RailFan Enthusiast The love of trains has never ended and now I have the time to spend chasing the trains with cameras. Thanks, and we'll keep chuggin along!

Growing up as a young lad in a small town with a N/S and E/W train tracks crossing in the center of town at the train depot started me on a love of trains at a very young age, always chasing the trains about town. Videos have been posted here and have also created a RailFan Enthusiast page now. I am working on making better videos and interested in trying new things. Hope you like what yo

Sanding flues on steam locomotive D&SNGRR No. 482

Normal firing builds up a layer of material on the inside of the flue's that insulates the hot gases from heating the water correctly. When the engine is worked fairly hard, sand is fed into the firebox door opening and it is drafted up into the flues cleaning out everything that is inside on the walls of the flues. This is really dirty stuff, and it goes up and out the stack if the engine is pulling hard.

Inside the steam locomotive No. 482 on the D&SNGRR – Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad for a ride from Durango to Silverton. Complete ride on our channel. See all the action inside the lead locomotive cab, hear the whistle, see outside views and enjoy the ride. With the addition of steam locomotive No. 476 to help with the larger train and increased passenger count two steam locomotives make their way up the hill.

Epic Train Adventure, 8 days 8 rides, Colorado Rocky Mountains train and locomotive cab rides

With lots of beautiful scenic drives, my weeklong, epic Colorado Rocky Mountains train adventure will forever be a wonderful memory. I drove through many scenic areas of Colorado, but the train rides were unforgettable, with the train rides providing 23 hours of total train riding time, while covering 232 miles of train track. I rode on many tracks built as long ago as the 1880’s to the complete new rebuild, just 2 years ago, at times climbing to over 14,000 feet elevation on the trains. Locomotives I road in spanned from 2 years old to over 100 years old. After the introduction of the 8 trains narratives, we will show some highlights of the train rides in the same order. Long versions of the rides can be found on our YouTube channel.

Highlights of our ride on the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad. Watch the steam locomotive and more, on The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad as it travels on the 8-hour trip, 64-miles between Chama, NM, and Antonito, CO. It crosses the borders of Colorado and New Mexico 11 times as it chugs its way up and over the 10,015 high Cumbres Pass.

In this video, we pass the following locations along the tracks:

Chama - Mile Post 344.1 – Elevation 7,871’ – Settled by 1865, the railroad arrived in 1880 connecting Chama to Antonito. Leaving Chama, right away we cross the Chama River.

Lobato – Location for many Hollywood movies shot.

Lobato Trestle – Mile Post 339.8 – Second highest bridge on the line, 100 feet over Wolf Creek.

Cresco water tank – Mile Post 335.1 – which we stop at to take on needed water.

Windy Point – Mile Post 331.0.

Cumbres - Mile Post 330.6 – highest point on the railroad at 10,015 feet.

Tanglefoot Curve – Mile Post 329.7.

Los Pinos Water Tank – Milepost 325.5.

Los Pinos.

Cascade Trestle – Milepost 320.0 – Highest bridge on the C&TSRR, 137 feet above Cascade Creek.

Osier – Milepost 318.4.

Garfield Monument – Milepost 315.3 – Erected by ticket agents after President James A Garfield assassination in 1881.

Toltec Gorge – Milepost 315.3 – 600 feet above the Rio de Los Pinos.

Rock Tunnel – Milepost 315.2 – Tunnel bored through 360 feet of solid rock.

Grandma & Grandpa Rock.

Phantom Curve – Milepost 312.3 – Named for the ghostly shapes and shadows seen in the locomotive’s headlight at night.

Mud Tunnel – Milepost 311.3 – Unlike Rock Tunnel, requires wooden/metal supports over its entire 342-foot length.

Toltec Siding – Milepost 310.3 – In 1950’s used for long pipe and oil trains.

Sublette – Milepost 306.0 – Home to section gangs. Bunk house, coal storage, waterspout and speeder shed.

Whiplash Curve – Milepost 297.0 – Because steel wheels on steel rails slip on steep hills, the railroad must loop back on itself to gain altitude.

The Georgetown Loop Railroad is a narrow gauge, 3-foot railroad between Georgetown and Silver Plume, Colorado through mountainous terrain along with trestles, cuts, fills and grand loop. Completed in 1884 and considered an engineering marvel for its time. Highlights in this video I call "living on the edge" as it often runs along the gorge edge, covering the complete motor car (pop car/speeder) maintenance-of-way (MOW) ride along in D&SNGRR - Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad No. 9002 from Silverton to Durango. The complete trip on the tracks built in 1882 through the San Juan Mountains covers 45 miles and takes 3.5 hours. We were patrolling the tracks following steam locomotive #476 which assisted the morning train that came up from Durango and returning to the depot alone.

The complete trip can be found in our channel divided into three 1-hour videos. Ride along at the beginning near the river's edge but later the river drops into deep gorge and the view is breathtaking as we run along its edge and final back down into town. Actually, rather thrilling at times. Occasionally we caught up to the steam locomotive but needed to stay back. See the beautiful valley as we make the amazing trip.

Once more with an all-day train adventure yesterday, today, day 8 is a scenic drive day. I decided to take the 4-hour drive going back North and head from Antonito to Georgetown, Colorado to take a ride on the Georgetown Loop Railroad. The drive started out with straight and flat roads through the valley before coming to the rolling, curvy mountain roads. We did end up going the opposite direction on some roads we traveled earlier, once again passing through Leadville and also the Eisenhower Tunnel.

Yesterday being an all-day train adventure, today, day 6 is a scenic drive from Durango to Antonito, Colorado with a ride on the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad tomorrow. It took about 3 hours to make the 160-mile trip, however I made stops at a couple railroad depots along the way. Was a nice 2-night stay at the quaint Steam Train Hotel with enjoyable dining at the Dutch Mill Café across the street
