The math is in! Overthinking things isn’t worth it. 🧠⚡️ This quote hits home this week as I am totally overthinking the lighting on this spaceship set. 😅🚀

This quote reminded me that procrastination is like chewing gum that tastes amazing and refreshing for a minute.. and then absolutely gross. And I’ve done plenty of research - another piece of gum is not the solution. 😅

It’s chilly outside this morning. This lithograph hangs above “Rattley Joe”, our in-wall heating unit. I sometimes like to sip coffee here at “A Clearing”. I found this print at my dad’s house and am not sure where he got it, but it’s totally him. It takes me away from the city and out into nature. Fresh air and simpler times. I can almost hear the rustling of the pine needles and sounds of water lapping the lakeshore. And then Joe’s thermal couple ignites a flame, sending hot air up into the ductwork. The popping, rattling, and banging of cold metal expanding brings me back to the present. Big city. Full schedule. Time to get to work! 💪☕️🔥🪵🌇🌲

For motivation to run today, I pulled up some of the race photos from my first half marathon in Nov. 💪 It worked! Lunch run scheduled. 🗓

I was more interested in racing cars back in high school, but I think I’d have really enjoyed being on the track team. Runners are such great people. ❤️🏃🏻

Do you get caught up in outcomes? I do sometimes. It’s important to make a plan, set goals, and strive for things, but I’ve found that the end result or situation is never exactly what I originally had in mind. And in instances where I get caught up or precious about “the plan” has more to do with ego than anything. 💪😑

There are so many variables in this awesome universe of ours and no one person can control the way things will go. I read a great quote recently that said something like “Outcomes are not my responsibility. I am only being tasked with doing the best I can when I can.” This mindset leads to greater flexibility and, dare I say, better outcomes? 🙂⚡️

I’m honored to have been a part of the team that delivered the time lapse video for this years Donate Life parade float. 🦁🛶🌹 We had cameras snapping away for several months to capture the construction process. 📷🛠👷🏼I helped manage the cameras during that time and compiled the raw stills to edit the time lapse video.

I put a link to the finished video in my bio if you’d like to check it out.🎬 I came away from this experience with a new found appreciation for the mission and people involved with organ eye and tissue donation. ❤️✅

Have you ever taken inventory of your values? I’ve been revisiting mine this week - it’s been tough! Especially ranking them. 😬

We use our values to make sound decisions in life. When I get stuck or feel like somethings “off” in a situation, it’s usually because I haven’t clarified the values in play, or I’m using an unhelpful value (one that relies on external things/people), or I’m just plain going against my values. 🌪😬🌪

A few of mine: creativity, mindfulness, flexibility, learning, self-expression, humor, sense of wonder/adventure

Oh.. and good coffee. ☕️😉 I’d enjoy reading yours. Come on… at least give me one.⚡️🙂

My dad left this realm 5 years ago today, so I thought I’d share a joke(?) he delivered completely dead pan when I was a kid, leaving my brothers and I to wonder if even he was in on it. 😉❤️

I’m grateful for his humor and find that it lives on in me from time to time. 🙂⚡️

It’s been a busy week over here editing time lapse footage taken at the various Rose Parade float construction facilities. We’ve had these cameras snapping away for months capturing the float building process. It’s pretty amazing to see what these talented crews can create. 🛠🎨

If you see a time lapse clip during the New Years day parade coverage, there is a chance I was involved setting up the camera and editing it! 👨🏻‍💻🌹❤️

Swipe to see one of the time lapse camera rigs. I install these 20 around feet high on a pole using a fork lift. It took a little getting used to at first because the whole platform sways back and forth while working. 😅Now I just pretend it’s a pirate ship. 📷🏴‍☠️😉

Merry Xmas eve everyone!🎄The 12th and final tip of this series is probably the most powerful yet. 😉 How not to blow a circuit breaker during a photo/video shoot (or really anywhere else). ⚡️🔌🎄

Film sets and photo/recording studios present an environment where multiple people bring multiple devices together and plug them in all “willy nilly”. Lights, computers, hair dryers, haze machines, chargers, coffee machines, microwaves, and toasters (hey, sometimes you’ve just got to have bagels, amiright?). 🥯

Hearing “Uh oh.. we just blew the breaker” in a dark room is common on set. You don’t have to be an electrician to follow one simple rule to keep the lights on and people caffinated. 💡☕️

THE SAFETY POWER RULE: Add up the wattages of everything being plugged into a circuit and divide it by 100. The result must not exceed the Amperage (A) rating of the circuit. This is typically 20A. Some old houses have circuits rated for 15A.*

*For US/Canada electrical systems. In Europe, divide by 220.

Some common wattage (W) values in the US:
LED Light Bulb: 10-15W
iPhone charger: 20W
String of 100 incandescent Xmas lights: 41W
Incandescent Light Bulb: 40W-120W
Laptop Charger: 80-120W
Toaster, Hair Dryer, Space Heater: 1000-1800W
Coffee Maker, Microwave: 800-1500W
Film production LED panel: 300-800W
Film production Tungsten light: 1K - 1000W, 2K = 2000W, etc.

Example: If you have a 1200W hair dryer, 1000W coffee machine, and are charging two 20W iPhones for a total of 2240W. Divided by 100 equals 22.4. This is higher than a standard 20A circuit - so we’re likely trip the circuit breaker. Move the high wattage items to separate circuits to distribute the load. 🤓

This eleventh “12 days of Xmas” tip is one of my favorites: How to make creative shapes appear in the “out of focus” highlights of a photo or video. This is a creative way to jazz up the background of portraits and product shoots. 📷

Most of the time, blurry lights and reflective bits appear as circles because that’s the shape of the lens opening. By placing a cut-out of a different shape (in this case - a cat), in front of the lens, the out of focus highlights on our mini Xmas tree are transformed. 🐈‍⬛🎄

This will be hard to do with a phone camera, as the lens is quite small. On my DSLR, I took a clear screw-on UV filter and taped the shape to the front. Notice the cut-out needs to be upside down.🙃

Have fun experimenting! DM me for further help.💡

Hey friends! 👋 Todays tip is a DIY laptop stand that I made out of a free Medium sized USPS Priority Mail box. I spend a lot of time here at the editing desk, so being able to look straight ahead is a lot better for my neck. 😅

Something about building my own felt right for this creative space, plus I try to limit the amount of metal and plastic I order from Amazon. I got the design over at https://www.freelaptopstand.com. They have a cool wood/CNC version there too. I might try that next. Let me know if you make one too. 👍

On the 7th day of Christmas, I give to thee: How to record production quality audio using your iPhone or iPad. Use this to record that voice over track, your NPR interview, podcast audio, or that family singalong over the holidays. 🎶

You’ll be using the built-in Voice Memo app for this. The trick is to toggle the record settings to “Lossless Audio”. The resulting file sizes are larger, so remember to toggle it back to default to resume normal lower quality daily use.
Once recorded, you can Air Drop or Text the memo file to your Mac for editing the audio as needed. 🔉

Swipe through the images to find the “Lossless” setting. ✅

Some idea starters:
- Get a lavaliere mic for your phone and place it in your back pocket for recording on the go.
- Record in a closet to keep the echo down
- Pick up a “hot shoe” mount for your DSLR camera to mount your phone recorder up top.

Tip 6 of this twelve days of Xmas series. Half way done! 🎄

Today I’ll show you how I download Youtube videos. I often use this when sourcing client footage for editing work, obtaining animation references, or to get a copy of a project that I was a part of and didn’t get sent the final edit. 😎

Security note: There are websites that claim to do this, but I’ve found them to be full of pop-ups and other shady stuff. The “youtube-dl” method I’ve outlined below is the safest way. 👍

1.) Install “youtube-dl” from https://yt-dl.org
(Mac users type the UNIX instructions into the Terminal app)
2.) Browse to a Youtube video. Click share. Copy the link.
3.) Open terminal (Mac) or command prompt (Windows).
4.) Type “youtube-dl” followed by the Youtube link.
5.) Press Enter/Return. Celebrate.

And yes - this does involve using the MacOS Terminal (or Windows command prompt). You can do it! 💪

I hope you all had a good week. I thought today I’d share a tip to improve your indoor photo and video lighting. If you’re going for a neutral look, you’ll want to match the lighting color temperatures in the space as much as possible. It all starts with being aware of the light sources in play. Windows, light fixtures, screens, and flames are probably the most common.

Here is a list of light sources and color temperatures measured in Kelvin (K). Notice that the lower numbers are warm and higher numbers cool.

🕯Candle flame - 1000-2000K
🌅Sunset/Sunrise - 2000-2700K
💡”Warm white” bulbs - 2700K-3200K
☀️Daylight & “Cool white” bulbs - 4000-5600K
☁️Clouds/Shade & computer screens- 6000K and up

Are you near a daytime window? Turn off those yellowish warm lights nearby. On a video call at night? Remember that your screen is lighting your face with cool blue. Turn off any warm lights nearby or warm up your device screen with “night mode” to match. Buying lights for holiday decorations? Read the box and match the temperature of existing lights in the room. Your camera will thank you. 😎

On the 4th day of Xmas, here’s my tip for you: One clothing pin! One clothing pin, caffeine trick, an edit timing tip, and some folders to keep things clean. 🎶

Today’s tip is my trusty clothespin we**am cover. It acts as a safeguard against surprise camera activations in meetings. I prefer to curate the background clutter a bit before going “live”.
⛄️🤖📷👨🏻‍💻🧰🛠🎥

Added bonus? Using a clothespin may foster a dry sense of humor in all of your conference calls! 🙄

👋12 days of Xmas tip #3! Have you ever been uploading a large file or rendering a project and returned to find your Mac asleep? Thus needing to start the process all over again? 🤨

I’ve got you covered. Run the built-in “caffeinate” command in the Terminal app to keep your Mac awake. ☕️💪 Simply type the command as shown and specify the number of seconds to stay awake.😎

I use this one daily. So much so, that I created an Automator app to make it a little quicker to launch. DM me if you’d like some help. ⚡️

Hi! 👋 Tip #2 in this 12 days of xmas series: How to edit video in synch with music beats (or any other sound). 👨🏻‍💻🎶🎬

After years of editing music videos, I’ve figured out that in order to make something in a video appear to happen in sync with a sound, the viewer needs to see it about 2 frames before the sound (drum hit, lip movement, guitar strum, foot step) is heard. 🥁👄🎸👣🚶‍♀️

Heyo! For the twelve days of Christmas, I’ll be sharing one tech tip per day through the 24th. 🎄 They will be things I’ve picked up over many years in the creative field and continue to use regularly. My hope is that you’ll get more utility out of these than birds and pear trees. 🕊🍐🌳

Today’s tip deals with project organization on a Mac. Having a repeatable system for arranging project files saves me time, improves consistency, and just feels more professional. I use an inexpensive app on the Mac App Store called “Client Folder Maker” and absolutely love it. You can create presets for folder layouts with custom names and colors. It’s the first app I launch when beginning work on something new. 🎬

This quote really got me thinking this morning about the word “income” in a non-money context. I’ve had long conversations with friends about keeping an eye on our creative input to output ratio. ☕️🧐 To regularly ask: Am I ingesting more information than I’m outputting creatively?

Informational income - watching movies, videos, posts and reading books is entertaining, inspiring and creates an important sense of connection to our universal creative community. Wouldn’t it be cool though if we worked more on our creative outcome than creative income?⚡️

Easy right? 😆 I’ll keep trying if you do. To progress! 📈😉🚀

The week is almost over! I hope you’re not having trouble staying focused like I am today. 😅 I present to you my list of top three focus robbers. I already listened to the news this morning, so I guess I’d better balance a cup of drinking water on my head. 😉💦

Side note - I could totally get into a show called “Focus Robbers” where a team of masterminds orchestrate really distracting heists? 🤷🏻‍♂️

Ok.. back to work.👨🏻‍💻

I celebrated a birthday over the weekend and 2021 is growing to a close. 🎉 ⏳
Since around the period this 2nd photo was taken, the passage of time has bothered me a bit. Why couldn’t things be like the good ol’ days again? My mom would remind me that this time right now IS the good ‘ol days. I was skeptical, but as usual - moms are right. ⚡️
So I’ll try to keep my eyes off of the watch, unless of course some math needs to be done. ⌚️😉

It’s kind of cool to imagine a class of bus drivers watching a safety video I edited and hearing my voice on it. 🌨🚍☃️

I also learned the correct spelling of “inclement” on this job. 🤔

And for my tour bus driving musician friends out there - do NOT continue to spin tires! 🚌🔥

18/11/2021

This quote his me this morning as I reflected on my time working in the film industry, but I think it applies to all relationships. I sometimes find myself in this uncomfortable “icky” situation, where I’m wasting time and energy agonizing over a proposal before sending it into the abyss or working below rate to get hired again. At the core of this seems to be me giving too much attention to those self-doubt thoughts we all have. I think the antidote is to stay aware of my values and consider the balance of a relationship or situation before prioritizing it. 🧠⚡️
