Podcasts can make a difference.

After 23 years behind bars, Adnan Syed will be released. On Monday, a Maryland judge overturned Syed's first-degree murder conviction for the 1999 death of Hae Min Lee. Syed has maintained his innocence throughout the years, and his lawyers have filed multiple motions criticizing aspects of his original trial.

However, Monday's order stemmed from a request by the prosecution, who informed the court that a roughly year-long investigation called the original conviction into question. Prosecutors noted that they uncovered two possible 'alternative suspects,' as well as information that casts doubt on the evidence used to convict him, including cellphone tower data.

Syed’s case gained worldwide attention in 2014, when it was profiled in the first season of the smash-hit podcast ‘Serial.’ Per the Baltimore Sun, prosecutors have 30 days to ask to retry Syed or drop the case altogether.
