Khers Theoú
A.D. 393

They were coming.

Gorgo watched from the steps of the temple, across the marble altar, across the headland, to the waters in the east. The fleet was small — only a dozen vessels — but it was filled with priests and soldiers eager to loot and burn. They flew under the banner of the Emperor, bore his seal; the sad, petty little man, hidden away in his palace in Byzantium.

The Rome of the East, they were calling it.

A new Rome for a new faith.

Gorgo snorted, watching as the first of the ships disappeared from her sight beneath the headland and pulled into the bay far below.

They would need to gather their weapons, disembark, climb the long path up the face of the cliff, winding back and forth.

She still had time. Not much. But enough, if the God was listening.

The wind gusted, catching the long thread of crow feathers woven into her hair. Turning, she pulled her shawl up around her shoulders and retreated into the heart of the temple, weaving in and among the pillars until she reached the wide open space of the interior. The marble was cool beneath her bare feet, and the soft patter of her steps echoed from the walls.

She was alone.

Gorgo looked up at the towering statue of the God.

No. Not alone. Never alone.

Viva lives for three things. One) Flying among the stars. Two) Saving ships and rescuing crews who have become lost or stranded. And three) Her fox, Pandora. …. When Viva comes across a derelict far off the usual space lanes, she thinks it’s just another routine rescue. But only one person has survived in stasis; the rest of the crew is dead. And there is a cargo container of very illegal shiftgems in the hold. So is the man in Viva’s sick bay a smuggler and a murderer? Or is he being set up by the real criminals? And where did those illegal shiftgems come from? Viva needs answers, and that means hitting up the black markets, where she finds yet another sentient awaiting rescue …. One of these days, Viva will stop accumulating life-debts ….

ev0ke: How do you define your personal spiritual practice? Does it have a name or is it more intuitive and eclectic?

Heron Michelle: My occult thealogy and paradigm are Panentheistic and based in Hermetic philosophy, so it could be called “Hermetic Witchcraft” which is inherently eclectic and syncretic. I call this system of Modern Witchcraft “The Pentacle Path” because it focuses on balance of the Five-fold self through the elements of Spirit, Earth, Air, Fire and Water – like the points of the Pentagram. This balancing between inner and outer mysteries, projective and receptive tides of energy, and the repeating life/death/rebirth cycles of nature are furthered throughout the Great Work of Magick. That magick flows throughout the Wheel of the Year, through lunar, and solar celebrations.

Acorns, those small, unassuming fruits (yes, technically they’re a fruit) that fall from mighty oak trees, have played a significant role in human religion and culture for millenia. These tiny “nuts” (as they’re known to most), so commonly depicted on fall décor today to symbolize abundance and the harvest season, were once better known for their connections to strength, endurance, and longevity. For this week’s look at the lore and strange tales of our world, we’ll be focusing on the humble, yet potent, acorn, and all it’s come to represent to our kind across the years.

Interactions between humans and fairies – often occurring by chance or accident – have happened since olden times. While fairy folklore recommends a safe distance, history knows many exceptions to this rule. Fairy doctors, fairy witches, fairy seers – each culture has a name for those who entered fairy partnerships to receive knowledge and prosperity in exchange for service. (Wilby, 2022)

In the past, fairy witches were part of small rural communities, and the local fairy lore formed the basis for their interacting with fairies. Today, people have access to fairy lore from all parts of the world. Easy access to information and traveling faster and farther are the hallmark of this age. Information pools at unprecedented scale and speed, and because of this, similarities and differences that exist between fairies from different cultures quickly weave into new perspectives. Such cross-cultural perspectives are relevant particularly for those seeking connections and partnerships among fairies.

From the archives:

Jane walked through the first glass door of the Females’ House of Nutrition Number Seventeen at precisely twenty hundred hours. As she stood still inside the booth, between the first door and the second (still locked), the metal cold beneath her callused feet, she tried not to sweat, to vomit, to faint, to flee in a panic and return to the residence. To the known, the familiar.

Six minutes. Six long minutes to walk the distance from Husband’s residence to the House of Nutrition. (It had been very hot today. The concrete had still been warm. Bugs has buzzed around her shaved head.) The same distance, the same route, at the same steady pace, at the same time every week for the last three months.

But it had been so much more difficult tonight.

She waited. Waited while the Custodian examined her from the other side of the second door (still locked). She tried to meet the Custodian’s gaze calmly, to not twitch or drop her hands over her belly. To behave exactly as she had once a week, every week, for the last three months.

But it was so much more difficult this time.

Through the windows (and the walls were mostly windows, all the way around, for a female must always be in view of any male who wished to observe her) she could see groups of other females: Wives, Daughters, Free Widows.

November is often seen as a time for celebrating prosperity and abundance, but it’s also the start of what many of us consider the “cozy season”. Even though you’ll likely be fretting about upcoming holidays and gifts, it’s important to take time to remember that you are a small, soft creature in the big scheme of things, and as such, you need a bit of care. Sometimes you don’t know the face of your lover.

I didn’t. Just ghost caresses, phantom servants, a gauzy bed dr**ed in silk where I spilled a single drop of wax.

I waited for a year to see those blond curls, the face between Adonis and Ares, for true love is sweet like flowers, but feverish as war, and the skin of the God of Pain is tan with Grecian sun.

There was a scar on his thigh where it seemed he had poked himself with one of his arrows, but other than that he was perfect, my Eros.

Bound to the Summer Queen, Chase is used to being sent on nearly impossible jobs. Over the many, many years of his service, he has done just about everything for his Queen. But he was rather hoping for a short vacation and a chance to heal after his last mission before she sent him back out into the mortal world again. Unfortunately for Chase, the Queen is not a patient monarch and when something needs to be done she will wield her most effective tool as needed to take care of the matter. Thus Chase finds himself in tiny Leesbridge, Canada, partnered with the mortal social worker/battle mage, Sita Kaswan. Something — maybe fae, maybe something else — is murdering the people of Leesbridge one by one in increasingly oddball and horrific ways. Chase and Sita have to overcome their innate distrust of one another and stop whatever the thing is before it finishes off the people of Leesbridge and moves on to bigger, tastier targets ….

Theodore is a mouse. He is also a thief. He is, in fact, one of the best thieves in Montsedge and, as a member of one particular crew, he puts his skills to good use. With the charming human con artist Castor, the magically-talented Mags, the dragon (and mathematical genius) Phi, the beautiful trans warrior Bella, and the nonbinary fae scout Ena, Theodore works to right wrongs outside of the legal system. There are no kings or lords in Montsedge, or the land of Camorranta at large, but there are greedy and cruel individuals who think of themselves as such. It’s this last subject that’s the focus of this month’s free Writer’s Oracle deck. We’ve tried to focus more on the positive aspects of wealth, as money itself is not evil. When embracing the desire to become a witch, there are a whole host of websites to point you towards how to commune with spirits, how to set up a shrine to a god, or how to begin to practice. Sometimes new practitioners become discouraged when these sites are behind paywalls or require a membership they can’t quite afford at that time.

There’s no shame in asking for financial support to take on students, and no shame in paying for the experience of another, but those with little or no money also should not feel that they are being kept back from their birthright of witchcraft. There are, in fact, a whole host of online resources for modern witches, and we endeavor to present some of the best here.

“Uh, let’s see …. Five down, eight letters, starts with s. Magic man. What?” Anie scratched her cheek with her pencil. “Magic man,” she muttered. “Eh. Well, lessee, what’s five across — ”

“Good evening.”

“Geez!” Anie bolted upright in her chair, legs flying off the desk. Her pencil disappeared somewhere among the cabinets of paperwork, and jackets, shovels, lunch boxes, telephones, and other items that she had collected over the years.

She gaped at the guy through the plastic partition above her desk. Thirtyish, dark hair, fancy suit and tie, green jewel in a tie clip. Anie frowned, not recognizing him — and, really, how had he snuck up on her like that? — and she knew all the regulars who would have a reason to drop by the airfield at this time of night.

“Help you?” she finally asked.

“My apologies — ” His voice echoed weirdly through the plastic, sounding hollow. His gaze dropped to the name sewn onto her cover-alls “ — Anie. I did not mean to disturb you, but I understand that you mistakenly received delivery of a casket earlier today. The remains of Petra Montrose. It was sent from Bali.”

When I was young, I recognized the ways I could help the Earth. I’m not sure if it was because recycling was becoming in vogue or if the pictures of trash and environmental losses made an impression on the younger me, but I was committed (my mom might say OVER-committed) to helping as I could. Many Pagans do not believe death is the end. Whether they have faith that they will be reborn, continue their existence as a spirit alongside their gods, or think their energy is reused over and over in the creation of something larger, many of us have a belief that this life is not all there is. In many ways, this is one of the few belief systems that unite the many branches of Paganism under one umbrella. It is because of this that, when divining truths pertaining to the afterlife and our own descent into the underworld, our ally is to be found not in the Death card … but in the Hanged Man.

Mary Culhaine lived with her father in a little hut on the outskirts of her village. Her father was a simple gravedigger and her mother, though said to be a cunning woman, was long since dead, so the small family lived in poverty. Mary attempted to help supplement the family’s income by being the governess for the children of a wealthy local merchant, but even so, finances were tight.

One night, after sitting down to dinner with her father, she was alarmed to hear a sudden groan from him. “My blackthorn walking stick!” he cried. “It’s the only valuable thing I have, and my own father left it to me! I must have left it in the graveyard and I’ll have to go back for it!”
