THE CHURCH TRANSFORMS ORPHANAGE IN COTE D'IVOIRE

- Elder Alfred Kyungu of The Church of Jesus Christ presents new and renovated buildings for orphaned children -

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints donated new and renovated buildings to the Yopougon Attie Nursery in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire. A donation ceremony, attended by Church and community leaders, was held at the nursery.

The Yopougon Attie Nursery is an orphanage that serves 90-100 children from infancy to 18 years old. Many of the children have been abandoned, and most of the children have physical or intellectual disabilities. The donation was made at the request of the Cote d’Ivoire Ministry of Women, Families, and Children.

Presenting the donation for the Church was Elder Alfred Kyungu, a General Authority Seventy and counselor in the Africa West area presidency of the Church. He was joined by Sister Lucie Kyungu and Elder Tonga Sai, an Area Seventy serving members and leaders in the Abidjan area.

THE CHURCH SUPPORTS SCHOOLS IN SOUTH AFRICA

The Church of Jesus Christ has been helping the Tsakani Primary School in 2018. The project then was to build a drainage system by the classrooms and refurbish 10 mobile classrooms and six teacher offices. Two years later, another drainage system was installed, and two mobile classroom blocks were also refurbished.

Church leaders Elder Mark Palmer and Elders Dube and Silva of the Africa South Area Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ visited a school.

“The goal of all education is to help grow future leaders within the community, and you look at the smiles on these young people’s faces and they’re enjoying learning and they’re thrilled to be here,” said Elder Palmer.

This donation will go towards two future projects at the primary school. Part of this project is upgrading the school’s storm water drainage system to prevent flooding.

Ms. Comrade Tshikosi, a member of the school’s governing body and mother to four children who have attended the school, is happy the school will have a safer place for the children to play.

THE HOUSTON FOOD BANK - LARGEST FOOD BANK IN THE USA - A NEW 53 ACRE FACILITY IS BEING BUILT

The Houston Food Bank is already recognized as the largest food bank distribution organization in the USA covering 18 counties in southeast Texas. With an additional new facility currently being built in NW Houston, its capacity will increase significantly.

The Church has been a supporter of the food bank for many years. Not only does it provide food produced by the Church, but it also receives peanut butter made at the only Church cannery of its kind here in Houston. In addition to providing products to the food bank, Church members from the 100+ congregations in the metro Houston area donate their time to work at the food bank.

This relationship has developed over many years and continues to grow. The work provided by Church members has a significant impact on those in need. As an example, a group of youth volunteers from the Richmond Stake, was recently able to pack 23 pallets of food weighing 32,706 pounds and totaling 25,875 meals in just a few hours for those in need.

A NEW FRENCH-SPEAKING BRANCH IN HOUSTON, TX – NUMBER 4 IN THE USA

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Houston area recently created a French-speaking branch to accommodate many French-speaking Church members who have come to Houston from different countries, plus those who join the church. Officially called Houston 7th Branch, it is part of the Houston Texas Stake.

The Houston 7th Branch meets at Bering Drive in the Galleria area. It is an addition to other language branches in the area including Chinese, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Sign Language and many Spanish units.

A pair of French-speaking missionaries are assigned to the branch. They even help with audio/visual and teach lessons to people in other cities. Large numbers of French-speaking Africans have been arriving in the Houston area and the Branch is vibrant and growing quickly.

NEW ANCHORAGE ALASKA TEMPLE BEING BUILT - EXISTING TEMPLE TO BE REMOVED

The current Anchorage Alaska Temple was dedicated in 1999. A new larger temple will be built on the same grounds as the current temple. Though not common, this will be the second active temple after the Provo Utah Temple to be removed and replaced with a new larger facility.

The current property is occupied by the temple and the aging stake center which was demolished to make room for the new larger temple construction.

When the stake center was closed, large amounts of valuable fixtures and equipment were donated to other faith groups in the area. The new temple is now being built where the stake center was before.

The new temple is planned to be online in the summer of 2026 and the current temple will continue to function until the new one is completed.

A PORTION OF THE NEW HYMNBOOK IS NOW AVAILABLE

After reviewing thousands of submissions and gathering hymns from across the world, the Church just published the first 13 hymns of the new “Hymns – for Home and Church”. The hymns will be available in the Sacred Music and Gospel Library apps, and in the online Music Library. The collection will contain many new hymns as well as familiar ones and will be more accommodating to Church members speaking various languages.

The hymns will be presented in PDF sheet music including audio recordings, lyrics only and interactive sheet music which allows adjusting the key and tempo, plus the ability to print the music. More groups of new hymns will be released every few months until the full hymnbook is complete in 2026. The same advance release plan will begin for many other languages over the next two to three years.
The hymnbook committee worked with senior leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ to establish five guiding principles for the selection process. The hymns should:

1. Increase faith in and worship of our Heavenly Father and His Son, Jesus Christ.
2. Invite joyful singing at home and at church
3. Comfort the weary and inspire members to endure in faith
4. Unify members throughout the church

“We are just so excited about the opportunity that a new hymnbook will give us as a Church to become unified, to meet those sacred music goals, and to come closer to our Heavenly Father and worship not only at church but at home every day,” said Steve Schank, chair of the new hymnbook committee. “These are the ultimate goals that we hope every Latter-day Saint achieves by using the sacred music of the Church in this new collection.”

BAYLOR MEDICAL SCHOOL’S ANNUAL REFUGEE HEALTH FAIR AT BERING CHAPEL

Over the weekend, students from Baylor University held their annual Refugee Health Fair. The event took place at the Bering Chapel in the Houston Texas Stake. The purpose of the health fair was to provide basic health services for refugees in the Houston area. These services included vaccinations, vision and dental screening, nutrition and food, plus women’s health to name a few.

Stephen Sheffield, a medical student at the Baylor College of Medicine and Church member, with his fellow students Prathik and Meghana, arranged the event this year. Stephen noted that events like this are very valuable to the refugees. Many come from nations where health services are not available. Additionally, it’s even more difficult for them to access our medical system here.

Refugees are also introduced to organizations and businesses that can help them in many ways. They can meet with volunteer lawyers, the Houston Food Bank, YMCA services, Harris Health, insurance organizations, etc. All of these services provide access to valuable resources for them.

THE HOUSTON NATIONAL CEMETERY - ONE WEEK AFTER MEMORIAL DAY

The Houston National Cemetery is a federal government facility for veterans. It is a very large cemetery measuring 420 acres with over 111,000 graves. Every year in preparation for Memorial Day, flags are placed on each grave in honor of their service and sacrifice.

Not only does the Church participate in the Memorial Day events, but a week later it also helps in the enormous work of gathering the flags that were placed on each of the 111,000 graves.

The Oyster Creek Ward in the Richmond Stake is one of the groups that participates in the flag gathering project. The flags are collected one at a time and the wooden sticks on each flag are examined and cleaned. Then they are bundled in packets of 25 and 20 of those bundles are packed in a storage container.

Bishop Lyon said the ward really enjoys the project. In part because they are doing something for those who can’t do for themselves and this project has things to do for all ages from children to grandparents.

There are many organizations that volunteer to help with activities in preparation for the Memorial Day. This project isn’t as visible as other projects and it has far fewer participating groups, but the Oyster Creek Ward thoroughly enjoys this community project and plans to continue supporting this special activity.

100 VOLUNTEERS - 4,000 POUNDS OF RICE & BEANS - YOUTH FROM LOCAL CHURCHES SUPPORT FAMILIES IN NEED

Volunteers from the Cross Creek Ward in the Katy Texas Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ and the St. Faustina Catholic Church gathered to support Family Hope, a west Houston family relief organization. Over 100 volunteers gathered at the Heritage Bluff chapel to package food for families in need.

The youth unloaded the 4,000 lbs. of rice and beans and helped package them for distribution. In just a few hours 2,000 pounds of rice and 2,000 pounds of beans were prepared and ready to go.

Cherie Napoleon from the Katy Stake noted, “It was wonderful to have people from two faith groups come together to work on a project like this that will benefit those in need in our community.”

YOUTH IN KATY STAKE DOCUMENT NAMES IN LOCAL CEMETERY

Youth of the Katy Texas Stake gathered to help document the names of persons buried at the Fulshear Black Cemetery in Fulshear, Texas, and helped to beautify the cemetery. In 2010, the cemetery was named a “Historical Texas Cemetery'' and is believed to be one of the largest of the five known slave cemeteries in the Fulshear area.

Working in conjunction with the cemetery's caretaker, Torey Gilmore of The Greater Zachary Baptist Church, Katy Stake youth leaders, and Sister Stephani Green, a Community Outreach Support Missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, the youth were trained. They found many markers with only the top of the grave above ground. The young women and young men excitedly but carefully dug down to expose more of the markers. Using only water and paintbrushes, they would clean the marker to discover what was written. One could observe the excitement, determination, and joy that these teenagers felt in finding individuals and information about them. Previously, the oldest marker was 1912. The efforts discovered a grave dating back to 1887.

Going forward there is more work to be done with the Fulshear Black Cemetery. Those buried there will be identified in the FamilySearch Tree. Their families will be built including as many generations as possible. The Fulshear Black Cemetery will be added to Cemeteries, Monuments and Memorials as well as Community Trees on the FamilySearch website.

At the conclusion of the service project Katy Texas Stake President Hanis told all those present: “As members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we are taught in the Book of Mormon that ...when ye are in the service of your fellow beings ye are only in the service of your God. It doesn’t matter what religion, background, race, culture, orientation, or community, we are brothers and sisters of a loving Heavenly Father and today we accomplished His work as we served. Hopefully, today is not the last day that we serve together in the Fulshear Black Cemetery because after today, we are now connected to each other.”

ALASKA - OLD MEETINGHOUSE FURNISHINGS SUPPORT OTHER LOCAL FAITH & COMMUNITY GROUPS

- Valuable equipment and furnishings from this aging church meetinghouse donated to 25 other faith and civic organizations –

Organizations from across Alaska came to an Anchorage meetinghouse to collect the materials that will save them many thousands of dollars. Both the Brayton chapel and Anchorage Alaska Temple are scheduled to be removed and rebuilt on this property.

Almost a year ago, Sheldon and Christine Fisher, following the example set a few years earlier in California, did not want to see materials from inside the building languish in the landfill. Christine knew they could be put to good use in the community.

“[We have] a lot of friends in the community who do good things within their own congregation and by helping them, we knew it would help the faith and the building of the community,” Christine Fisher said. “We reached out to our Jewish friends, our Muslim friends, and all these other Christian faiths as well as nonprofits to see [what] they needed, and the response was overwhelming. They were just so grateful. And we are so grateful that they’re taking it. I know it just continued to bless the community that this chapel will live on through these other organizations.”

Volunteers from Alaska Children’s Institute for the Performing Arts in Kenai came to collect curtains, trim and finish wood and to remove a handicap access ramp. Their theater burned down three years ago, and they have been crowd-sourcing materials and funds to rebuild. Kenai Peninsula Borough Mayor Peter Micciche, who is involved with the theater, helped gather the materials and believes they will benefit children in his community.

“These materials are a godsend,” Mayor Micciche said. “What looks like not much here will save us tens of thousands of dollars and will be put to work enriching the lives of young people and giving them a purpose for years to come.”

LOCAL FAMILIES GET SUPPORT FROM “FAMILY HOPE”

The local helping hand organization Family Hope is dedicated to helping those in the local area with basic needs.

One of Family Hope's ongoing projects is a monthly food distribution program. Hundreds benefit from community volunteers and service groups donating their time to distribute food as they work with the Family Hope organization.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Katy area has partnered with Family Hope on a variety of projects and has supported them with physical resources, food items and Church members volunteering their time.

Sister Tanner and Sister Bradley, two Latter-day Saint missionaries serving in the Richmond Stake, arrived before sunrise on a chilly Saturday morning to help Family Hope with a large-scale food distribution project. While it was cold, hard work it greatly benefited those in need and the sister missionaries enjoyed helping. They said they'll be returning to help with the next food distribution project.

RESPONSIBILITY AND OWNERSHIP OF THE KIRTLAND TEMPLE, SACRED SITES & HISTORIC DOCUMENTS TRANSFER TO THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST

Acquisitions include Kirtland Temple, historic buildings in Nauvoo and manuscripts of Joseph Smith’s translation of the Bible
A joint statement from Community of Christ and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. A Frequently Asked Questions and Appendix has been released.

Today, Tuesday, March 5, 2024, the responsibility and ownership for the Kirtland Temple, several historic buildings in Nauvoo, and various manuscripts and artifacts officially transferred from Community of Christ to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for an agreed-upon amount. Together, we share an interest in and reverence for these historic sites and items and are committed to preserving them for future generations.

Discussions leading to this landmark agreement commenced in June 2021. “This exchange of assets is significant for our church,” said Stephen M. Veazey, president of Community of Christ. “Through funding from increased endowments, Community of Christ will have greater capacity to pursue our mission priorities around the world, including continuing to fulfill the divinely envisioned purposes for our Temple in Independence, Missouri.”

“We are deeply honored to assume the stewardship of these sacred places, documents, and artifacts,” said Russell M. Nelson, President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. “We thank our friends at Community of Christ for their great care and cooperation in preserving these historical treasures thus far. We are committed to doing the same.”

The Kirtland Temple will remain an historic building. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints plans to reopen it March 25, 2024, for public tours at no charge. Likewise, in Nauvoo, the Smith Family Homestead, the Mansion House and the Red Brick Store will also reopen on March 25, 2024, for year-round public tours at no charge. More details about the transaction, assets, and the other items included in the agreement will be forthcoming.

The historic transfer underscores our long-standing effort to preserve religious and cultural heritage and foster respective opportunities for growth and service to the world.

Community of Christ is an international faith community dedicated to fostering authentic connections with one another and with God. It strives to restore Christ’s peace on Earth and challenge unjust systems that diminish human worth. Community of Christ affirms the intrinsic worth of every person and provides a place to belong, be loved and valued, grow spiritually, and discover a purpose that can change lives and communities.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a worldwide faith, teaches that our Father in Heaven and His Son Jesus Christ have in our day again called a living prophet and restored priesthood authority and covenants to bless families and individuals with joy. Members seek to live and share the gospel of Jesus Christ, care for those in need and unite families for eternity. They cherish the Book of Mormon and the Bible as holy scripture.

THE CHURCH SUPPORTS COMMUNITY FARM FOOD PROJECT

The Memorial Ward in the Richmond Texas Stake in southwest Houston has been supporting the Shamba Ya Amani, Swahili for Farm of Peace community farming project for African families.

The Alief school district has allowed a large unused plot of land for growing vegetables, an important and familiar food for many African families. The Farm of Peace project allows African families who often live in apartments, the ability to grow their own food, something they are very skilled at and at minimal cost. This is also a natural, non-chemicals farm.

According to Kelsey Johnson one of the founding members of the project, it was created as a women led farm. She noted that there is a deep longing to be able to grow food, especially vegetables from their homeland.

The farm has grown from 10 to over 60 raised beds to grow crops in. They now produce food for over 25 families with more now being routed back to the Houston Food Bank. This urban harvest now goes out to the broader community.

Moira, from Sierra Leone in west Africa and one of the originators of the project noted that the garden is hard work, but it is fulfilling work.

Members of the Elders Quorum in the Memorial Ward enjoy supporting this project. Jason Swatsbarg a member of the quorum presidency noted how that it’s real work, but it’s enjoyable and it’s a service project that is always there.

On this day, the weather was uncharacteristically windy and cold...40 degrees in February in Houston, but that didn’t seem to deter the volunteers. They enjoy coming to help.

LIFTING THE LIVES OF FAMILIES IN LIBERIA AFRICA -- The World Food Programme & The Church of Jesus Christ Help Liberians To Become Self-Reliant --

When you look into the eyes of the children at the elementary school in Careysburg, Liberia, it’s easy to think of Jesus’s eternal love for them.

“He said, ‘Suffer the little children to come unto me, for of such is the kingdom of God,’” said Elder S. Gifford Nielsen, President of the Africa West Area of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. “And that’s what we should do. And that’s what we are doing here in Liberia.”

Elder Nielsen and his Second Counselor, Elder Alfred Kyungu, spent this past week observing the fruits of the work of the World Food Programme (WFP) in various parts of Liberia. The Church of Jesus Christ is helping fund WFP’s global efforts to address food insecurity.

In Liberia, nearly 84% of families live on less than US$1.25 a day, and 47% of households are food insecure. This is due in part to a 14-year civil war (1989–2003) that crippled national infrastructure and basic social services.

Elder Nielsen and Elder Kyungu joined World Food Program USA President and CEO Barron Segar to observe the home-grown school feeding program supported by WFP, and took some time to assist in serving meals to school children in Careysburg (about 20 miles east of Monrovia) on Wednesday, January 17, 2024.

“To see the look on these kids’ faces when we handed them a meal was really unbelievable,” Segar said. “They were looking at [the food] because they know that it’s probably their only meal for the day.”

LATTER DAY SAINTS CHURCH LEADERS MINISTERS TO LIBERIAN MAYOR WHOSE SON DIED IN EXPLOSION GAS TANKER - Explosion killed 89 people and severely burned nearly 100 more

During a multiday visit to Liberia, members of the Africa West Area Presidency were driving through Totota and felt impressed to stop at the site of a recent gas tanker explosion. Africa West Area President Elder S. Gifford Nielsen and Second Counselor Elder Alfred Kyungu were pleased that Mayor Clinton Brown was in the city office. They spent a half hour ministering to the mayor, whose oldest son, Issac, died in the explosion. President Emmanuel T. Gbondo of the Totota 1st Branch of the Church was also unexpectedly there at the time of their arrival to provide comfort.

“We are on an eternal journey. I promise you that you will see Isaac again,” said Elder Nielsen said on Tuesday, January 16, 2024. “We teach about eternal family relationships. And as hard as it is to have a separation right now, I promise you that you will see Isaac again.”

On Tuesday, January 16, 2024, Elder S. Gifford Nielsen (middle) and Elder Alfred Kyungu (second from right) comfort Totota Mayor Clinton Brown, who lost his son Isaac in a fuel tanker explosion on December 28, 2023.

The tragedy occurred on December 26, 2023, just 300 yards away from a Latter-day Saint meetinghouse. Church leaders turned the building into a hospital for burn victims and brought in a medical doctor until the local hospital was ready to welcome them. The Church also donated food and medical supplies for victims and their families.

“You see how the Lord is blessing us,” Elder Kyungu said. “I’m witnessing how the Lord’s hands and the Holy Ghost is leading His people.”

Elders Nielsen and Kyungu prayed with Mayor Brown.

“We prayed for him in a circle, standing in front of his office,” Elder Kyungu said. “We prayed for his life, his family, and his wife. Spiritually, we came with the support, with the prayers, with the feelings and the compassion and the love that we expressed to him and his family. He represented all those who lost loved ones.”

Before they parted, Elder Nielsen pledged the Area Presidency’s ongoing support to Mayor Brown.

“We will continue to pray for you,” Elder Nielsen told the mayor, whose office is next door to the meetinghouse. “We will continue to support this community. We will be here for you. We are working with the World Food Programme on some other initiatives. We care deeply about you.

“Brother,” Elder Nielsen said, “I love you.”

The leaders of the Church in West Africa were with World Food Programme (WFP) officials on a weeklong field trip across parts of Liberia. They witnessed firsthand how the Church’s collaboration with WFP is helping Liberians.
