Vetmed, we need to have a talk, Im exhausted.
As a registered veterinary technician, I pursue a unique career path, one that merits recognition on its own terms. Not all of us aspire to become veterinarians! While we often collaborate with vets, our roles go beyond mere assistance. Vet techs operate independently within our well-defined scope of practice, which includes direct patient care, case management, setting nursing standards, ensuring quality assurance, and managing complex care systems. We are integral members of the healthcare team, making significant contributions.
It's frustrating that we're still having to make this case! When will we demand the recognition we rightfully deserve?
On top of the above, the lack of awareness about Veterinary Technician Specialists (VTS), including those specializing in behavior, is surprising, even to me. Many veterinarians and behavior colleagues are unaware of our existence.
A VTS, similar to a boarded veterinarian like a Veterinary Behaviorist or Internal Medicine Specialist, possesses advanced knowledge and experience in a specific area of medicine.
Despite my unwavering dedication to achieving VTS status in behavior, continuing to learn, and proactively communicating, I encounter discouraging obstacles. Recognizing behavior as a crucial aspect of veterinary medicine, I advocate for a collaborative approach that integrates both medical and behavioral interventions. Leveraging my expertise in both fields, I assist caregivers in seeking veterinary consultation, easing anxiety during vet visits, and providing comprehensive observations, including pain assessments. It's disheartening when veterinarians refuse dialogue, especially when I initiated the referral process for the client's veterinary care.
Let's persist in advocating for recognition and effective collaboration!
