported on May 28 that the nation's Food and Drug Administration started advising people to be vigilant against fake Korean brands, saying sellers could face regulatory action.

More PR effort also seems to be needed, as some media outlets, including the Times of India, have falsely called Mumuso a Korean brand.

Heavy snow closed off roads in parts of South Korea and cold-related accidents were reported as a cold wave continued to grip the nation.

The Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters said on Thursday that snow fell in the capital region, western parts of Gangwon Province, in the Chungcheong and Jeolla provinces and on Jeju Island.

In particular, Gimje in North Jeolla Province received 17-point-six centimeters of snow as of 5 a.m., while Seoul's Seocho district had ten-point-seven centimeters.

Cold wave advisories are also in place for the central region as well as Jeolla and North Gyeongsang provinces, with the mercury plunging to minus 17-point-three degrees Celsius in Dongducheon in Gyeonggi Province, and minus 16-point-nine degrees in Seoul.

The freezing weather led to a report of 274 cases of water gauges freezing and bursting from across the nation.

Heavy snow closed off 12 roads nationwide, including five in South Jeolla, four in South Gyeongsang and three in South Chungcheong Province.

As of 11 a.m., 72 flights were canceled at 14 airports around the nation, including at Gimpo and Jeju.
