I want to say that it has been a pleasure working with local businesses these last few weeks. In every production whether it be photo or video, I have gone above and beyond everything I previously knew and attempting to expand my overall production quality. Why?

As much as it is for my own development, I want to give these businesses the best I can. My motto as a businessowner is “Your success is my success” and my inner artist also gets fueled from this positive and expansive mindset.

is one of the recent restaurant establishments in the area, operated by the owner of and he has an entire lifetime of cuisine experiences under his belt. His newest restaurant has personality for me elevated the sensory experience of asian cuisine and my desire for their food never gets saturated. Check them out if you’re in the area! It is a take-away only restaurant.

The burning sensation in my eyes from having to wake up at 01.30am was surreal and my body wasn’t attuned to it. Nathan was already brewing us coffee and I remembered never before being more coffee thirsty. I could drink the whole pot by myself! Although I was struggling waking up this late/early/vampiric, I was very excited.

It was very night and little was said. knew what was ahead of him and I was thrilled to see another baking session and smell the dough as it rises for success. I was thrilled to see their success grow with each batch, to see the donuts come out fresh and taste better each and every time.

One thing worth mentioning is also that Nathan works with very little mechanical assistance. Old school tools, no mixers, cast iron pans.

Baking away each night while his kids are safe and asleep, in a bakery they built next to their house, in a forestry Vermont. There’s something serene in this entire picture. Something that words can’t fully grasp but it is that same feeling that I feel photography was made for. It was made as another bridge into the realm of magic, when we travel with our eyes open and our mouths shut.

“I want you to look at this because I believe you are able to create something like this if not even better. You’re the most talented person I know.” were the words that would set the tone for my American journey. I knew still very little about what was going to happen with my life, until this gentleman made me realize that we, ourselves, can decide who we want to be rather than being at affect to what happens to us. That we can stand up to life and ride the bull by its horns.

Playing on the screen was Chef’s table Season 1 episode 6, covering the story of a masterchef named . It was a voyage through the art of visual storytelling and it would stick with me forever. I had only slowly begun recording clips on my Nikon but saw something in me that nobody else did at a very vulnerable time in my life. At that time, he was one of the artisan baristas working at - but I knew instantaneously who and what he was. He was a friend masquerading as a stranger barista, a human who believed in other humans, and that evening I had invited him to my house for dinner and he made me watch this episode of Chef’s Table. It was then and there that I saw my calling again - to be a storyteller, a crucial individual that fertilizes the human collective with dreams and visual understanding. I understood there and then that I had been a writer for ten years, a photographer for eight years, and that the next evolutionary step in my storytelling capabilities was going to be moving pictures.

We meet people in different shapes and capacities every day, and every day we can grow from these encounters. For and myself, it has evolved to a symbiotic relationship where his role as a baker, as a husband and as a father has all been intertwined in his very successful business . I have had the honor of creating some of their films. What a full circle! It all started from us watching a chef being filmed in Patagonia on Netflix and two years later it’s me filming as an executive chef of his own business.

Coffee roasting is a delicate science, I learned. There are many factors to be considered to successfully turn a fruit like coffee into the beverage that we have become accustomed and as a culture addictied to. The vast majority of the population considers coffee to be a fuel for their everyday endeavors, like fast food, a quick order to be paid for and consumed. As consumers, we think rarely of the journey a product has made when it falls into our ownership. So, I asked questions about this when I was invited to view a live coffee roasting at . What is a hot, humid and hard-working morning for a coffee farmer family in Guatemala, is a comfortable purchase for us at our local coffe shop. But for me, it was an expansive understanding of how much effort has gone into today’s roast. The heavy duty and delicate complexity of the machine is carefully monitored and operated, making the bean the alchemist’s choice of substance transformation. To successfully bring out the bean’s most potent flavor and essence, temperature and timing is crucial to that of just seconds. The beans have traveled long distances and the coffee shop has abandoned commercial fairytale understandings that fair trade actually is a fair trade. Instead, they have invested their time and money in getting to know the farmers first hand, getting to know their families, their ways of life and their hard work in an industry that exploits poor countries for their merchandise. Carrier Roasting is then, in a sense, political activists: by setting their own standards of how to properly price a product and provide much needed support for people living in more gruesome circumstances than the comfortable lives of the western world. With every roast there is not only an artistic and alchemical result of matter and energy, but there is also a humanitarian relationship that provides care for one another. It is also my sworn testimony and observed understanding that just with everything else that has this much consciousness devoted to an outcome serves to explain why in some products there is a divine and novel blend of flavor and precious result. “Mondays are roast days,” they told me. Having no idea what that looked like, I was intrigued. After all, this was the only coffee shop in the area and by that I meant in the area of rural Vermont. Living in a hamlet named Roxbury while waiting for my green card application to process, I had a 15 minutes drive to . It was well worth it - for each time there would be good music, good vibes, a good influx of interes characters in the shape of customers, and an amazing aromatic sensory voyage of coffee running through my system. Of course I wanted to see what roast days were! This is operating a beautiful piece of roasting machinery by . I would slowly begin to fall in love with this place, and as with anything else where there is love and appreciation, we as humans grow and transform, create and destroy. For me, this meant the ending of a life I had lived for 28 years and the beginning of another life, in rural Vermont, currently observing an artisan coffee shop brewing a fresh batch of coffee beans. It was as if for a moment time stood still, and I was beginning to dream again, and as with every good dream, it made me feel that anything was possible.

There exists a purpose greater than any virtue to your actions, and I have discovered that all of these things come into existence the moment I look into in the eyes of my children, or rather, when they look deeply into mine, it unfolds inside of me.
