⭐ The Power of Female Comicality ⭐ Ever heard of post-porn clowning? Soon it will become a household term when ABA NAIA take over the world with their incredible Berlin-based Latin-American-European performance collective!

🎧 Listen to our conversation with ABA NAIA now: https://soundcloud.com/art-workconversation/the-power-of-female-comicality

This week we had the honour of speaking with Teija and Jaika, two members of ABA NAIA. Since 2017, the collective have been exploring topics of sexuality with a comedic approach.

With tools of post-porn clowning they question gender norms and its expectations, as well as the myths and stereotypes of femininity and desire.

In this episode, Teija and Jaika tell us about how practising things that make us feel awkward help to normalise it, how powerful comedy is when venturing into awkward or difficult topics of conversation, and how important vulnerability is when wanting to be funny… the clown helps us see a reflection of ourselves in our most vulnerable place.

⭐ Celebrating The Messiness of the Artistic Process ⭐ Creating is not a perfect, linear journey; and today we talk all about embracing the imperfections in our process with Danish-born, Berlin-based movement artist, singer and musician, Kat Polar.

🎧 Listen to the episode now: https://soundcloud.com/art-workconversation/celebrating-the-messiness-of-the-artistic-process

As an artist and creator Kat's passion is to be what she creates, to observe and live inside of it.

She also explores the discipline of resisting the "fast-pace" production that is all consuming in our capitalist world, especially when it comes to promoting and sharing your art as a polished and perfect product on social media.

In this episode we talk about entering the flow state while creating, the balance between being an artist and having to exist in a capitalist world, how to be authentic on social media, and how as artists we have the power to create our own realities... including our definition of success.

⭐ Writing & Performing Important Stories ⭐

🎧 Listen to the episode now: https://soundcloud.com/art-workconversation/telling-important-stories

This week we spoke with Theo Toksvig-Stewart about telling important stories. Theo is a writer and actor and the first play he wrote and performed in, Endless Second, deals with consent within a relationship.

Endless Second received multiple five-star reviews as well as being shortlisted for two awards at the 2019 Edinburgh Fringe. It was then commissioned as an audio adaptation which was transmitted on BBC Radio 4 in March 2021.

Alongside developing television ideas, Theo has been commissioned for a number of theatre projects and was part of the BBC Writersroom Drama Room scheme and the Minack Playwrights Programme.

We talked about so much in this episode: Theo reminds us that what we do does not inform our whole identity, how he’s managed to lay down boundaries between work and life, the importance of asking if you’re the right person to tell a story as a writer, and his experience of taking a show to Edinburgh Fringe.

🎧 Listen to the episode now: https://soundcloud.com/art-workconversation/building-authentic-connections-in-your-industry

Our artist today, Maanuni, is an Indian singer-songwriter, voice artist, and vocal coach. In this episode, Maanuni shares with us the importance of authentic networking and building friendships instead of ‘contacts’ in the music industry, the lessons she’s learned about taking care of her mental health, and she helps us reframe our outlook on “competition” from jealousy to celebration, appreciation and gratitude.

We also heard about how the pandemic has affected Maanuni and her family, and the reality of what it’s like living in India during this unfathomable time, especially from an independent artist’s perspective.

Maanuni is truly an incredibly wise woman and artist. We LOVED this conversation and we know you will too.

⭐Celebrating Feminine Empowerment Through Burlesque ⭐

Could you leave a stable job to follow your heart and pursue your artistic passions? Do you embrace your body and your beautiful feminine energy - regardless of your gender?

This week we talk about all this and more, with the incredible multifaceted artist, Eléonore Clemente.

Eléonore is a French singer-songwriter, massage-therapist and Burlesque performer who one year ago quit her well-paid and stable job in the famous music software company, Ableton, to pursue her artistic passions.

In this episode we talk about the dilemma artists often face when juggling more than one passion or project... should I just choose ONE? Sometimes we need one to give us energy for the other; one to feed our souls, one to serve others, and so on.

We also talk about how empowering burlesque dancing has been for Eléonore by encouraging her to celebrate her beauty and her body in a safe space.

This episode really felt like a celebration of following your dreams, embracing who you are and learning to speak your truth. We absolutely loved it!

⭐ Knowing Your Why ⭐ Are you super clear on why you are creating your art?

In this episode we talk with faith-based RnB singer-songwriter Asha Elia about defining your why, and holding onto those reasons when you feel disillusioned by the industry, the importance of surrounding yourself with a like-minded supportive community, Asha’s experience of being a part of two worlds... the music industry and the Christian community, and how the artist’s journey is always a step by step process.

After finding a faith in Christianity while studying accounting, Asha Elia struggled to find the uplifting type of RnB music she wanted to listen to. So... she resolved to write it herself!

In this episode we talk with lead singer, Jack, and drummer, Felix, about finding a balanced dynamic within a group creative project, addressing inclusivity within the music industry, dismantling ideas of toxicity and competition, and the importance of looking after your mental health when we are so often told to work harder.

Ever wondered how a show makes it on to the TV?
Our artists today are Australian animators Mark Nicholson and Sebastian Peart, founders of Stepmates, and creators of the Australian TV Show 'Regular Old Bogan'.

Listen to the conversation here: https://soundcloud.com/art-workconversation/creating-televising-a-comedy-animation

In this episode we talk about persisting through disappointing times, how to pitch a show to a TV network, staying true to your brand and ideas, and the magic that can happen when artists take action.

At its core, Stepmates is the combined devotion of Mark and Seb to “Make Australia Funny Again” with animated satire that dances on the line of what constitutes taboo in the current political climate. They have rapidly captured the attention of audiences with their uniquely Australian sense of humour and the ability to condense an oftentimes critically overthought topic to a key statement.

In 2019, the Seven Network, a national Australian TV network, commissioned Stepmates to produce the first series of Regular Old Bogan which hit Australian screens in August 2020.

Art-Work Podcast is born!

After two years of supporting each other’s music projects to tour across Europe and the UK, and the inability to do that in 2020 due to Covid-19, Brea Robertson and Poppy Rose decided to work on a project they could do closer to home. Art-Work the podcast was born!

Why Art-Work?

We want to provide a platform for multi-disciplinary artists to share their work, their passion and their journey with a broader audience. We hope that people from all backgrounds will hear these stories and gain a deeper understanding into the minds, the life and the process of creative people from all over the world. We also want to shine a spotlight on independent artists who are not well known, to celebrate their stories and challenge the idea that to be successful in the arts, you need notoriety.

So far, we have been amazed at the conversation we’ve had with artists from Canada, England, Norway and India. Stories of challenging social systems in India to pursue their passion, using the arts to fight political battles in Norway and more.
