We weren’t planning on camping this Labor Day weekend. Mainly because I didn’t make any reservations. Knowing that my weekend workload is going to soon increase, last week I decided to see if any spots were available up and down the state. Everywhere was booked. I sent a short email to a handful of parks asking about availability and Morro Dunes RV park responded. They had one “partial” spot left. Next to a bathroom and laundry building. This partial spot was small and didn’t have a cable TV hookup. That is the perfect spot for our . I called back immediately and booked it. The nice lady on the phone really wanted to make sure my trailer was under 20 feet long for this spot. I said it’s 19 feet from hitch to bumper. She was relieved. The trip was myself and my two older daughters. The baby and stayed home. One thing I immediately noticed was our spot was a high foot-traffic area because it was located next to the bathrooms. (This park has a handful of tent camping spots as well.) I didn’t even unhook the trailer before two people walked up and started asking questions about the Mantis. This was a common occurrence over the three day weekend. Guys would come up, chat with me, go get their wives and have them look at it. I felt like a true ambassador. It was fun meeting so many people (from a distance, of course). 😷 This park is located in Morro Bay, California across the street from Morro Strands State Beach. A perfect Labor Day location. We were in space R-4 and could easily throw a rock to the beach. The kids loved riding their bikes and collecting sand dollars everyday. This RV park has some pretty tight cul-de-sac spots, where they squeeze in 5-6 rigs in to. Some of the more spacious spots were in the back of the park, opposite the beach. This is not a fancy RV resort, but it’s location is absolutely perfect for anyone who wants to visit Morro Bay, California.

With Morro Strand State Park shut down we were determined to still head to the California coast to beat the Valley heat (and smoke). The is a great RV resort right next to the beach. (5 min walk) we paid for a “premium” site (no. 89) which had a great grassy picnic area and fire pit. As I scoped out the other sites I found sites no. 92 and 92.5 had the best grass areas. I would also recommend 97, 98 & 99 as some of the best premium back-in spots they have in the park. Again, everyone who walked by our had positive comments about the distinct exterior design of the trailer. Not sure when or where our next adventure will be, but we do know it’s always fun with our party of 5 traveling together.

Wow. Site no. 121 at is a small but mighty spot. Lake front with electrical only hookups. Perfect for our There is a fire pit and a pretty steep hike to the water. The best part about Camp Edison is the marina beaches. Available to the park campers these beaches are probably the best on the Shaver Lake shorelines. Day use passes are also available but they sell out quickly. I haven’t been here since I was a kid. We are only here for one night, but we will definitely be back. (It is only 51 miles from our house)

Trip number 2 was a success. In these crazy times of looking for campsites in California, I found a couple nights available at a KOA near Santa Cruz. We booked this KOA because of its proximity to many beaches. This was our first experience at a KOA RV resort. It is definitely one of the most expensive RV resorts I have researched, but this park was built for families. Most of the amenities were shut down due to Covid. Having just visited Sequoia NP a couple weeks ago, I found a new admiration for National Park camping and National Park pricing. The KOA sites are small and super close together. Our Mantis felt out of place surrounded by mega 5th wheels and luxurious Class A motor homes. Our kids enjoyed riding their bikes around the park and roasting marshmallows over the camp fire. I finally got around to deploying the RTT that came with our purchase. The Tepui low-pro tent makes for a great additional bedroom for our family of 5. (Although our kids are a bit too young to sleep up there, they had fun playing in it) The definitely turns heads in every campground we have visited. We were just notified that our next reservation at Morro Strands State Park at the end of August was cancelled due to the rising Covid cases in California. So the search continues. maybe in our near future if we can’t secure any more summer reservations.

First trip in our Mantis was a success. Lodgepole campground in California’s Sequoia National Park is really beautiful and only about 2.5 hours from our home. Mostly tent camping with a few small RV spots scattered throughout the campground, split between an awesome running river with several swimming holes. Elevation is 6700 feet. Some of the “RV” spots our very tight and have some weird approach angles so beware. Drive a lap around your campsite loop to determine the best direction to back in. We were in space 196. Great spot, but there are better ones closer to the river. No hookups at any sites but there is a dump station on the premises. I dropped in two new Battle Born lithium batteries prior to our trip and they worked perfectly. I still need to upgrade the stock charge controller and add some portable solar panels, among other things. We camped for 2 nights and 3 days with zero solar or generator power. My Victorn battery monitor wasn’t working properly (probably because I installed it in a hurry) so I was just patiently waiting for the batteries to drain, but they never did. I ran my Dometic dorm fridge and a Truma C44 fridge for the entire trip with zero issues. We now know that we use 20 gallons of fresh water in about 72 hours. (Family of 5 + 4 showers + excessive pandemic handwashing) It also takes us about 72 hours to fill up the cassette toilet too! 🙂
