I was asked the other week why I keep broken LEGO pieces. Part of being a LEGO storyteller and builder, as well as being an online content-creator for any community, I do a lot with photography. And as any photographer will tell you, props and costumes are very important to your photo’s final outcome.

Here is a great example of what I mean, here I utilized a broken visor and worn metallic sword I had in my collection to give an antiquated and decrepit feeling to this fallen warrior.

There has been a lot of talk and excitement circulating regarding Series 26 of the Collectible Minifigure Series. AFOL’s who grew up in the 90’s particularly are excited to see the return of classic LEGO Space themes such as Blacktron, M:Tron and Ice Planet 2002.

A fun reference that seems to mostly have gone unnoticed, is the undisclosed identity of the female Ice Planet astronaut included in the series. LEGO Space fans love the Space Penguin, as well as the resurrection of the translucent orange sawblade and ringed planetary logo. The minifigure includes short red hair to use when removing her helmet, and with that one detail LEGO has referenced one of the most important LEGO Space figures from the early 90’s.

The 90’s saw a change in LEGO’s minifigures, with more detail being included in the faces and body printing, and female characters becoming more and more present and unique as the decade progressed. With the addition of the “Ice Planet 2002” theme in 1993, LEGO provided another milestone for their brand, as well as female representation, with the “Doctor Kelvin” minifigure.

Doctor Kelvin was important for two main reasons. Not only was she the first female figure seen in the LEGO Space theme, she was also the first female with a uniquely printed face. Also, much like with the Willa the Witch minifigure that came later in 1997 as part of the “Fright Knights” theme, Doctor Kelvin was one of the few named minifigures in the Space Theme, and would be the only female named figure until Gypsy Moth in 1998.

While, unfortunately, the LEGO Corporation did not actually assign a name to the minifigure, much like with the remake of “Basil the Batlord” in Series 25, it is obvious who this minifigure is supposed to be.

Project Gemini Update: “The Alpha Parlor Junkyard Cleanup Project”
Deciding the MechCon she was using yesterday wasn’t heavy-duty enough, Lt Commander Maxine “Max” Tekken called in a favor with RoboForce and brought in two Sora 0.3 DuraMechs. The project seems to have picked up pace, and they have turned up a number of interesting artifacts during the cleanup.

Just started reading this book by Jens Anderson about the founding and history of LEGO. I highly recommend it! The obstacles overcome by the family prior to LEGO’s founding is amazing and honestly very encouraging. And the accounts by the family are personable and telling of a devout and close family that brought our beloved LEGO to life.
