The 'Last Train to Warburton' rolls into Ringwood on 1 August 1965, hauled by veteran locomotives D3 639 and E1106. 523 passengers packed the train to bursting point, with hundreds more missing out on a ticket for the nostalgic event. Photograph credit: Rev Ian Scutt.

The expected release date for our new book, 'Whistles Through the Tall Timber', is 23 October - just over 7 weeks away. One of my favourite images from the book is this little gem I found at the Upper Yarra Museum several years ago. It was taken at Powelltown in 1913, and shows driver George Riddell standing proudly by his engine, 'Little Yarra', in almost new condition.

Remnant of a once-busy railway. One of the substantial cuttings on the old Powelltown bush line, which saw its last train in 1944.

This photograph, taken near The Bump in 2022, is one of 260 images in our forthcoming publication, 'Whistles Through the Tall Timber'. This book has gone to the printer, and is scheduled for release in late October.

One of our most popular titles, 'A Railway to Cudgewa', has been reprinted and has just been delivered. This hardbound version has been expanded to 136 full colour pages, and printed on heavy art paper.

The spectacular mountain railway from Wodonga to Cudgewa in north eastern Victoria was one of Australia’s truly fascinating branch lines, and the most challenging to operate on the Victorian Railways.

The line became famous for its towering wooden bridges, notoriously steep grades, Hereford cattle and K class steam locomotives. It was a railway of scenic splendour, traversing rich grazing country, thick eucalypt forests and crossing gurgling mountain streams, with the snow-capped peaks of the Kosciuszko Main Range looming off in the distance.

Train running on the Cudgewa branch finished in 1978, closing one of the most interesting chapters in Australian railway history.

'A Railway to Cudgewa' is now available through railway outlets and book shops, or direct through our website at: www.sierraaustralia.com
