🌟 Let's Rewrite the Narrative! 🌟

Special Olympics is launching a powerful campaign called "Yeah, I am Special" to reclaim the word "special" and challenge the stigma surrounding it. With support from sports icons like Damian Lillard and Dale Moss, they're flipping the script on language often used to demean people with disabilities.

"In sports, 'special' signifies greatness and inspiration," says Christy Weir, VP of Special Olympics. "Our athletes deserve that same respect."

This initiative, developed with Tombras agency, aims to spark a global dialogue on societal labels. It's a bold step forward coinciding with the 15th anniversary of their "Spread the Word to End the Word" movement, advocating against the use of the word "re**rd."

Stay tuned for this campaign's digital launch next year! Let's lead the way in reshaping perceptions and proving that words truly matter. 🗣️

"It is about empowerment, and this is especially important for disabled people who face multiple and intersecting types of marginalization"

Experts say accurate portrayals of disability are rare as the media often fails to see people with disabilities as part of the audience.

"The X-rays also show medical intervention — the two metal rods inserted into her body. Embroidered onto the image are brightly colored beads that also look like plants, vines, or renderings of the polio virus. Mehta's own interventions are her way of (literally) threading a broader personal story into the X-ray's singular snapshot of disability."

"Script/Rescript" is a new exhibition at SDSU Art Gallery featuring ten visual artists with disabilities from across the country and Mexico. The works celebrate rescripting the medicalized narrative of disability.

"My advice would be to connect with others who celebrate your differences instead of hiding them. Embrace change. Embrace the fact that there are people out there who love you for you, and no matter what you look like or what you're able to do, trust that you have it within you to be strong and to make a difference."

"On one side, so-called invisible illnesses, which were rarely talked about (and likely never heard of by many), are now making their way right to our screens. On the other hand, people who have these chronic illnesses are seeing that they're not alone and now have an accessible tool that helps them feel more supported."

“But they don’t listen to people with disabilities and then they release something that isn’t right for people with disabilities. So people with disabilities get upset and then marketers are like: ‘Whoa, why aren’t you happy just to have something for you?’ It’s because you didn’t listen to us, you know?”

"Over 1.3 billion people across the world live with some form of disability. Yet, according to Return on Disability, only 4% of businesses are focused on expanding their offerings to include disabled people. Clearly, business has a long way to go in rectifying society’s persistent discrimination of the disabled community."

Only 4% of businesses are focused on expanding their offerings to include disabled people. That has to change, this activist says as Disability Pride month gets underway.

“Being excluded from and segregated from everybody else is such a frustratingly characteristic aspect of being disabled. Not because of anything to do with your actual condition, but simply because of the barriers that people put in place to stop you from being able to have an equitable experience of public life.”

Disabled attendees were forced to use wheelchairs thanks to “dangerous” terrain.
