Vitoria, also known by the Basque name Gasteiz, has historically served as a center of culture and trade - all thanks to its privileged position on the shortest route from the medieval kingdom of Castile to northern Europe. Today's Vitorians are still open to new things, and the proof of this is the international Vitoria-Gasteiz Jazz Festival, which every July brings together both beginners and legendary jazz musicians in the city. Among the latter is the trumpet player Winton Marsalis, who even dedicated his song "Vitoria Suite" to the city. A bronze statue of Marsalis stands in La Florida Park, which is also called the "lungs" of the city.
