Shanghai's Covid shutdown is disrupting domestic and global supply chains.
Experts warn if Shanghai cannot resume production by May, industries with supply chains in the area will be unable to function, with the automotive industry bearing the brunt of the damage.
According to a study led by Song Zheng, an economics professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, a one-month shutdown could reduce Shanghai's income by 61 percent while reducing national income by 8.6 percent implying a 0.7 percent decline in China's GDP.
Currently, many places require truckers to produce a negative test within 48 hours of arrival, along with additional certs & health credentials. The complicated cert process & frequent highway closures have made drivers' lives more difficult
Moreover, many drivers were kept at home due to municipal lockdowns. According to a source in Wuxi, the number of truck drivers has dropped by at least 60%. Limited capacity, lengthier transit delays, and rising fuel costs increased freight costs by about 30% in early April
A closed-loop system, where personnel reside on-site and are tested routinely, helped Shanghai port survive the recent outbreak. However, a lack of labor and trucks has left vessels stranded. Ships are being rerouted to Ningbo & Zhoushan to avoid the trucker/warehouse shortage
During this shutdown, air freight fell drastically. Between April 6 and 12, more than 98 percent of flights into and out of Shanghai's Hongqiao and Pudong airports were canceled. Pudong International Airport handles half of China's air cargo traffic - BNO/Medriva
