Most of the books are now on backers hands, and we’ve had reports of many expeditions launching this week. It is so rewarding to hear the feedback, and see the creatures being created.

I’ve got a bit of an obsession with moths and butterflies. Not sure why. It could be the overarching existential symbolism of these majestic, fragile creatures.

Or it could be because they look awesome.

Can’t wait to see people use the creature creation to make some moths and build some butterflies!

Spotlight on Moment Cards! ⁠
In this spotlight we focus on the 'Use a Skill' action. The use a skill action allows players to use a skill they have learnt from their skill tree, whether it be their Vet skills, Incredizoologist skills, Hunter skills or Trapper skills. ⁠

EXAMPLE: Players when ambushed by a creature were unsure if it was a large or huge creature, and in the first round of combat they tried to trap it with a HUGE trap. The Incredizoolgist used their 'determine the size of a creature' skill in order to determine that it was a LARGE creature, allowing the correct trap to be utilised in the next moment.

Spotlight on Moment Cards! ⁠
In this spotlight we focus on the Improvised Action...action. ⁠
Players may want to do something that is outside the normal scope of the actions, and that is encouraged! It allows game masters (Expedition Leaders) the opportunity to think on their feet with their combat. ⁠

EXAMPLE: A moment of combat was a tad difficult as the expedition team decided to take on a creature they probably shouldn't have. In order to save the party, one player decided to light a fire to try and spook a creature. They eventually lit the fire (it took a finesse roll to see if successful) and then the next round the creature began to run away, ensuring the safety of the party... except that the fire had then reached the tents.

Spotlight on the Moment Cards!
In this spotlight we focus on fighting & combat. There are two options that a moment presents - fire a weapon or unarmed combat. Unarmed combat allows you to pull your punch a little bit, you chose whether to roll a D4 of damage (or if your abilities allow, a higher dice). Firing a weapon means that you automatically hit the target and deal the dice of damage that is assigned to that weapon.

Every player can use D4 weapons, but the HUNTER skill tree allows you to upgrade the power of the weapons you can use, even up to the incredibly powerful 2xD20s worth of damage legendary weapons.

There is no rolling to see if you hit a creature - unless the creature moves or dodges you will hit it! You are trained hunters after all!

But be warned! This game is designed to be incredibly lethal, so use weapons sparingly and intelligently.

EXAMPLE: In one of the first games, the players encountered a majestic stag. The players agreed that they were going to try and trap the stag, but one player after being kicked by it in the first round decided to shoot it with his D10 rifle. His shot went off, and he rolled a 10, killing the creature instantly. It caused quite some tension around the table...

Spotlight on the Moment Cards!⁠
In this spotlight we focus on USE MAGICAE! Magicae is the name given to the flowing magic through the Wyldes. Practitioners of Magicae can use magic to bend time, alter space and call weather. They can shift into other animals, weaponise the magic or use their magic to befriend animals. When used in a moment, they can be utilised to alter the course of rolls or add additional damage or reduce taming thresholds of creatures. ⁠

EXAMPLE: We had a player who slowed time to take three attacks on an enemy before they had their turn. Because there were other players in the vicinity, they were able to include them in the field of time control, and therefore gave all players two extra actions in that moment. A very powerful spell indeed!

Spotlight on the Moment Cards!⁠
In this spotlight we look at the 'Use Ability Card'. Your abilities give you unique edges against creatures in a moment of combat or interaction. Your abilities can be learnt and upgraded throughout the course of the game. ⁠

EXAMPLE: We had a player who was hit at close range by a Hunter who was hunting a Unicorn inside a Wylde just outside of London. The player was hit for a D4 punch, but used the 'punch back' ability they had just learnt to deal a D4 of damage straight back to the hunter, on top of the D6 pistol damage they did to them this turn as well.

Spotlight on the Moment Cards!⁠
In this spotlight we focus on the TRAP action. When faced with a creature that needs trapping, Players must first choose one of their traps to use against a creature - for example Large creatures will require a trap that can trap a large creature. Players who have chosen to trap a creature then make a trapping roll to trigger the trap (each trap has a trapping trigger). ⁠

EXAMPLE: In playtesting, a player wanted to trap a large sized creature (It was a Kelpie from Celtic Mythology). They chose the TRAP action in the first round, but no other player did. The trap triggering roll needed was 15, but as it was only one player and as this player only had a trapping D10 trapping dice, the trap roll was impossible. The next round two other players decided to assist with the Trap triggering rolls, even though their trapping dice were a D4 and D6. The total of their rolls equalled 14, so again not enough to trigger the trap. They continued for two more rounds until they were able to finally trap the creature. ⁠

Once trapped, the creature gets daily attacks against a trap to see if they escape.

The phases of the clock are a core mechanic of Expedition:Incredizoology. Your actions, the creatures who are available to study (or hunt or tame or trap) all depend on the clock.

The Expedition Leader negotiated with players how they use their time, and as a team it is incredibly important that they work together to ensure a successful expedition!
