Have you ever been to a bothy? A bothy is a small hut/refuge that is usually used by hikers to seek shelter or as a base for multi-day hikes. There are many of them dotted around the UK but there are quite a few based in Scotland. While many of them are very remote and involve a very long walk to reach, there are a few which are more accessible, such as Ryvoan Bothy.
Ryvoan bothy is the perfect beginner bothy in the Cairngorms as it is only a short easy walk to get there. It has no running water, toilets or electricity but it is the perfect escape into nature with logs for the fire and a beautiful view.
Bothies are a wonderful part of our history and continues to be used by hikers today so it’s important that we take care of them. If you plan to camp in a bothy, make sure to take a sleeping mat, sleeping bag and layers as they are still very cold in the winter and it is also a good idea to carry a tent as they can get very busy and you may have to pitch a tent instead. Most importantly, make sure you leave no trace by taking your rubbish home and keeping it tidy for the next visitors 🫶🏻
