The one thing everyone said would happen after Russia invaded Ukraine hasn’t — and not in a good way.

A common refrain among politicians and climate leaders since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine was that maybe war would finally wean Europe off Russia’s oil and gas and speed the transition to renewable energy.

Only problem is that nine months later we’re still headed in the opposite direction. We’re staring at a new record for coal usage worldwide and an increase in oil production.

Thrilled to contribute Callaway Climate Insights to Bloomberg Law on the upcoming SEC climate reporting rules.

Upcoming SEC climate-disclosure rules will likely present a major challenge to public companies, according to climate watcher David Callaway. President Biden’s recently released rules for federal contractors signal how the SEC rules might look, he says.

A more appropriate metaphor for the frustration of climate investors around this year’s COP27 summit could not be possible: just a two-hours flight away from the climate conference in Egypt is the World Cup in Qatar. That event is expected to generate 3.6 to 6 million tons of carbon emissions.

The world is stuck on how to find a funding mechanism for wealthy countries to help smaller and poorer ones deal with the ravages of global warming.

President Joe Biden’s big investment deal this week — to help Indonesia transition from coal — is a better answer. Reparations are not viable.

Emboldened by a better-than-expected performance by Democrats in Tuesday’s midterms, as well as Thursday’s bullish inflation numbers, President Joe Biden plans to arrive at COP27 in Egypt Friday with a plan to require almost all federal contractors to slash emissions to within limits tagged by Paris Agreements of 2015.

Renewable stocks, which on Election Day rose amid speculation the Democrats would do better than most polls predicted, soared this morning as signs that inflation is moderating and more voting returns indicating the Democrats might be able to hold the Senate attracted funds to solar companies in particular.

Welcome to Callaway Climate Insights. Week one of COP27 in Egypt is just about over with no sign yet of a definitive compensation deal for small nations.
