When we talk about CKD and those struggling with kidney health, we most often discuss topics related to healthcare and the steps people can take to maintain kidney function through lifestyle, nutrition, and/or medication.

One area that gets considerably less attention is the impact of a CKD diagnoses on our loved ones, particularly our significant other.

Living with CKD, like with any chronic disease, can put considerable strain on a relationship. Adopting a kidney-friendly daily routine can be a major disruption to the life one is accustomed to and treatments for later stages of CKD are pervasive and draining, all of which can lead to a great deal of stress. This tension is not lost on loved ones, who often take on the role of caretaker by necessity.

Topic: The Importance of Handwashing in the Dialysis Unit

STOP, and ask to wash hands!
Don't be afraid to ask, just ask if your technician wouldn't mind washing their hands before they touch you or your equipment. You are simply being cautious, this is perfectly reasonable in the best interest of your health!

Most germs that cause serious infections in healthcare are spread by people’s actions. That’s no different in the dialysis setting. Patients who undergo hemodialysis have a higher risk of infection, due to the following factors: frequent use of catheter or insertion of needles to access the bloodstream, weakened immune systems and frequent hospitalizations and surgery.

Up to 1 in 5 patients with an infection die within 12 weeks. Hand hygiene is a great way to prevent infections, However, studies show that on average, healthcare providers clean their hands less than half of the time they should. This contributes to the spread of Healthcare -associated infection that affects 1 in 31 hospital patients on any given day.

When Should you perform hand hygiene?
To help reduce the spread of infection in the dialysis clinic staff should perform hand hygiene:
 Before they touch a patient
 Before they inject or infuse a medication
 Before they cannulate a fistula/graft or access a catheter
 After they touch a patient
 After they touch blood, body fluids, mucous membranes, wound dressings, or dialysis fluids
 After they touch medical equipment or other items at the dialysis station
 After they remove gloves.

REMEMBER: PERFORM HAND HYGIENE BETWEEN EACH PATIENT OR STATION.
