Jessie Holmes takes the lead in

Jessie Holmes led the front pack out of Old Woman Cabin at 8:20 am Sunday, followed by Dallas Seavey at 8:42. They were the two fastest teams on the previous run, and this is the point of the race when teams start pushing, and speed is the ultimate sign of strength.

Ryan Redington's GPS is still showing camped at Old Woman, but that's hard to believe. He's either taking a long nap, or his tracker fell off.

It'll be interesting to see what they do from here, there's not an aggressive schedule that makes much sense, they're too far to get to White Mountain in 3 runs, and 4 is really awkward with the checkpoint distances, and 5 is not a competitive schedule, so it'll get interesting. The teams seem content to play it safe, so we may see teams stop in Unalakleet, although I'm sure some will push through if the trail permits.

Monday Morning Update

Dallas Seavey pulled away from the field late Sunday night, arriving in the coastal hub of Unalakleet in second position, but passing leader Jessie Holmes resting there and continuing another hour down the trail before camping alone in the Blueberry Hills. His team of Prophet, Flounder, Dingo, Sebastian, Titan, Pluto, Aero, Gallo, Timon, Cobra, Frisbee, and Frank then posted a blazing 5hr 10min run time to Shaktoolik, gaining an hour on the nearest competitor, Holmes.

Dallas again opted to skip through the checkpoint, although Frisbee stayed with the volunteers there, and Dallas continued with 11 dogs.

Dallas and team camped out at the Shelter Cabin about 14 miles north of Shaktoolik, arriving at 11:10pm. We're expecting him to depart around 3 am Alaska time, and go through Koyuk between 7 and 8 am Alaska time.

Presumably he'll camp 2-3 hours north of Koyuk, and then proceed to the mandatory 8 hour rest in White Mountain.

His record 6th Iditarod win is within sight, but Dallas knows better than anyone how fast things can change. he still has over 200 miles to cover, and a lot can happen in 200 miles of the roughest terrain on earth.

If all goes well, we'd expect a winner in Nome on Tuesday afternoon.
