"For whether we are white or copper-skinned, we need to paint with all the colours of the wind." 🎨
I've been relatively quiet about using my voice on this topic as I honestly haven't been sure what to say, but saying nothing is not an option. I really went back and forth over this look when I decided to do it a few weeks ago but it feels so much more important now.
"Colours of The Wind," from Disney's Pocahontas has always had a special place in my heart as it beautifully comments on how ignorance and racism are not only prevalent but a hindrance on the human race.
And, it's just as prevalent, if not more than it was when the song was created over two decades ago.
My blood, as well as that of millions all over the world, has been boiling. So many of us have been broken and angry. And, frankly, I don't think I'll ever understand how someone can hate another human being based on the colour of their skin. I simply cannot comprehend it. But, from the broken comes the chance to rebuild.
With all that's going on in the world, I wanted to use my art to pay homage to the song and to the beauty of colour - a God-given gift that many are using as an excuse to commit heinous atrocities all over the world.
A response to this idea that I've seen and heard many a time is "I don't see colour." Like hate, but also like love, just because you can't see it, doesn't mean it isn't there. If you can't see colour, you can't see what's happening because of it all over the world. Choosing to ignore colour is not only a luxury many cannot partake in but it also ceases your ability to see so much beauty. 🌈
So, please see colour, look for it in everything you do, embrace it and fight to protect it. We simply have to. ✊
To my brothers and sisters of beautiful colour, we are with you and we're going to fight for you. ❤️
