Today marks 50 years since the groundbreaking show Good Times first aired. It ran for six seasons on CBS until August 1, 1979. It aired 133 episodes in total. It was the first sitcom to portray a two parent African-American family.
The show was a spin off of the TV show Maude, in which Florida Evans plays Maude's housekeeper.

It was produced by Norman Lear and created by Eric Monte and Mike Evans. Did you know that Mike Evans was the original Lionel from the Jeffersons?

The iconic theme song was sung by Jim Gilstrap, Sondra "Blinky" Williams and backed by a choir.
According to the writers Alan and Marilyn Bergman, the original lyrics are "hangin' in and jiving" despite 'hanging in a chow line" being popularized by a Chappelle Show skit called "I Know Black People"

I hope you all enjoyed your 4th of July weekend. I used to always work this holiday to get extra money since I don't really celebrate this holiday. Now I just enjoy my extra day off. My peace of mind is more valuable than a few coins. Stay cool, be safe and have a great day on purpose!

I admittedly struggle with using the proper pronouns and understanding everything about the LGBTQIA+ community, but I consider myself an ally and always inclusive of everyone because I see people first. Growing up I always felt out of place. I used to be embarrassed or scared to speak up or speak out when I didn't agree with something or liked things that were outside of what was considered the norm. The older I get, the more comfortable I am being different. It takes all different types of people to make up this world. That's what makes life interesting! Imagine how boring it would be if everyone looked, sounded and dressed the same. Go out there and be a Fruit Loop in a world of Cheerios and have a great week on purpose.

Happy Memorial Day!

The earliest account of what would later become Memorial Day, was organized in a former Confederate Prison Camp in Charleston, S.C. on May 1, 1865. The celebration was established by over 1,000 newly freed African Americans, in addition to U.S. Colored Troops regiments and a small group of white Charlestonians.

This group came together to honor the 257 Union soldiers that died as a result of the poor conditions of the Confederate Prison Camp during the war. They removed the soldiers from a mass grave that the Confederates made and created proper burial grounds for Union soldiers. Together they sang hymns, set flowers, and gave readings in honor of the soldiers’ sacrifice.

The Culture Tour has come to a close with a successful 30 city tour run. I caught the show in Chicago and St. Louis. Thankful that everyone stayed healthy and safe.
