It's time to hit the museum yo!... Check out what's currently on at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, two exhibitions in particular: Juan de Pareja, Afro-Hispanic Painter, explores "the life and artistic achievements of seventeenth-century Afro-Hispanic painter Juan de Pareja (ca. 1608–1670). Largely known today as the subject of The Met’s iconic portrait by Diego Velázquez, Pareja—who was born in Antequera, Spain—was enslaved in Velázquez’s studio for over two decades before becoming an artist in his own right. This presentation is the first to tell his story and examine the ways in which enslaved artisanal labor and a multiracial society are inextricably linked with the art and material culture of Spain’s “Golden Age.”

RIP Dino Danelli - underrated drummer for the underrated 60's group, The Rascals. A great band, straddling rock, pop and soul. Bunch of classics. Here, live on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1967, is probably the biggest one - some soulful, feel-good Groovin':

Within a year or two of their passing, Lester Young and Billie Holiday reunited for the first time in many years to record this Holiday-penned blues. It was an all-star, live session and we are blessed that it was filmed. Pres' solo at 2:41, and Lady Day's reaction to it - what can you say?

We’re late to mention this - but 2022 is the centennial of the birth of the most-famous-of-the-Beat-writers, Jack Kerouac, and his hometown of Lowell, MA has organized a major celebration of his life’s work. Featuring music, poetry readings, films, jam sessions and all manner of tours, this cultural party is not to be missed. Highlights include a Friday night performance by the legendary musician, David Amram, who worked with Kerouac and was his friend back in their 1950’s and 60’s NYC days. Amram also hosts a jam/poetry/prose slam over the weekend, and the many luminaries reading and interpreting Jack include Brian Hassett, whose take on it all brings it up to the moment. If you can get to Lowell, MA this weekend you won’t be disappointed.

Brice Marden and Ancient Greece ⬇️

Ancient Greece is not necessarily an obvious touchstone for modernist, and sometimes minimalist painter Brice Marden's work, but this show aims to demystify this relationship. It is refreshing to feel the non-American influences in this quintessentially American artist's work, and his career stands out largely as a result of this. Catch this show if you can!

LEON RUSSELL & GLEN CAMPBELL

These guys, both fairly recently departed, had giant solo careers after having made their bones as studio musicians in the famed Wrecking Crew in L.A., playing on literally hundreds of hits. And yet their individual styles were absolutely unmistakeable, and their playing and singing and writing, "off the charts". Miss them both, and there is no one around today who can fill their shoes.

Brazilian musicians Cainã Cavalcante and Anna Setton are a dream duo...and together they recorded a sublime rendition of "Tenho Sede." Cainã makes the most intricate guitar work seem so effortless (check out how he shreds that intro!), and Anna's voice has it's own unique heart-melting magic. When these two put their talents together, the result is a sound that is both authentic and fresh. (LT)

"Aquarela do Brasil" translates to "Watercolors of Brazil." This song was written by Ary Barroso in 1939 during a rainstorm about the greatness, the value and the magic of the land in Brazil. Here is Ziq Street artist Aline Melo with a beautiful rendition of this song about her home country, live from Paris, France.
