Dating back to 900 CE, the Benin Kingdom emerged when the Edo people settled in the lush tropical rainforests of West Africa. 🌿🌴 This kingdom’s walls, encompassing Benin City and its surrounding areas, were the largest earthworks ever constructed before the mechanical era. No wonder they made it into the Genius Book of World Records! 📚🌍
What’s even more impressive is that Benin City was ahead of its time with street lighting! 💡 Huge metal lamps, towering high above the streets, illuminated the city, especially near the majestic king’s palace. These lamps, fueled by palm oil, lit up the night, guiding traffic to and from the palace. Talk about innovation! 🌃✨
When the Portuguese explorers arrived in 1485, they were left speechless by the greatness they encountered. They marveled at the vastness of this kingdom, composed of interlocked cities and villages. No wonder they called it the “Great city of Benin”! 🤩🏙️

Did you know about the remarkable life of Sarah Forbes Bonetta?
She was captured and orphaned during a slave hunt in West Africa in 1848. The King of Dahomey, now Benin Republic, took her as a prisoner. Luckily, Captain Frederick E. Forbes of the Royal Navy rescued her during a visit and presented her as a gift to Queen Victoria in 1850 when she was only eight years old.
Queen Victoria took a liking to Sarah and ensured she received an education and a loving home. Sarah thrived and became a prominent figure in society.
She even married a wealthy merchant, and their eldest daughter became the Queen’s godchild. They settled in colonial Lagos and named their first child Victoria, with the Queen’s blessing.
Unfortunately, Sarah passed away at the young age of 37 due to tuberculosis. The Queen expressed her sorrow for Victoria, her Black godchild, upon hearing the news of her dear mother’s death. Sarah’s story is truly inspiring.

After returning from war, men had to live with a shaman for three months to undergo spiritual cleansing before being accepted back into society.
They believed that the human spirit needed restoration and harmony with nature and the community.
Using a horn, they would draw out stagnant and dysfunctional blood to the surface. This powerful ritual, known as the “African suction cup,” cleansed warriors of mental illness and trauma they might experience later in life.
Sadly, this practice, originating in Africa, was lost due to slavery and colonization.

While not much is known about their origins, it is believed that the Ndebeles descended from the larger Nguni tribes, which make up a significant portion of South Africa’s black population. However, due to family rivalries, a faction of the Ndebele community ventured even further north, finding a new home in Zimbabwe. Meanwhile, those who remained in South Africa, particularly the Manala and the Nozundza groups, became the pioneers of abstract house-painting schemes. It’s fascinating to learn that the Igbo people, who are the third largest ethnic group in Bioko, have their roots in Arochukwu, present-day Abia state.
What’s even more remarkable is that they still speak the Igbo language to this day. In fact, they refer to the country as “Panya”. The Igbo community in Bioko has a rich history, with many of them migrating during the Spanish exploitation plantation in the 19th century and choosing to settle there permanently.

Born in Senegal and named after the ship that brought her to Boston, Phillis Wheatley’s early life was marked by the horrors of slavery. But amidst the darkness, a spark of brilliance emerged. At just thirteen years old, she was already penning heartfelt poems in a language foreign to her own. Yet, skeptics doubted her talent, unable to fathom that a young Black woman could possess such literary prowess.
But Phillis refused to be silenced. At the tender age of twenty, she stood before a court of learned men, adorned in their robes and wigs. 🎩 She was put to the test, reciting verses from the likes of Virgil, Milton, and even passages from the Bible. And with unwavering determination, she swore that her poems were entirely her own, free from any plagiarism.
Against all odds, Phillis Wheatley emerged victorious, proving that she was not just a woman, not just Black, not just enslaved, but a poet of immense talent. 🌟 And in doing so, she etched her name in history as the first African-American writer to publish a book in the United States.

Did you know about the incredible mathematical abilities of Thomas Fuller, an African man who was sold into slavery in 1724? He was nicknamed the “Virginia Calculator” because of his remarkable talent for solving complex math problems in his head.
Once, someone asked Fuller how many seconds there are in a year and a half. Within just two minutes, he confidently answered 47,304,000. Another time, he was asked how many seconds a person has lived if they are 70 years, 17 days, and 12 hours old. In just a minute and a half, Fuller replied with 2,210,500,800.
However, one person who was working out the calculations on paper told Fuller that he was wrong because the answer seemed much smaller. Without missing a beat, Fuller responded, “Top, massa, you forget de leap year.” And when the leap year was taken into account, the calculations matched perfectly.
Thomas Fuller’s incredible mathematical abilities and attention to detail continue to inspire us today.

The term “Ogbanje” was also been used to describe stubborn children. It was believed that their stubbornness was a result of the influence of the Ogbanje spirit. This myth has sparked various interpretations and discussions over the years.
Some sources have even connected the Ogbanje myth to certain diseases, such as Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and sickle cell anemia, which were not understood or recognized in the past.

One captivating name is ‘Alkebulan’, considered to be the oldest name for the continent. Derived from Arabic, it translates to the ‘Land of Blacks’. But that’s not all! In Dr. Cheikh Anah Diop’s ‘History of Afrika’, he reveals that ‘Alkebu-lan’ can also be interpreted as ‘Mother of mankind’ or even ‘Garden of Eden’. How intriguing is that?
This name holds a special place in African history, as it is believed to be the indigenous name used by the first set of Indigenous blacks to represent their identity and origin. It predates the Roman and ancient Greek influence that eventually led to the adoption of the name ‘Africa’.
