RS. 69 CRORE EMBEZZLED FROM SBS, CID CASE FILED AGAINST 3 SENIOR BANK OFFICIALS
GANGTOK,: A whopping sum of Rs. 69 crore was embezzled from State Bank of Sikkim (SBS) allegedly by three senior officials of the State-run bank. The SBS has filed a FIR with the CID Sikkim Police against the three accused officials, all of whom are posted in the SBS head-office in Gangtok.
Though much of the embezzled money has been recovered by the SBS authorities, there is still about Rs. 19 crore that has to be recovered, as per the bank authorities.
SBS managing director PW Bhutia informed SIKKIM EXPRESS that the misappropriation of Rs. 69 crore from the bank was detected during the routine checking of the bank accounts. The SBS has a mechanism in place where such wrongdoings are detected and traced, he said.
It is not uncommon for such activities being reported in the financial institutions, but SBS following it's mechanism in place was able to trace, locate the embezzled funds and have been able to recover majority of the fund which tunes to Rs. 50 crore-Rs 52 crore, said Bhutia.
The remaining small portion of the embezzled funds is lying in other sources following which a FIR was lodged with the CID Sikkim Police for its earliest recovery, he added.
In its complaint, the SBS has named the three accused senior bank officials for allegedly embezzling over Rs. 69 crore from the bank’s book. The accused SBS officials are general manager (operations) Dorjee Tshering Lepcha, assistant manager (IT) Tsewang Dorjee Lepcha and senior accounts assistant Tilak Rai. All of them are posted at the SBS head-office in Gangtok.
According to sources, the three accused senior SBS officials worked in connivance with others to defraud the SBS. They allegedly used various accounts to commit the scam. They have also opened various fixed deposits in the name of a State government assistant engineer besides investing their ill-gotten money of the SBS in various immovable and moveable assets, as per the complaint.
CID has registered a case under IPC sections 34, 120B, 409, 420 and 477A read with relevant sections of IT Act 2000.
Meanwhile, the SBS managing director appealed to the people of Sikkim and the bank customers not to panic as all appropriate actions have been initiated for recovery of all the stolen money. The SBS today is an institution worth Rs. 10,000 crore and the misappropriation that has taken place is miniscule compared to the bank’s operation value, he said.
Our focus is also on initiating stringent action and punishment of the officials involved in the embezzlement so that such incidents do not take place in future, said the SBS managing director.
