The first heart transplant in the world was carried out in Africa (South Africa), by the African surgeon, Christiaan Barnard.

The procedure was carried out on December 3, 1967, at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town. The recipient of the heart was 53 years old Louis Washkansky, while the heart donor was 25-year-old Denise Darvall, who had suffered a fatal brain injury.

Louis Washkansky survived for 18 days before he died on December 21, 1967. Nonetheless, the procedure would change medicine for ever.
