The Apprenticeship Service supports employers in hiring new first-year apprentices in 39 Red Seal trades. It also helps first-year apprentices get the hands-on work experience they need for a career in the skilled trades.

Small-Medium sized employers in Canada with less than 500 paid employees are eligible for $5,000 or $10,000 grants to offset the costs of hiring and training first-year apprentices.

Meet Marilyn Francis: Boilermaker, 128 Local

Marilyn decided to make a career change when her job in the telecommunication industry was no longer bringing her joy. Changing careers as a middle-aged woman with a family to support was a difficult decision but Marilyn has always had an interest in construction. When she connected with family members already in the trades, she knew from their stories that she would be able to find fulfillment and success in the skilled trades, even as a woman.

Marilyn was no longer going to let her gender hold her back from achieving a career she wanted and would excel at.

On top of a successful career, Marilyn encourages other women to join the trades by seeking out trade expos and career fairs focused on recruiting young talent. Marilyn continues to strive for success as a tradesperson in a male-dominated industry and now shares her own experiences and the benefits of joining the skilled trades; equal pay, career advancement, and high-paying salaries to other women who are interested in the skilled trades.

Meet Amanda Jacobs, living her dream at Ontario Power Generation OPG’s R.H. Saunders Generating Station.

Hailing from the nearby Mohawk Nation of Akwesasne, Jacobs always had her sights set on working at the sprawling hydro station on the St. Lawrence River in The City of Cornwall.

In 2017, that dream began to take shape when she took on a summer placement at the plant while completing a two-year Welding and Fabrication Technician course at St. Lawrence College. She learned a lot that summer while working with a crew of experienced mechanical technicians.

Meet some of the dynamic women on the move with Helmets to Hardhats Canada organization. From the Military to the skilled trades, these women are no strangers to breaking down biases and barriers.

Captain LINDA JUNG: Administration Officer, 818 Falcon Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron and Training Officer, 246 Progress Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron

Linda has been working with army and air cadets on and off for a little over a decade. For the past seven years, she has been working exclusively with air cadets. She is grateful for the opportunities and experiences. Being in the CAF and working with cadets has been an exhilarating career. She has always felt valued by the Canadian Armed Forces throughout her tenure.

The leadership, both on the CAF side and the skills she develops within the cadets is unique and has been one of the most successful youth leadership programs. Linda has registered with Helmets to Hardhats for the opportunity to learn about the skilled trades in construction. So far, the experience has been eye-opening and invaluable.

She enjoys working with her hands and using tools to turn ideas into tangible pieces of work, she hopes to pursue a second career in carpentry where she can continue to hone her skills. Linda is encouraging other women and cadets who are deciding on their next step to “go for it!”

She says, “we can become anything we set our minds and hearts to.

“Not everyone gets to see the work that goes into taking down a unit, dismantling it, and putting it back together.”

Hailing from the nearby Mohawk Nation of Akwesasne, Jacobs always had her sights set on working at the sprawling hydro station on the St. Lawrence River in The City of Cornwall

In 2017, that dream began to take shape when she took on a summer placement at the plant while completing a two-year Welding and Fabrication Technician course at St. Lawrence College. She learned a lot that summer while working with a crew of experienced mechanical technicians.

After completing the program in 2018, she fulfilled her goal as she was hired on at R.H. Saunders GS as a Service Trades Maintainer, a job that involves working with a crew of mechanical technicians to take care of station equipment and components.

Since taking on the role, she hasn’t been content to stand still. Jacobs is taking every opportunity to continue expanding her skills and knowledge through her many duties, which include supporting maintenance outages at the station’s generating units and taking care of the plant’s eel ladder, which supports the migration of American eels in the river.
