Join us for an untraditional yet still very special tropical holiday abroad in the Bahamas. Most of our regular traditions aren't feasible so we've gotten creative to make the day feel different and festive. We're swapping the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade for an underwater snorkel fish "parade." It's a very different celebration from years past. If you enjoy this video, make sure to come back for part 2 this Thursday.

After a wild and rocky ride in the ocean, we made it to the Bahamas!

We survived the ocean, but Kelly's favorite mini bananas did not and the salty ocean water found it's way inside the cabin for an extra "fun" surprise upon arrival.

Although our boat is no longer bouncing sideways, our legs are jelly and things are taking some time to go back to normal.

Join us for a video that starts as Kelly is reluctantly waiting "patiently" in the boat unable to step off onto the dock, since only one person is allowed to step off the boat to get us cleared into the country, and ends at our first anchorage in the Bahamas.

One of the things I miss about land life is my plants. I’ve always tried to keep some sort of veggie garden rolling and eventually I started collecting indoor plants from our travels. The third picture is a plant I snipped from the Salt Lake City Airport flying back from a ski trip.

Someday soon I’ll have my outdoor and indoor gardens again, but for now I’ll continue to appreciate the foliage instead of cultivating.

In last week's video, we left off at "dinner" at sea on day 3 of our (quite rough) 5 day sailing journey in the Atlantic to the Bahamas.

This week join us for PART 2 where we are still at sea, but starting to scan the horizon for much desired land and chatting with you about what it has been like. This was Kelly's first time sailing offshore.

Once we get there the water color changes drastically from sapphire blue to aquamarine.

Let us know in the comments whether you prefer the sapphire blue water that's found far out in the ocean or the aquamarine water we sail into on arrival in t...

The day after Hurricane Nicole passed by us in Beaufort, NC we made our way into the Atlantic to start our 5 day ocean passage to the Bahamas.

Let's just say the seas were not glassy and smooth...

Before we could head south, we had to sail east quite a ways offshore to cross the Gulf Stream and saw almost no vessels of any kind after that.

Our furthest point offshore was about 250 miles.

Come along in this video to get a glimpse of what the first few days of life at sea were like.

It's a really good thing that we didn't leave for the Bahamas earlier. If we had left when we had planned we'd be hunkered down in a late season hurricane in the islands. We much prefer hunkering down in a marina just inland of the North Carolina barrier islands. Join us as we wait out the storm and get our last few provisioning tasks done so we're ready to set off into the Atlantic ocean for a multi-day sailing passage to the Bahamas right after the storm.

I honestly need to get better about taking pictures of our boat. Every time someone asks to see a picture of it I have to hunt and hunt for one and usually it’s one a friend took while we were leaving the marina. She does look pretty spiffy in the morning light.

I’m not a morning person, but all the dramatic colors and clouds in the sky at sunrise give me all the motivation I need. The cute walking buddy helps too 🥰. The ocean looks a lot calmer than the last time we were in it.

Although the evening was so pretty, it was a terrible place for a mosquito magnet to hang out in. If you're the person all the mosquitoes flock to, then you know exactly what I mean.

It's a quick stop before we move on to a the next anchorage smack dab in a service dead zone, but totally worth it for the "company" we meet on arrival and hang out with on the SUP.

Even though we hit a log with the propeller, exiting the Dismal Swamp Canal in the misty and rainy morning was gorgeous.

We've stopped off at a free dock in a place called Elizabeth City, although I wouldn't use the term "city" to describe this place.

Along the way we meet some interesting people and do a little "city" exploration. A nice little bit of civilization before we continue on our journey south to stage for the Atlantic.

In the most recent video upload, we're officially 100% out of the Chesapeake Bay. Since the weather doesn’t look like we’ll be able to head offshore yet and it is COLD, we’ve decided to stage for the ocean part of the journey a little further south.

This change of plans takes us inland through the very shallow and very narrow Dismal Swamp Canal. A functioning reliable engine plus a good set of eyes is necessary to navigate our way through this.

So this week join us as we navigate the Dismal Swap Canal with only a few surprises…🤪

A dolphin es**rt was needed (yes, we got dolphins on video) for morale and very much appreciated.

We made it across the channel, without any intercepting submarine traffic, to a marina so the boat isn't dragging anywhere.

Join us as we explore the Hampton area and George gets to work on the solar panels.

As you'll see the morning was gorgeous and calm (we finally broke out the drone).

That didn't last long. It was a tiring day.

When we dropped anchor in Solomons, Maryland we had planned to pick up and leave first thing the next morning.

The forecast was completely lacking wind, so we decided to stay and explore for a day.

It was a great decision and led to a day full of unexpected surprises...the good kind for a change.

After setbacks kept us from leaving earlier this year, we're finally on our way and sailing south.

Unfortunately it's not all carefree and smooth even on day one.

Just before we finished our first day of the trip we encountered an unexpected and unwelcome surprise.

We are on a boat so we fully expect something to pop up and need attention, but it's not what we wanted this quickly into the journey when we just want to get moving.

Our aim was to leave this past summer. It's now almost November* and things keep popping up requiring us to push our date of departure back.

We're now to the point that we have picked an exact and specific date.

We're quickly pushing through the last bit of preparations so we can leave on time and on our date.

Last minute set backs abound.

In this video, we were just days away from casting off the lines and beginning nomadic sailing life. Lots is going on and needs to get done.

It can be a bit overwhelming. We're tackling replacement of some water damaged veneer to spruce things up and also stop wood veneer pieces from chipping off each time we open the drawers.

Stick around to the end to see what it looks like once he's done the install. We also still need to empty our vehicles because we need to sell them before we leave. What comes out of the vehicles needs to find a home on the boat. George had a lot more stuff than I thought still packed in his truck.

We started with 2 anchors, some chain, and some rode (rope)... We replaced the old chain with a new longer chain, added a third heavier anchor, and decided to upgrade from the old windlass (aka George's biceps) to a new mechanical windlass.

This has resulted in a total of 550lbs at the furthest forward part of the bow and now the waterline has sunk below the water.

Join us on this dark and stormy day to learn how we stay outside of marinas safely at anchor and what goes into that process.

This part of the boat is like a bottomless pit where things disappear. "Pantry Pit" is our nickname for this storage area.

What has George been putting down here in the "pantry pit"? Let's find out! I need to know what storage we have left before I go out for an overloaded cart full of more pantry essentials for life in the islands.

Join us for some silliness and chat about some of the challenges when storing things like flour onboard.

What started out as regular weekly grocery run quickly turned into an impromptu provisioning shopping trip. We broke out the list on my phone and went to town getting almost all of the shelf stable food we'll need on the sail south to warmer waters and for the first couple of months in the islands. The last thing we want to do when we arrive in paradise is have to immediately grocery shop. We're in chaos mode while we get things in order to begin the journey south this month...we're only about 10 days out now.

Thank goodness the dinner crisis was averted...the smell of the food was too tasty for it to stay inedible and only 65% cooked.

With rainy and windy weather from hurricane Ian we spent a lot of time hunkered inside the boat, but we had to go out to empty the storage unit and bring the last things onboard. In addition to carting everything back to the boat in the wet and windy air, we had some fun testing out some relic safety gear from the 90s to see if it was worth keeping and bringing onboard.

Hurricane season is almost coming to an end so the passage southward can happen soon. We won't be at the marina much longer. It's crunch time.

Join us in the video for some giggles and fun.
