Health is one of those shouldn't-be-confusing-but-is topics. 🙇♀️
And yet, it's also a BIG KEY to happiness! So, let's clear things up a little bit, at least according to Penny & Steph.
Health is more than just food and exercise. It also includes sleep, social time, work, school stuff, emotions... ALL those things come into play when we're discussing the kind of health that we want for our teens.
Penny & I had a really enlightening discussion when we were preparing this part of the episode, and we came to an astounding discovery!! 🥁 We are different people, so we need to focus on different aspects for our own health! Cue light bulb! 💡
Teen Steph would have interpreted any study linking more fruits, veggies, and exercise to greater happiness (like the one we reference in our episode) to mean: I need to eat 17 fruits and vegetables every day, and I need to exercise 60 minutes beyond the training I'm already doing for my marathon. This would lead to crazy obsession and probably insanity. 🤕 So, telling Teen Steph about a study like that (without some caveats) would have been harmful to her health. Teen Steph needed to chill out.
Teen Penny, on other hand, would have benefited from a study like that because, according to Adult Penny, she didn't do much movement beyond school and work, and, she ate only ice cream with Fruit Loops on top. 🍧 Teen Penny would have felt better with a little more focus on fruits, veggies, and exercise.
You have to know your teen BEFORE you talk with her about health. Does she exercise like a maniac to the point of missing out on social stuff and sleep? Probably not healthy. Does she sit on the couch all day? Also probably not healthy. Does she only eat a strict diet of zero sugar and zero chemicals and never go to parties because of what they might serve? Probably not healthy. Does she only eat cookies and donuts? Also probably not healthy.
And that's the bottom line. Is your teen more of a Steph or more of a Penny? Both are FANTASTIC ways to be, but both interpret the world differently - especially the world of health. KNOW YOUR TEEN. And help her find balance so she can be happy, healthy, and not go insane.
