As a veterinary technician specializing in behavior, I deeply appreciate every referral I receive. In my work with cat and dog cases, I often encounter situations that require both behavior and medical management. Collaborating with fellow veterinary professionals is essential, and positive connections make the process smoother for everyone involved.

I firmly believe that by working together, we can provide exceptional care and support to our clients and their beloved pets. It's crucial to recognize that medical issues can significantly impact an animal's behavior. By bridging the gap between veterinary medicine and behavior, we create a holistic approach that addresses both physical health and emotional well-being.

🚨 Historic Moment Alert 🚨

At the recent AVMA conference, Ashli Selke, CVT, RVT, ( IVTA President Elect) made a powerful stand at the AVMA House of Delegates. She addressed the House with concerns about the verbiage in the PVME document which specifically concerned veterinary technicians. In a dramatic turn, the AVMA turned off the lights during her speech. Despite this, Ashli stood strong with grit and grace, defending our title and the recognition we deserve as a profession.
💪🐾

It was regarding the voting by the AVMA House of Delegates on the PVME Principle of Veterinary Medical Ethics. The original language to be voted on stated:

“A veterinarian should only represent those who are credentialed as a veterinary technician in their state as a “veterinary technician”.

A Texas state delegate added the word “credentialed” to be placed before the words “veterinary technician” changing the sentence to

“A veterinarian should only represent those who are credentialed as a veterinary technician in their state as a “credentialed veterinary technician”.

It was voted on and only 4.5% of veterinarians stood in opposition.

Now what this does by adding the word “credentialed” in front of that statement means according to the PVME, states can continue to keep using the lay term title of “veterinary technicians” to anyone they want to. This does nothing to protect credentialed veterinary technicians. She addressed the House about the verbiage in the PVME. This does nothing for the general population and veterinarians from continuing to use the title “veterinary technician” for anyone they want to.

Ashli, saw this for what it was and stood up for veterinary technicians everywhere and petitioned the AVMA President to be heard and fight against the language. Not before having the lights turned out on her in a crowded room full of the countries representing veterinarians, but she still stood. She waited for the lights to come back on and continued to speak for credentialed veterinary technicians and their fight for a fair PVME document that was not only to protect veterinarians but to protect technicians as well. She voiced “that this in no way protects credentialed veterinary technicians and what they are striving for every day. And that this language in fact perpetuates the abuse that has occurred for years, if not decades in our profession. She urged the House of Delegates to bring this back up again in the future and think about the language that they had voted on.” Even though she had the literal lights in the auditorium turned out on her, and they asked for someone to tell a “joke” to keep the mood light. Nevertheless, She stood there for our profession and voiced what we all wanted to say.

Her unwavering commitment and bravery serve as an inspiration to us all. Let's continue to support and advocate for our profession with the same passion and determination! 🌟

Vetmed, we need to have a talk, Im exhausted.

As a registered veterinary technician, I pursue a unique career path, one that merits recognition on its own terms. Not all of us aspire to become veterinarians! While we often collaborate with vets, our roles go beyond mere assistance. Vet techs operate independently within our well-defined scope of practice, which includes direct patient care, case management, setting nursing standards, ensuring quality assurance, and managing complex care systems. We are integral members of the healthcare team, making significant contributions.

It's frustrating that we're still having to make this case! When will we demand the recognition we rightfully deserve?

On top of the above, the lack of awareness about Veterinary Technician Specialists (VTS), including those specializing in behavior, is surprising, even to me. Many veterinarians and behavior colleagues are unaware of our existence.

A VTS, similar to a boarded veterinarian like a Veterinary Behaviorist or Internal Medicine Specialist, possesses advanced knowledge and experience in a specific area of medicine.

Despite my unwavering dedication to achieving VTS status in behavior, continuing to learn, and proactively communicating, I encounter discouraging obstacles. Recognizing behavior as a crucial aspect of veterinary medicine, I advocate for a collaborative approach that integrates both medical and behavioral interventions. Leveraging my expertise in both fields, I assist caregivers in seeking veterinary consultation, easing anxiety during vet visits, and providing comprehensive observations, including pain assessments. It's disheartening when veterinarians refuse dialogue, especially when I initiated the referral process for the client's veterinary care.

Let's persist in advocating for recognition and effective collaboration!

🚫 Let's challenge the notion of whisking pets "to the back" during nontrue emergent procedures

"The back" gives the illusion that something is bad going to occur and what occurs is often left up to the caregivers imagination.

I understand as a veterinary professional it can be scary/intimidating to draw blood in the room in front of the caregiver if that is not what you are familiar with to start.
I started doing everything in the room for euthanasia's when I was a baby tech and it was scary but I would just communicate what I was doing throughout the procedure I was always transparent, and caregivers never got upset, they were thankful and it was best for me and the patient.

Also, caregivers, empathize with vet staff being intimidated by doing things in the room in front of you, be kind and understand that they may not hit the vein immediately just like human medicine, we are all humans.

See the post below and Chirrups and Chatter for more tips and to help understand why many veterinary professionals are advocating for this
