Liverpool 1-1 Arsenal: Gunners 'measured and mature' in Anfield draw
Premier League

Jurgen Klopp ordered Liverpool's fans to bring the noise and give Arsenal a "proper Anfield experience" at the place where their nerve has so often failed them in past.

Arsenal have not won at Anfield since September 2012 and visits into this hothouse atmosphere are always used as a gauge for the Gunners' title-winning temperament and credentials - or lack of them.

It was in April, with Arsenal were cruising at 2-0, that Granit Xhaka unwisely infuriated Liverpool fans in a spat with Trent Alexander-Arnold, firing up Anfield to the extent that Mikel Arteta's side ended up so ragged that they were fortunate to escape with a draw.

This was the moment the rot set in last season, the start of the late collapse that eventually saw the long-time leaders overhauled by eventual champions Manchester City.

Luton lived up to their pledge of making it "a special day" for convalescing captain Tom Lockyer by beating Newcastle United at an emotionally charged Kenilworth Road.
Premier League
Andros Townsend headed home the Hatters' winner against his former club in Luton's first Premier League game since Lockyer's collapse at Bournemouth seven days earlier.

Townsend held up Lockyer's number four shirt in celebration after the goal - one of a number of tributes paid by Luton players and fans to their stricken skipper before, during and after the game.

"All the chat throughout the week was 'do it for our captain'," former England winger Townsend, 32.

Arsenal maintained their place at the top of the Premier League after a thrilling draw with Liverpool at Anfield.
Premier League

Victory for either side would have put them top of the table at Christmas but they had to settle for a share of the points in an entertaining encounter.

Arsenal delivered the perfect start when defender Gabriel headed home from Martin Odegaard's free-kick after only four minutes.

However, Liverpool regrouped and were level after 29 minutes when Mohamed Salah thrashed a finish high past Gunners keeper David Raya at his near post after collecting Trent Alexander-Arnold's raking pass.

Arsenal are considering a £52m-move for Sporting Lisbon and Portugal defender Goncalo Inacio, 22, in January. (Sun)

Chelsea will block any advances from Tottenham for their 23-year-old England midfielder Conor Gallagher in the January transfer window despite uncertainty over his contract situation. (Football Insider)

Tosin Adarabioyo, 26, has told Fulham he wants to leave the club next summer on a free transfer. The former England youth international defender has previously interested Tottenham and Monaco. (Sun)

Tottenham will turn to other targets if they do not get any encouragement from France and Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo in the next few weeks. The 23-year-old has also been linked with a move to Manchester United. (Teamtalk)

Rennes are open to parting ways with midfielder Nemanja Matic, 35, in January. The former Serbia international only joined the Ligue 1 side from Roma last summer. (L'Equipe)

Barcelona and Real Madrid are leading the chase to sign Mason Greenwood, 22, with Manchester United currently having no plans to bring him back to Old Trafford permanently once his loan spell at Getafe ends. (Talksport)

Having been sacked by Nottingham Forest, Steve Cooper is top of Crystal Palace's managerial shortlist and the Welshman, 44 could now be approached by the London club, with current boss Roy Hodgson, 76, considering retirement again. (Football Insider)

Chelsea captain Reece James has had surgery in an attempt to fix a recurring hamstring injury.
Chelsea Football Club UEFA Champions League

James was substituted after 26 minutes due to injury in the 3-0 defeat by Everton at Goodison Park.

It was the first time he had started a game for Chelsea since 25 November after a previous hamstring injury had ruled him out for eight matches.

The 24-year-old said he had experienced "significantly more hate and negativity" since his latest injury.

Lucas Vazquez struck deep into stoppage time as 10-man Real Madrid won at Alaves to go top of La Liga.
Real Madrid C.F. La Fábrica del Real Madrid

A 1-1 draw between Girona and Betis earlier in the day meant Real knew they would go first with victory.

But they struggled to create chances and their cause was not helped when defender Nacho was dismissed in the 54th minute for a bad foul on Samu Omorodion.

But two minutes into added time Vazquez rose to head in a Toni Kroos corner.

La Liga top scorer Jude Bellingham was unable to add to his 13 league goals so far in this campaign but it did not matter as Carlo Ancelotti's side end 2023 in first place, going above Girona on goal difference.

Girona had looked on course to take another important win thanks to Artem Dovbyk's first-half penalty, but German Pezzella equalised with two minutes left.

European Super League: What happens now after new proposal announced?

The European Super League is making headlines again.

It was initially launched 32 months ago but then dumped almost immediately by nine of its 12 founder members.

That followed widespread opposition which in England went as far as then-Prime Minister Boris Johnson and the Royal Family through Football Association president Prince William.

But the concept has been given fresh impetus. BBC Sport's Simon Stone assesses a seismic day for European football and looks at what may come next.

Is the GOAT debate over for good? Cristiano Ronaldo is nowhere to be seen as eternal rival Lionel Messi picks up his seventh GOAL50 award.

On Tuesday, Messi was announced as the winner of the 2023 GOAL50 vote. It was a record-extending seventh success for the Argentine - and it came as no surprise given his heroic and historic exploits at last season's World Cup in Qatar.
Cristiano Ronaldo

What was shocking, though, was the fact that Ronaldo wasn't even in the running. After finishing 11th last year, the five-time winner didn't even make the longlist in 2023, hammering home just how far his stock has fallen over the past 12 months.
