Just got this new study Bible which I would highly recommend, it includes scholars commentary verse and verse and in reflection sections. I bought my secondhand on eBay for only £10! This makes morning study so much simpler and quicker without compromising on learning context 😊

Slight dates update! Lives start as planned on the 10th but the podcast now begins in May 😊 unfortunately I have had to pick up some more hours at work so haven’t quite as much time to research as I planned, looking forward to diving into 1 and 2 Timothy in May and in the meantime hanging out live on Friday nights 😊

Made a little friend at the beach today who sat with us for about half an hour. It reminded of Matthew 6:“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?

“And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

God always knows what we need to hear. That was exactly what I needed to remember today. Sometimes I’m surprised at the ways he reminds us through things like cute robins!

I am not a morning person 😅 sitting down and closing my eyes in the morning would just end up in me going back to sleep! So as soon as I get out of bed I do the washing up. I’ve found this to be a perfect moment to pray. It keeps my hands busy to keep me awake, but it’s meaningless enough that I can still focus on Jesus. I put on some worship music and talk to Him. It’s turned a boring chore into a precious moment 💛 morning devotionals don’t have to look a certain way. Find something that works!

One big thing I have learnt this year is importance of carving out time to rest. The other day we went for a walk by the sea and got a hot chocolate at the beach cafe and that moment of stillness was exactly what my soul needed! You don’t need to reach the end of your to-do list, or finish your current project or reach your goal to earn rest. It’s not earnt. It’s a discipline of the Christian life. There’s so much in the Bible about the importance of rest! And since I’ve been trying to practice it regularly - I get it! When hard stuff or exciting stuff comes along, I feel a lot more ready to tackle it! What’s God saying to you about rest? Is it something you need to factor in more for 2023? 💛

I was praying for the UK today on our run - the latest census shows a drop in people identifying as Christian. It is now a minority religion. This may seem odd, but I actually feel excitement over this. There’s two reasons:

1. Could this mark an ending of cultural Christianity? Many people would have previously ticked the Christian box because they were baptized as a baby or because they like to go to a carol service at Christmas or because their Nan went to church etc. My hope is that the shift to choosing the ‘non-religious’ box shows a shift in understanding the Christianity isn’t something you inherent or absorb from culture but a decision you make about how you want to live your life. Jesus defines Christianity as discipleship. He tells us that if anyone wants to be his disciple they must deny themselves, take up their cross and follow him. The possibility that THAT is what people really mean when they call themselves Christian is exciting to me. Could the majority of the UK church moving from a place of comfy tradition into an active family of laid down lovers of Jesus?
2. In church history, and in the modern day (I’m thinking of China here), we see renewal and revival when Christians are in minority. I’ll point you to Mark Sayers’ book ‘Reappearing Church’ for an amazing study into this phenomenon. In a nutshell, when Christianity isn’t the accepted norm, our lives of holiness shine brighter and our commitment is clearer. God seems to love to work powerfully through faithful remnants.

This is a time for us to be praying for a strengthening of the UK church, a deepening of faith and an ability to witness to what following Jesus is really all about. 🙏
