We asked Jill Konorowski, who initiated the " Women in the Trades" initiative at Ontario Power Generation a bit about her journey and the success of this important project.

"Stepping into a male-dominated career can be intimidating. However, my experience has been positive. My coworkers have been supportive, patient, and encouraging; helping me gain experience I initially lacked."

"I want young women to know they are accepted and needed in the trades. When I put together a “Trades Team” for both women-focused and open events, I made sure that it was a team of both men and women to send a clear message: that we work well together, and we support each other. ' said Jill.

Are you interested in apprenticeship?

Employment Ontario helps job seekers, workers and employers with advice, grants and other services around public and private sector employment.

Interested in apprenticeship?
As an apprentice, you learn a skilled trade on the job. You work with and learn from experienced workers and get paid while you do it.

You also learn in a classroom from instructors who know the trade.
This may occur on a college campus or in a union training centre.

For most trades, you work for a year and then switch to studying in class for eight to 12 weeks, full or part-time. It takes between two to five years to complete an apprenticeship.

If you’re in high school
Talk to your teachers and guidance counsellors to help you:

1. find an Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) cooperative education placement

2. take courses that match your career goals
start your journey into the skilled trades through the Specialist High Skills Majors and dual credit programs
