Ear Hustle Podcast The daily realities of life inside and outside prison, shared by those living it
(690)

Ear Hustle, from Radiotopia, brings you stories of life inside prison, shared and produced by those living it. The podcast is a partnership between Earlonne Woods and Antwan Williams, currently incarcerated at San Quentin State Prison, and Nigel Poor, a Bay Area artist. The team works in San Quentin’s media lab to produce stories that are sometimes difficult, often funny, and always honest, offering a nuanced view of people living within the American prison system.

Setting up the new podcast studio at the California Institution for Women (CIW) with our friends from the Uncuffed training program — doesn't it look nice? Ear Hustle's new producer Cat will be heading up our presence at CIW, working directly with incarcerated women who want to pursue creative audio. Find out more at https://buff.ly/46BuXBF.

Huge thanks to Mellon Foundation and Radiotopia from PRX for making this possible. We can't wait to share more women's voices with you in the episodes ahead, and don't worry — we'll continue to have stories from San Quentin as always!

Ear Hustling Together: Momo Peterson listens to Ear Hustle with her mother (pictured with EH OG Antwan Williams), and shared this note: "I brought my mom to Philly to come to the meet and greet / live show. Best thing I ever did! We listened to the podcast all the way up (about 2 hours) and she was fascinated. Meeting all the lovely folks that make my No. 1 podcast was an honor! We had a great time." Thanks, Momo! Say hi to mama for us.

Ear Hustling Together: Here's longtime EH listeners Sarah and Matt Gray, from Cincinnati, Ohio. Matt introduced the podcast to Sarah over five years ago, and they save episodes until they can listen together ❤️ They often listen to Ear Hustle while they travel (as shown, in Colorado). Ear Hustle Extra in your feeds! Celebrating our 100th episode last year got the Ear Hustle team thinking about all the stories we've told since 2017. Over the next few months, EHers will talk about and listen to some of their favorite episodes from the archives — ones that they feel warrant another look. In this one, Nigel and Bruce revisit "This Place," originally released in October 2018, which explores different ways of looking at San Quentin.

Introducing our CIW Senior Producer, Cat Schuknecht! Cat will be training our first cohort of audio storytellers at the California Institution for Women, in conjunction with the Uncuffed training program. She previously taught podcasting at Loyola Marymount University, and worked at Gimlet Media, NPR, and on shows like Hidden Brain and Reveal.

Check your feeds! In this special collab with The Moth, we share one man's story about using a medical condition to break the isolation of prison, and Earlonne and Nigel catch up with the storyteller to find out what's happened in his life since getting out. Today we're introducing you to one of our favorite recent podcasts. In 1997, a racially motivated attack and its aftermath roiled Chicago. "You Didn’t See Nothin" is a seven-part series that revisits that crime and explores how its impact radiated into many lives, including that of Yohance Lacour, the show's host.
You can listen to the first episode, and find out more about the series, at https://buff.ly/3zqv32d.

We celebrated the end of this season by sharing a meal with our inside team and presenting them with accolades as well as some inside-joke-y superlatives:
🏆 Sadiq Davis: For excellence in making sonic zips and zaps (and detecting hoarders)
🏆 Tony de Trinidad: For excellence in asking awkward questions (and talking to buildings)
🏆 Tam Nguyen: For excellence in getting COs to talk (and scoring weepy stories)
🏆 Tony Tafoya: For excellence in herding cats (and salad appreciation)

Keep an ear on your feed, because we'll be in there all summer with some surprises. And back with our fall season in September!
