Chisamba Lungu breaks his leg and suffers a career-ending injury
BARELY a week after being unveiled as Super Division side Nkwazi player, 2012 Africa Cup-winning midfielder Chisamba Lungu is unlikely to feature for his new club again this year after sustaining a fractured leg during a social football match. Lungu, who joined Nkwazi last week, picked an injury on Sunday while featuring for a โMadalasโ team in Lusaka. Nkwazi secretary Lawrings Tembo confirmed the development in an interview yesterday.
Tembo said the development is a big blow to the team because Chisamba has the experience Nkwazi needed. โIt is a very serious injury though we are still waiting for a report from the medical team,โ Tembo said. โThis is definitely a big blow for us as he came in with the experience and he came in very well in the game against Napsa.

OF ZESCO MISMANAGEMENT
Relaxing on my balcony in Zambia watching ZESCO technicians replace a transformer. Iโm bald, but was damn-near pulling hairs out of my headโฆ17 People performing this simple task from 8am โ itโs 5pm now and they seem far from done. Iโve observed similar tasks in North America performed by 2 men and a specialized truck in under 3 hours.
Thinking to myself, therein lies our problemโฆweโre devoid of a high performance culture; we seem to have no clue about the meaning of Efficiency โ โthe ability to do things right, with a sole purpose of multiplying outputs, rather than the ability to get things doneโ.
I look at the value of a company using a very simple equation โ โHow Much Did We Produce Today รท At What Cost Did We Produce Itโ? In this context, ZESCO is likely paying more in operating costs for every Kilowatt generated if we are to extrapolate this scenario across the boardโฆif their Managers have a Cost Per Kilowatt ($/kW) KPI tracked and monitored daily, they too would be pulling hairs out of the heads.
This case here is why electricity tariffs in Zambia are higher than they shouldโฆZESCO punishing the consumer for its inability to optimize operationsโฆthis could also account for decreased reinvestment capacity and ability to innovateโฆtaxpayers, who are already overburdened with high electricity tariffs, are directly or indirectly paying for the operations of this company, notwithstanding the unpredictability in power supply.
Does ZESCO have an Excellence Program like every 21st century organization? In 1995, General Electric (GE), under CEO Jack Welch adopted Lean Six Sigma from Motorolaโฆit became a corporate religion and optimized ways of working, increasing annual profit by 66%.
Bally will not fix it alone, his appointees need to get onboard now.

ZCA SHOCKED WITH ZNFU
The Zambia Consumer Association is shocked that the Zambia National Farmers Union is offended with the availability of cheaper fresh commodities such as cabbages and tomatoes on the market.
The ZNFU yesterday expressed concern about the dumping of several fresh commodities such as cabbages and tomatoes on the market by some known farmers which is resulting in a drop in commodity prices.
Association Executive Secretary Juba Sakala says the desire of consumers is to have cheaper food on the market and it is unfair for the Union to push for higher food prices on the market.
Mr. Sakala has since commended the farmers who are supplying the fresh commodities on the market to continue as it is helping people to have access to nutritious food.

ZNFU CRIES OUT AFTER TOMATO SUPPLY OUTSTRIPPED DEMAND
The Zambia National Farmers Union-ZNFU have expressed concern that those trading in commodities such as cabbages and tomatoes are facing losses due to oversupply on the market.
ZNFU Media and Public Relations Manager, Kakoma Kaleyi, tells Byta FM News in a statement that a few known farmers are dumping several fresh commodities on the market on a daily basis, causing a significant drop in prices, hence loses.
Kaleyi says many individuals, especially small scale and emergent farmers are been negatively affected by the practice, with some contemplating to stop production altogether.
He has since urged farmers involved in oversupply of vegetables to advance into value addition as opposed to dumping their products at Lusakaโs Soweto Market, Kasumbalesa or on the Copperbelt.
Kaleyi has noted the need to emulate the poultry industry where those with huge volumes are processing while those with smaller numbers are selling live birds.
He adds that ZNFU is working hand in hand with the Council and the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development to formalise and operationalize structured fruits and vegetable markets.
Kaleyi fears that if the never seen before dumping of farm produce by commercial farmers continues, those growing the commodities on a small scale will stop producing, and in the event that big growers face a calamity, there will be a shortage.

I CAN'T TAKE THIS ANYMORE COVERING 16 KILOMETERS EVERYDAY TO GO TO A SCHOOL AM SUPPOSE TO GO TEACH, NEWLY RECRUITED TEACHER RESIGNS
A newly recruited teacher has surrendered his appointment letter to the DEBS in western province of a named district after covering about 16km on foot from a tarred Road to the DEBS office with only coming across an oxcart which unfortunately was going the opposite direction.
The men on the oxcart were happy when they learnt that he was a new teacher from Lusaka who was newly deployed to their district and assured him that had they been going his direction, they would have given him a ride as he was determined to secure accommodation and August salary.
He had to cover another 13km, this time around, on a carrier of a bicycle of a good Samaritan. on his way back, he passed through the DEBS, surrendered his appointment letter and all he said was, "i never thought it was going to be like this, i'll wait for next recruitment, am still young".
He however, thanked the president for the massive recruitment and encouraged the unsuccessful applicants to never loose hope.

POLICE in Lusaka have apprehended three Chinese nationals who are Directors at Yundar Investments situated in Lusaka's Chinika industrial area for unlawfully detaining two workers at the company.
The two workers are said to have been beaten by their Chinese employers using iron rods on suspicions that they stole polythene bags from the company and later locked them in the container which is inside one of the buildings.
Labour Commissioner Givens Mutengwa who was inspecting the premises for compliance levels then received a tip from some workers that some of their colleagues were detained and quickly informed the police who immediately moved in.
The Company's Human Resource Consultant has also been picked by Police.
