🍁 IT'S COMPLICATED: 🇬🇧
JOHN A. MACDONALD'S RELATIONSHIP STATUS
WITH INDIANS* 🪶

📰 Sir John A. Macdonald fully accepted the conventional wisdom of his day:
that the First Nations had to be fully assimilated [integrated] into mainstream society.

He wanted to see Indigenous people become full citizens of the British empire.

In his day, assimilation was seen as a sign of progress. Today, some see it as cultural genocide.

📰 Macdonald knew well the first two Canadian Status Indians to study medicine in Canadian universities:

Oronhytekha (“Burning Cloud”), and Mississauga Chief Kahkewaquonaby (“The Waving Plume” or “Sacred Feathers”) aka Methodist Minister Peter Jones.

Macdonald's policies could be seen as ruthless, perhaps the greatest failure of his career. But to those status Indians with property, he showed a gentler side

🍁 HOW JOHN A. MACDONALD 🇬🇧
GAVE INDIANS / FIRST NATIONS THE VOTE 🗳
- in the face of fierce political opposition
And almost gave it to women

FACT:
Despite what you've read...
Despite what people tell you...
No matter what you believe...

MACDONALD's Conservative government gave
FULL VOTING RIGHTS
TO INDIAN MEN -
WITHOUT THEM GIVING UP THEIR INDIAN STATUS 🪶

already had the vote the moment Manitoba joined Canada 🍁 🗳
(How do you think Louis Riel got elected to Parliament?)

And Macdonald almost gave the vote to women ✅

National Post

📰 Macdonald wanted native people to gain the franchise, an act at that time of immense symbolic importance, without losing any of their rights under either the Indian Act or any of their treaties.

📰 By the manner of his extension of the vote to Indians — a model of integration as opposed to the discredited alternatives of either assimilation or apartheid — Macdonald was even further ahead, almost by a century.

His initiative affecting indigenous people did not out-live him, though:
in 1898 it was cancelled by the newly elected Wilfrid Laurier.

Thereafter, native people continued to be denied the vote, all the way to 1960 when John Diefenbaker restored Macdonald’s initiative.

💀 🍁 THE GENOCIDE THAT WASN'T ⁉️

🇨🇦 THE TRUTH IS
CANADA NEVER WITNESSED
“cultural genocide,”
never mind “genocide.”

Eurasia Review
read p. 6 of the TRC Report:

📜 Despite the coercive measures that the government adopted, it failed to achieve its policy goals. Although Aboriginal peoples and cultures have been badly damaged, they continue to exist. 📜

That is a true statement and it undercuts what was said on p. 1 about residential schools being an example of “cultural genocide.”

True genocides allow for few, if any, survivors.

In his book, Genocide, historian William D. Rubenstein writes that “Genocide is normally carried out against an ethnic or religious minority, and entails the deliberate killing of most or all members of a collective group for the mere fact of being a member of that group.”

The Report cites not a single person who was killed in the residential schools. So where was the genocide?

There are two testimonials about killing in the 535-page Report. One was made by an Indigenous woman who said she witnessed her older brother kill one of her other brothers when she was nine.

The other cites a 2014 document that claims that “1,017 Aboriginal women and girls were killed and 164 were missing.”

If this is genocide, then it has nothing to do with the residential schools.

These killings took place between 1980 and 2012.

The residential schools were closed in 1969.

He argues that “the use of the term ‘genocide’ to describe a policy, however wrong-headed, in which no one is killed and whose aim is to enhance the life-chances of those affected…
seems to fly in the face of common sense.

So, indeed, there should be profound dissatisfaction with the use of the term ‘genocide’ in this way.”

If we don’t distinguish between cultural imperialism and cultural genocide—never mind “genocide”—we are belittling what happened to Jews in Hitler’s Germany.

We need to stop with the drama and the hyperbole—there was no genocide, cultural or otherwise, in the Canadian residential schools.

There has been much recent discussion about the Report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada. It found that 150,000 Indigenous children were taken from their homes and forced to atte…

🪓 🪶 IROQUOIS WARS 💀 🏹
🍁 BEAVER WARS 🦫

The Iroquois Wars, also known as the Beaver Wars and the French and Iroquois Wars, were a series of 17th-century conflicts involving the Haudenosaunee Confederacy (also known as the Iroquois or Five Nations, then including the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga and Seneca), numerous other First Nations, and French colonial forces.

The wars represent the intense struggle for control over resources in the early colonial period and resulted in the permanent dispersal or destruction of several First Nations in the Eastern Woodlands.

With the Wendat nation effectively destroyed and the Neutral crushed, the Haudenosaunee increased their raids on the Mohican, Sokoki and Abenaki.

After concentrated Haudenosaunee attacks, the Erie were absorbed in 1657

NB It's curious that
The Canadian Encyclopedia goes out of it's way to avoid using hot buttons trigger words for the Iroquois wars

Instead of saying
it says that the Iroquois "destroyed" the Huron.

And it says that the Neutrals were "crushed" by the Iroquois.

And instead of saying that the Iroquois "forcibly assimilated" their enemies...

The Canadian Encyclopedia says that the Erie tribe and the Susquehannock nation were "absorbed."

Encyclopaedia Britannica

📰 Proclamation of 1763, proclamation declared by the British crown at the end of the French and War in North America, mainly intended to conciliate the Native Americans by checking the encroachment of settlers on their lands.

📰 In the centuries since the proclamation, it has become one of the cornerstones of Native American law in the United States and Canada.

📰 It forbade settlement on Indian territory, ordered those settlers already there to withdraw, and strictly limited future settlement. For the first time in the history of European colonization in the New World, the proclamation formalized the concept of Native American land titles, prohibiting issuance of patents to any lands claimed by a tribe unless the Indian title had first been extinguished by purchase or treaty:

IN OTHER WORDS

It's the EXACT OPPOSITE of what SJWs and activists are saying about The Doctrine of Discovery.

Instead of saying that "this region is no-man's land" and "you can take whatever you want because you have a God-given right"...

The racist White Colonial Imperialist German King George is telling the colonies:

THIS LAND IS INDIAN TERRITORY.

IT IS THEIRS BY RIGHT.

YOU CANNOT JUST GRAB IT AND TAKE IT.

AND ANYTHING YOU'VE TAKEN - YOU MUST GIVE BACK!

Oh - and BTW - the Indians are UNDER MY PROTECTION!

👑 Not to mention Queen Victoria

BTW You realise that the reason that John A. Macdonald was so determined to build the Canadian Pacific Railway 🚂🛤

Wasn't because he had a thing for trains 🚊

It was because building the CPR was a condition of BC joining Confederation

And Macdonald was determined not to let BC fall into American hands

the way that "Southern Columbia" had been stolen away to become the Oregon Territory.

BRITISH COLUMBIA DAY!
Today, 1 August, is British Columbia Day, a statutory holiday falling on the first Monday of August.

It was the explorations of the British Captains James Cook and George Vancouver, and the concessions of Spain in 1794, which established British claims over the coastal area north of California.

Until 1858, the region which now comprises the Canadian Province of British Columbia was an unorganised area of British North America comprising two fur trading districts: New Caledonia, and the Columbia District - the territory drained by the Columbia River.

The province's name was chosen by Queen Victoria, when it became a British colony in 1858.

She chose British Columbia to distinguish what was the British sector of the Columbia District from that of the United States ("American Columbia" or "Southern Columbia"), which had become the Oregon Territory in 1848.

British Columbia has an amazing flag!

The top part consists of the Union flag with a crown in the center, representing the links with Britain and the Canadian Monarchy. The lower part of the flag consists of a setting sun on a background of blue and white waves, representing the western geographical location of the province beside the Pacific Ocean.

The sun may also reflect the provincial motto "Splendor Sine Occasu" (beauty that never diminishes) - or, the sun that never sets (on the British Empire).

At 363,764 square miles, it is almost 4 times the land mass of the UK (94,060 sq mi).
It is also Simcoe Day in Ontario, to honour the founding of the province by its first Lieutenant Governor, John Graves Simcoe.

The splendid photograph is courtesy of this article, "Bear, flower, fish, tree and more: the symbols of British Columbia" at: https://www.timescolonist.com/bear-flower-fish-tree-and-more-the-symbols-of-british-columbia-1.568719
