The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) sent a written demand to the Marcos family in December 2021 to pay their estate taxes liability worth P203 billion.

BIR Commissioner Caesar Dulay made the confirmation in a response to a letter sent to them by Ernest Ramel, who is the chairman of presidential candidate and Manila mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso’s party Aksyon Demokratiko.

“The BIR did send a written demand to the Marcos heirs on December 02, 2021 regarding their tax liabilities,” Dulay said in a letter dated March 14, but was only furnished to the media by Ramel on Wednesday.

INQUIRER.net has reached out to Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos’ spokesperson Vic Rodriguez for comment but has yet to receive a reply as of posting time.
It can be recalled that Ramel asked the BIR to demand the Marcos family to pay their tax liabilities estimated to be worth P203.819 billion.

In response to this, however, Rodriguez said that the estimated P200 billion estate tax of the Marcos family remains unsettled since the properties linked to the case are still under litigation, noting that even BIR and the Presidential Commission on Good Government (PCGG) “have arrived at an agreement for the BIR to wait for the decision on the said case before any collection.”

Rodriguez’s statement was also questioned by Ramel, who wrote PCGG chairman John Agbayani to verify the claim of Rodriguez that the PCGG and BIR reached an agreement.

An award-winning Ilocano filmmaker is creating a buzz in the national and global film industry once again.

The Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) has named Mr. Mark Lucas Moneda, a resident of Barangay 10 in Laoag City, as one of its 77 film ambassadors this year, bringing the total number of awardees to nearly 400 in six years.

The 6th Film Ambassador's Night held on February 27 at the Manila Metropolitan Theater aims to honor the films and filmmakers that gave pride to the Philippines in the previous year, especially those that competed and screened internationally.

"Miss You, George!," a story set during the height of the pandemic in which the protagonist strives to catch up with his "long-distance" friend who works as a medical frontliner, earned Moneda recognition in the short film category.

The short film, which put Moneda in the limelight, won the championship award at QCinema International Film Festival in May 2021; received the "Best Short Film," "Jury Awards," and "Audience Choice Award," and was nominated for "Best Actor," "Best Director," and "Best Performance of the Festival" at the International Film Festival Manhattan Spring 2021; and was an official selection for the World Health Organization's 2021 Health For All Film Fest in Switzerland.

"Dreams do come true... I truly consider this as by far the main highlight of my entire filmmaking career. Maraming salamat po sa pagkilala at sa pagpapahalaga. It was a humbling experience sharing the stage with the most celebrated filmmakers, actors, and celebrities in the industry that I look up to," Moneda wrote on his Facebook.

Moreover, Moneda was proud to wear his inabel attire at the 6th Film Ambassador's Night, saying, "It was also an honor to 'wear' my Ilocano identity on this event as I dedicate this achievement to my province, Ilocos Norte, and my fellow Ilocano filmmakers."

Currently, the sequel to "Miss You, George!" titled "See You, George!" is also bagging awards, including Best Short Film, Best Director and Best Screenplay at the Sorok Short Film Festival 2021; Best Director, Best Editing and Cong. Shirlyn Bañas Award at the Sundayag Film Festival 2021; and an official selection at the Cinema Rehiyon 2022.

Moneda also actively participates in PGIN-sponsored film competitions, where his entries have received multiple awards, notably the "Ang Mga Nawalang Pag-asa at Panlasa," "Brad," "Areglo," and "Sinapupunan."

Kuwento ni Percibal, 56 anyos, na may 12 anak, naglalaro lang sa P300-350 ang kinikita niya sa 2 oras na nasa dagat siya para mangisda.

Karaniwang nakukuha nila ay mga sapsap, espada at iba pa.

Dahil nasa halos P250 na nakukunsumo nilang gasolina balikan, halos P50 na lang ang nauuwi niya sa kaniyang pamilya.

Hindi rin kasi nila kayang taasan ang presyo lalo na't halos 90 silang mangingisda na nagbebenta ng mga huli nila sa mga tindera sa palengke.

Ayon sa mga mangingisda sa lugar, P5,000 ang gastos sa krudo para sa 12 oras na pangingisda.

Kaya naman para makabawi sa kita, binebenta nila P10,000 kada banyera ng hasa hasa na kanilag nahuhuli.

Minsan ay nasa P20,000 ang kita nila, na paghahatian ng halos 15-20 na mangingisda na magkakasama sa bangka.

Kaya naman sabi nila, posibleng dagdagan pa nila ang presyuhan nila sa mga darating na araw, lalo na sumirit na sa P64-70 kada litro ng produktong petrolyo.

Domestic pump prices of petroleum products are seen to shoot up big-time in the coming week -- the 10th straight weekly hikes -- as global crude oil prices continue to soar amid the Russia-Ukraine war.

Citing oil trading monitoring in the past five days, based on the Mean of Platts Singapore, an oil industry source told GMA News Online that the price per liter of diesel may increase by P5.30 to P5.50.

Gasoline prices, meanwhile, may go up by P3.50 to P3.70 per liter.

The local oil industry uses Mean of Platts Singapore (MOPS), the daily average of all trading transactions between buyers and sellers of petroleum products as assessed and summarized by Standard and Poor’s Platts.

On the other hand, Unioil Petroleum Philippines’ price forecast for March 8 to 14 trading week showed that diesel may climb by P4 per liter and gasoline may rise by P3 per liter.

Bataan Nuclear Power Plant's design is secure, and its revival and possible utilization is safe despite BNPP's decades of being mothballed, the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (DOST-PNRI) said Friday.

In an interview on Dobol B TV, DOST-PNRI Director Carlo Arcilla said that BNPP's design is similar to the nuclear plants being used in South Korea, Slovenia, and Brazil.

Arcilla said the three nuclear plants are still up and running. “Ibig sabihin, ‘yung design na ‘yan ay safe” (This means the plant’s design is safe.)

The DOST-PNRI director added that while the BNPP is not being used, maintenance works are still being implemented.

He also reiterated the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology’s (Phivolcs) stance that the BNPP’s site is safe as it was built on solid foundation and that nearby volcano Mount Natib is no longer active.

Arcilla welcomed the issuance of Executive Order 164, a by-product of the EO 116 issued in 2020 that directs the conduct of relevant studies for the adoption of a National Position for a Nuclear Energy Program, and constituted the Nuclear Energy Program Inter-Agency Committee (NEP-IAC) to oversee its preparation.

The latest EO mandates the NEP-IAC to collate all audits and recommendations, conduct further studies and assessments and if necessary, and make recommendations on the use and viability of the BNPP and the establishment of other facilities for the utilization of nuclear energy.

Earlier, the government pegged the cost of reviving the BNPP at around $1 billion.

In 1976, then-President Ferdinand Marcos ordered the construction of the BNPP, costing as much as $2.3 billion.

MAGNITUDE 4.0 EARTH QUAKE TUMAMA SA ILOCOS NORTE

Isang lindol na may magnitude na 4.0 ang tumama sa Ilocos Norte bandang 8:16 p.m. noong Sabado, Pebrero 19, sabi ng Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

Natunton ang epicenter ng lindol sa layong 20 kilometro (km) hilagang-silangan ng Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte. Ito ay tectonic ang pinagmulan at ayon sa Phivolcs, ang mga tectonic na lindol ay sanhi ng biglaang paggalaw sa mga fault at hangganan ng plate.

Walang inaasahang aftershocks at pinsala pagkatapos ng lindol, ani Phivolcs.
