Exposed community Jason here. It's been a min since our last episode and just wanted to reach out and say we haven't forgot about you. Hopefully in the next week we can sit down and get something recorded. While year round I work on photography winter has always been more of a learning season. For me its podcasts, lectures, and consuming imagery. One recent podcast talked about writing and another about you don't know what you don't know. You may have heard us talk about making an image instead of taking an image. Well isn't taking an image making an image? Yes, but also no. Clear as mud right? Take this scene for instance. This is an everyday scene that I see often from a window I look out almost daily. However to me this is the kind of scene that sets my brain in motion trying to work out the pattern or composition. I do this daily with or without a camera. Think of this as mental pushups. This isn't a snapshot. I'm actually backing up while getting loaded holding my camera up. I'm waiting for the elements to find their place. My first thing to work out was the truck mirror in the crotch of the shadow. I'm also making small movements paying attention to the reflections in the mirror. I really wanted someone to be framed and silhouetted in the top reflection but sometimes luck isn't there. The strong vertical in the center also helps divide the image into a two point perspective. This holds the viewers attention longer in the frame. Next I knew I wanted the high contrast point of the light an shadow to just about touch the left edge. This creates a visual tension along with the heavy shadow to offset the visual weight of the truck and natural light on the right side. Small details like the separation of the light post and door can help make or break an image. The small details matter. If you go through my work you'll notice how much I use layering with light. Foreground splatters on window create contrast in the highlights and shadows. Not only does this work as texture in the image but fills the frame with visual interest. Next we have a middle ground. The highlight hitting the pole on the left pops against the black and also helps balance the image. Then we move outside to the truck and tank in the distance in this case our background. The more you start to look for these kinds of elements the faster you will grow as a photographer or videographer. There's a world around you just waiting to be discovered. Go find your ordinary and make it extra.
