The Modest vs The Immodest -

The dichotomy of the “Sanskaari” and “Vampy”, the “Party Girl” and “Parvaati”; the binary of the modest versus the immodest is a subtle but ever-present trope in Hindi Cinema. The “Vamp”, “Vixen”, “Party Girl”, or the “Home-Wrecker” is usually clad in “revealing” clothes with a dark palette, darker make-up, and is shown to be an outspoken personality. On the other hand, the “Sanskaari Good Girl” is depicted in ethnic clothing, lighter colour palettes, and as a demure shy girl who goes to the temple ever so often.
It’s interesting to think about this because it pushes a binary of bad vs good. Subduedness, quietness, martyrdom of self are seen as desirable. Being open about one’s desires, doing things in self-interest and refusing to be shut down by society’s rules are the anti-hero/heroine traits. By design, the lead character has a brief affair with the open and expressive persona at first, but only takes the modest and quiet persona home to meet mom.

It’s time we destroy this dichotomy and let characters be more than just reduced labels.

Body Shaming :-

“Fatty”, “Chashmish”, “Kaalu”.
We’ve heard all these terms being used in Hindi Cinema frequently, and often carelessly. What starts as a joke, a comedic relief or a crutch for the protagonist to further their own character development, leaves behind a trace of insecurities and negative body image issues. Whether it’s Rohan’s transformation from “Laddoo” to a conventionally attractive man in “Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham”, or Sweetu’s character in “Kal Ho Na Ho” pinned as the bullied side character. These patterns have existed in Cinema and it’s time we push past the notion that being attractive or of a certain shape and size doesn’t make a character any more or less interesting.

Toxic Relationships :-

“Your NO also hides a YES.”
“I’ll never stop chasing you, even if it kills me.”
“Every step in life, you’ll find me right there, no matter where you are or who you’re with.”
“If you can’t be with me, I won’t let you be with anyone else.”

All of these grand promises of love and bonds that’ll never break, they sound enticing don’t they? Except that in real life, these aren’t as exciting as they are portrayed. Hindi Cinema continually glorifies possessive behaviour, stalking, even violence towards your partner, all in the name of “Love”. Is this the kind of example we want to follow when it comes to setting healthy boundaries in a relationship? If Kundan from “Raanjhanaa” decides to make you his life’s mission or Kabir Singh decides to proclaim you as his one true love and exhibits violent behaviour if you disagree with him, will it seem all that romantic? Or will it be a violation of your personal boundaries?
Lack of consent is so yesterday. We need to exemplify healthy and respectful relationship dynamics to set the right tone for the upcoming generation of movie-goers.
