Highlights of our ride on the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad. Watch the steam locomotive and more, on The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad as it travels on the 8-hour trip, 64-miles between Chama, NM, and Antonito, CO. It crosses the borders of Colorado and New Mexico 11 times as it chugs its way up and over the 10,015 high Cumbres Pass.
In this video, we pass the following locations along the tracks:
Chama - Mile Post 344.1 – Elevation 7,871’ – Settled by 1865, the railroad arrived in 1880 connecting Chama to Antonito. Leaving Chama, right away we cross the Chama River.
Lobato – Location for many Hollywood movies shot.
Lobato Trestle – Mile Post 339.8 – Second highest bridge on the line, 100 feet over Wolf Creek.
Cresco water tank – Mile Post 335.1 – which we stop at to take on needed water.
Windy Point – Mile Post 331.0.
Cumbres - Mile Post 330.6 – highest point on the railroad at 10,015 feet.
Tanglefoot Curve – Mile Post 329.7.
Los Pinos Water Tank – Milepost 325.5.
Los Pinos.
Cascade Trestle – Milepost 320.0 – Highest bridge on the C&TSRR, 137 feet above Cascade Creek.
Osier – Milepost 318.4.
Garfield Monument – Milepost 315.3 – Erected by ticket agents after President James A Garfield assassination in 1881.
Toltec Gorge – Milepost 315.3 – 600 feet above the Rio de Los Pinos.
Rock Tunnel – Milepost 315.2 – Tunnel bored through 360 feet of solid rock.
Grandma & Grandpa Rock.
Phantom Curve – Milepost 312.3 – Named for the ghostly shapes and shadows seen in the locomotive’s headlight at night.
Mud Tunnel – Milepost 311.3 – Unlike Rock Tunnel, requires wooden/metal supports over its entire 342-foot length.
Toltec Siding – Milepost 310.3 – In 1950’s used for long pipe and oil trains.
Sublette – Milepost 306.0 – Home to section gangs. Bunk house, coal storage, waterspout and speeder shed.
Whiplash Curve – Milepost 297.0 – Because steel wheels on steel rails slip on steep hills, the railroad must loop back on itself to gain altitude.
