Back in the 90s Digidub records emerged from the South London squat scene with a string of way out, critically acclaimed and slightly deranged 12 inch singles and albums. As time went by, scrap yards and bus garages were rinsed of their sounds and tracks made entirely from these found sounds along with more ‘usual’ tracks were tearing venues apart all around the place. Nearly 30 years ago, with in

terest in bass music at an all time high, the label has been reborn online, with the first installments from their weighty back catalogue now available.

In 2001 Lee Berwick was commissioned by the Museum of London to walk from Tower Bridge to the source of the river Thames, recording and filming as he went (the walk took three weeks through a crisp and frosty January).

Lee produced a short film from the resulting sounds and footage which was then shown at the Museum of London for three months as a part of a looped installation. The film went on to be shown at various festivals and short film events around the UK and Europe.

The following year, Lee collaborated on a dance project in Sweden with the SU-EN Butoh Company. Entitled Yatra, the piece drew on Lee’s walk for the choreographic ideas, while the sounds Lee had recorded were used as the live soundtrack to the hour-long performance.

This release is a version of the dance soundtrack which was originally released in 2002 to coincide with the dance show’s premiere at the great Fylkingen venue in central Stockholm.

Houston is the home of the NASA space centre, where scientists have discovered that the waves of time that usually proceed in a linear forward motion have been rent and twisted due to the space program, leading to strange chronological anomalies starting to manifest in the area around Houston city.

First there was DJ Screw, who, powered by drank, immersed himself in this new sequence of unfolding reality where time, music and space atrophied, and so screwed and chopped hip hop was born. Then Cumbia music that was brought to Houston by the Colombians became tainted by the shift in the elemental time-frame field - by the time it had been exported south to Monterey, Mexico, it had morphed into the wonderful Cumbias Rejbajados.

Now the time field rent first felt in Houston is sending it's waves around the globe, with time slowing down and speeding up on a global scale. This has now caused The Whooozy Lounge - a phenomena whereby music at a ‘usual’ speed is mixed and played alongside slowed down dub, charity shop specials, and anything else that comes to mind. Field recordings are liberally smeared across the top and home-made oscillators warble in the background - NASA have inadvertently created the music for the messy, 3 day in, festival goer who has wandered off sideways! Matter Out Of Place or M.O.O.P. is composed from sounds Lee Berwick recorded in the labyrinths of Stockholm’s Slussen one-way system and travel terminus. As they are now sadly demolished, M.O.O.P. is an historic record of what it was to walk through these strange tunnels 20 years ago.

The piece was first performed live by Lee as the soundtrack to a performance by the Suen Butoh Company at the excellent Fylkingen venue in Stockholm in 2001.

Originally released only as a limited edition CD, in a sense M.O.O.P. is the one-way system in dub 😆
