I got a WhatsApp message at midnight from the American-Israeli Lecturer (School of Media Studies, College of Management in Rishon LeZion) who annually invites me to lecture on American Politics in a debate with the representative of the Republicans in Israel, Marc Zell.
His midnight plea to me was:
"COULD YOU TELL ME WHAT THE IMMEDIATE IMPLICATIONS OF BIDEN'S DECISION ON THE CHOICE OF A FUTURE CANDIDATE. WOULD DELEGATES PLEDGED TO BIDEN AUTOMATICALLY HAVE TOTRANSFER THEIR VOTES TO KAMALA HARRIS...WHAT ABOUT MONEY COLLECTED FOR BIDEN?"
My reply to him is:
"Good morning sir,
"Nothing from this point is automatic.
"However, should Camilla Harris receive and accept the nomination, all donations migrate with her because, as you know, it's a president-vice president ticket.
And that's enough of a reason to cement her chances of winning both the nomination and the election.
"I have also heard someone suggest that her running mate should be Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. That would make a few absolute distinctions between the Republicans and the Democrats.
1. The very much older (almost Biden-aged) Trump vs. the younger and effervescent Harris.
2. Two people of color, representing the rainbow of American citizens (that has long been the case for many decades) vs. a totally white slate, representing a racist version of the USA that is a thing of the past.
3. A very clear difference in National agendas, with one being of the past, and one representing the future of America.
4. Two men versus two women, opening the door for the entire spectrum of American citizens to become president, including Jews."
America is moving away from the White, Anglo-Saxon, and Protestant country it was a hundred years ago. And it's moving fast!
Note that some of the "swing states" that are among those moving toward a majority of diversity, color, and mother tongue (Georgia, Michigan, Arizona, Florida, and Wisconsin). Imagine how a Latino VP candidate might tip the scales!
"From 2000 to 2018, 109 counties in 22 states, from California to Kansas to North Carolina, went from majority white to majority nonwhite – that is, counties where non-Hispanic whites are no longer the majority, according to a Pew Research Center analysis of Census Bureau data. (Our analysis includes only counties with a minimum population of 10,000 in 2018. These counties represent 77% of the nation’s 3,142 counties and include 99% of the U.S. population.)
"In 21 of the 25 biggest U.S. counties by population, nonwhite groups together make up more than half of residents. Eight of these counties were majority white in 2000 but are no longer: San Diego, Orange, Riverside and Sacramento (all in California), plus Clark (Nevada), Broward (Florida), Tarrant (Texas) and Wayne (Michigan).
