🛶 So great to have the Prime Minister join us for the 2023 North American Indigenous Games Canoe/Kayak kick-off ceremony on beautiful Lake Banook in Mi'kma'ki!
It was a true honour to join Mi'kmaw Chiefs for a paddle across the lake to the ceremony. And it was very special to take part in a smudging and learn more about Mi'kmaw culture and traditions from the many amazing conversations I had this morning.
Special thanks to Aaron Prosper for emceeing the ceremony!
It is so fitting to have take place on Lake Banook. The Shubenacadie waterway, which includes Lake Book (Panuk), has been a very important transportation route for the Mi'kmaq since time immemorial.

Celebrating the People of the Dawn, the Opening Ceremony kicked off the 2023 North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) with a celebration of the language, traditions, wisdom and culture of the host Mi’kmaq Nation.
The Opening Ceremony took place at the Scotiabank Centre in Halifax and featured over a dozen of performers that helped welcome more than 4,800 athletes, managers, coaches and mission staff, across 16 different sports.
The Games run from July 15 to July 23, across the Halifax Regional Municipality, Millbrook First Nation and Sipekne’katik First Nation.

The 2023 North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) have officially begun! Competitions in 16 sports are being hosted within 21 venues across Kjipuktuk (Halifax), Dartmouth, Millbrook First Nation, and Sipekne'katik.
This year, our foundation has collaborated with the NAIG committee & Mi'kmaw Native Friendship Centre to support an Elders in Residence Program!
The objectives of the Elders in Residence program are to offer “Brave Spaces” - spaces designated for athletes to decompress during the week and for elders and youth to sit down for the purposes of counseling, traditional teachings, or medicinal consulting.
We believe it's important that athletes who have traveled far from their communities still have access to spiritual support and guidance while they are in Kjipuktuk. Having elders in residence will allow youth to find the support they may need.
