Our latest episode just dropped and in it we welcome back who tells us all about the huge collaborative effort to rescue T051 and T049A2 from Barnes Lake in SE Alaska. This is the same lake that some offshore killer whales became stuck in back in 1994!

Thanks for joining us again, Jared, and a huge thanks to you and everyone involved in getting those whales out of the lake.

In mid-August two killer whales were observed to be trapped in Barnes Lake, near the small community of Coffman Cove, in Southeast Alaska. Through an amazing collaboration between residents of Coffman Cove, NOAA, scientists and others, the whales were successfully rescued and guided back to open wat...

Come hang out with us next month!

If you’ve been out with us you’re likely to know that our crew love the whales so much that it feeds into many other aspects of their lives (and free time). Two of them, Jeff and Sara, host After the Breach Podcast where they share recent sightings in the Salish Sea, invite on guests to talk about their research and other projects, and share the stories of the whales with their listeners.

Well, they’re going to be sharing those stories in person next month on their back-to-back all-day tours on September 23rd and 24th. With catered lunches, a ton of on-the-water time, and two passionate hosts to share tips on photography, whale IDs, and more it’s going to be a blast! You can email them directly at [email protected] for more info or to sign up, or reach directly out to us and we’ll get you in touch!

~Meet the Matriline~ This last episode we introduced a new episode “segment” called “Meet the Matriline” and this first one was for T065 “Whidbey II” and her family.

T065 was estimated to have been born before 1968, making her at least 55 years old!

Here’s a photo of the matriarch herself and her presumed son, T063 “Chainsaw” (or “Zorro” if you’re up in Alaska). His dorsal fin is easily recognizable and makes him a favorite for many. He was born in 1978 and though we don’t know with 100% certainty that he is T065’s son their long-term close association makes that a likely relationship.

Our newest episode is up!

This episode is a follow-up to Episode 12 where we talked with Jared Towers () about Type D killer whales and their low genetic diversity. In it we mentioned another paper that looked at the genetic diversity (or potentially the lack thereof) for killer whale populations in the NE Pacific, including Southern Resident killer whales. Joining us again is Monika Wieland-Shields () from to talk about that paper and some of the interesting things that we learned from it.

Our latest episode is live! Episode 12 dives into the mysteries of Type D killer whales with , director of Bay Cetology. This photo is one he took during an unforgettable encounter with these elusive whales in 2019.

We talk about the newly published paper “”Type D” killer whale genomes reveal long-term small population size and low genetic diversity” and what has been learned and what new questions have been sparked as a result.

We greatly appreciate the hard work Jared and his team do (including keeping us updated on what’s going on with the Bigg’s killer whales we frequently see) and we’re beyond excited to have him join us!

On December 11th, 1969, Corky was taken from her family and has been in captivity ever since. She is the longest held captive orca in the world. In honor of her and the fight to bring her home we interviewed Christine Caruso who produced and directed the 2022 award-winning film, Corky. That episode went live this morning.

We highly encourage you to see the film. Truly, we can’t recommend it enough! Christine and everyone involved really gave so much of themselves to create this. It is available on Amazon (US & UK) and Vimeo (rest of the world). Share the film and share Corky’s story. She more than deserves it.

Episode 4 has dropped!

We talk with our friend, Tasli Shaw, about the humpbacks of the Salish Sea! She has worked tirelessly on the catalogue that was just released earlier this year. We discuss the shifting presence of them here, about the threats they face, and of course about some cool encounters we’ve had with them throughout the years. We hope you enjoy!

The return of humpback whales to the Salish Sea after an absence of almost 100 years is absolutely incredible. It is a story we love to share when we are out on the water on our whale watching tours.
