Harbor Pilots Help Connect Hainan with the World
No matter its port of origin, whenever a cargo ship docks at Yangpu Port, Lin Hongpin—a senior pilot at #Hainan Pilot Station—or someone like him takes a runabout out to meet them and boards the ship by climbing up a more than 20m long rope ladder. Depending on the size of the ship and specific harbor conditions at the time, the pilot may take over from the captain at operating the cargo ship, direct the captain, or turn the engine off and call for a tugboat. Whichever the case may be, the key part of his job is ensuring that the ship safely enters port. #ChasingDreamsintheHainanFTP
Harbor Pilots play a very important role in guiding ships through the surprisingly complicated environment of a busy port; and, whenever a pilot goes out, his sole purpose is to ensure the safe arrival and berthing of ships. As of right now, Mr. Lin is one of only 25 harbor pilots in Hainan.
What exactly does a harbor pilot do when he takes over from a captain? "The techniques that go into helping a large ship dock are superficially similar to when a driver is backing a car into a cramped space in an underground parking garage,” said Mr. Lin. However, pilotage work carries a much higher risk. Not only must the pilot be intimately familiar with a wide variety of ships and their steering systems, he also needs to know everything about the hydrological environment of the port where he works. Whether accelerating or slowing down, a ship is multiple orders of magnitude more complex than a car with its gas and brake pedals. Additionally, water navigation is nothing like wheels on land. In addition to facing waves and hidden currents, a ship in motion tends to stay in motion. Large ships cost hundreds of millions of dollars and a tiny slip-up can cause astronomical losses. If the ship in question is a crude oil or natural gas tanker, the consequences are even more disastrous.

Gen Z Post-Doc & Rice Researcher Chases Dream at HNBM
Arriving in #Hainan three years ago, Xiao Feng is a postdoctoral fellow at the Nanjing Agricultural University Sanya Research Institute. Referring to himself as a seed that has not yet sprouted, seeds are Xiao Feng's passion in life. #ChasingDreamsintheHainanFTP
Thanks to the excellent light and heat conditions, Sanya is a perfect location for seed breeding work. Every winter and spring, scientific and technological personnel from hundreds of agricultural research institutions across the country gather in Sanya to engage in the work of crop improvement. Nanfan is the Chinese abbreviation for a method of crop breeding and seed selection where various northern crops are planted in the south in order to speed up the cycle. The Hainan National Breeding and Multiplication Base (HNBM) at Sanya Yazhou Bay Science and Technology City is one of the primary locations for nanfan work and the experimental fields are filled with scientific researchers and their crops.
"We can use the age of rice leaves to determine which growth period they’re in, and then implement appropriate cultivation measures.” Squatting in a field, Dr. Xiao carefully observes a rice plant. According to him, “if everything goes right, it takes seven or eight years to come up with an improved varietal. However, because Hainan’s winters are mild and sunny, we can often grow three generations of crops in a single year.” At HNBM, seeds and crop researchers travel back and forth between the north and Hainan and Hainan and the north. A bit like snowbirds coming south for the winter, until a new varietal is successfully cultivated, they leave and arrive and leave again on a set schedule.
Although Sanya has beaches and nightlife to offer tourists, the life of HNBM researchers tends to be limited to their experimental fields, labs, and the places in between. Dr. Xiao believes that the biggest prerequisite to successful scientific research is the ability to concentrate, to persist, to stubbornly wait for
The rural revitalization 'Road to Wealth' of a Li dance coach
Moving the bamboo poles, squatting, jumping, and moving back into position... the Maona Village Song and Dance Troupe enthusiastically performs the Firewood Dance, also known as the Bamboo Pole Dance, under the leadership of Wang Zhengzhu. #Hainan #ChasingDreamsintheHainanFTP
Wang Zhengzhu, from Maona Village, Shuiman Township, Wuzhishan City, is the head of the Maona Village Song and Dance Troupe, a commercial dance troupe that pays locals for participating in performances in the hopes of bringing more travelers to the village. At 7 p.m., Wang ‘clocks in’ for work in Maona Village. To give visitors an excellent opportunity to enjoy the local village customs, the troupe rehearses their original dance programs almost every night.
The song and dance troupe plays an important role in what Maona has to offer travelers, performing more than ten dances based on traditional local Li and Miao culture during each 90 minute long show. “The performances are deeply entwined with the development of Maona Village, reflect our lives and hopes, and show the incredible changes that have swept Maona.” According to Wang, the troupe performed for seven days during the National Day Holiday last year, with each member earning over 1,000 yuan. He looks forward to taking the troupe on the road in the future so that more people can learn about the village of Maona through their energetic cultural performances.
Wang has lived in Maona since childhood. The village, located deep in the mountains, is 38 km. from Wuzhishan City. ‘Nine tenths mountain and one tenth arable land’ is an apt description of the area. Wang was once famous in the village for being lazy — on his land, the weeds were taller than the tea trees. Then in 2014, with the assistance of the Maona Village poverty alleviation team and village cadres, Wang returned to his long-abandoned tea plantation and began raising chickens, ducks, and geese, while also finding work at a Shuiman Township hotel.

Forest Guardian Protects Hainan's Natural Environment
It’s 5:00 am in the morning. Although the rest of his village is still sleeping, Wei Fuliang has not only woken up and eaten breakfast but already taken his motorcycle deep into the forest. #ChasingDreamsintheHainanFTP
Wei works as a ranger in the Bawangling Ridge Section of the #Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park. He is also a member of the Hainan Gibbon Monitoring Team. Helping protect the natural environment, his father was also forest rangers.
Dawn has not yet lit up the sky when Wei arrives at the monitoring point. One of the places Hainan Gibbons are often seen, his job involves using their early morning calls to track the gibbons’ location. As a member of the Gibbon Monitoring Team, the wee hours of the morning are the most important part of his day. Explaining why, Wei Fuliang said: "One of the Hainan Gibbons’ particular characteristics is that they only call to each other in the early morning when foraging. As a result, this is effectively the only time we can track them; and, if we fail to find them right away, it may be another day or more before the next time.”
Tracking the gibbons is the key to monitoring them. As part of determining a given gibbon troop’s location, monitoring team members often split into several groups.
The sun creeps over the horizon and the world gradually grows brighter. Once Wei has successfully found where the gibbons are that day's monitoring work officially begins. Like a personal servant, he follows closely behind them recording their daily activities. How many individuals are in this gibbon troop; how old are they; what color is their fur; do they have any distinctive markings or behavior; what are they eating and how much; when are they drinking and how much; and where and when they urinate and defecate are just some of the information that Wei collects. His tasks not only include recording details such as their activity areas, the fruits selected, and the social relationships between troop members but al
