Love stories are the most common subject of Hindi films from the word go, but it's not always the romantic love our films explore. We have had sories with all kinds of love, from mother-child love to brother-sister love, devotional love, and even love with animals. Our films have celebrated all kinds of love over the years; one such example of love came in 1964 by the name of "Dosti," which depicts the love between two disabled boys. Dosti took the quantitative friendship to another level, which, even after 60 years since the release of the film, no one has been able to match.

Directed by Satyen Bose and produced by Tarachand Barjatya under his Rajshri banner, "Dosti" is a touching portrayal of friendship and resilience against the backdrop of adversity. Written by "Ban Bhatt, (story)" and Govind Moonis (screenplay and ialogue), The filmnarrates the story of two boys, one blind and the other physically disabled, who form an unbreakable bond of friendship. The film's themes revolve around companionship, the struggles of the less fortunate, and the triumph of the human spirit.

"Dosti" is a heartwarming tale of two boys, Ramu (Sudhir Kumar) and Mohan (Sushil Kumar), who face the harsh realities of life with courage and an unyielding friendship. The film opens with the tragic death of Ramu's father in an industrial accident, which sets off a chain of events leading to more misfortune for the young boy. His mother, overwhelmed by the news, succumbs to an accident, leaving Ramu both orphaned and physically disabled.

As Ramu navigates the streets of Mumbai, he encounters Mohan, a blind boy with a talent for singing. The two form a bond, using their musical abilities to earn a living and survive the city's unforgiving streets. Their friendship is a beacon of hope, showing that even in the darkest times, human connection can bring light and purpose.

The narrative follows their struggles and triumphs as they aspire for a better life. Ramu dreams of continuing his education, while Mohan longs to reunite with his sister, Meena (Uma Rajoo), who moved to Mumbai to work as a nurse. The boys' journey is marked by moments of joy, such as when they befriend a young girl, Manjula, played brilliantly by Baby Farida, who suffers from a heart condition. However, their path is also strewn with challenges, including societal prejudice and personal setbacks.

"Dosti" is not just a story about the hardships faced by the less fortunate; it is a celebration of the human spirit's resilience. It showcases how determination, coupled with the support of a true friend, can help overcome life's obstacles. The film's plot is a testament to the enduring power of friendship and the strength it provides to those who believe in each other.

The technical aspects of "Dosti" are commendable, especially considering the era it was made in. The cinematography by Marshall Braganza captures the essence of Mumbai's streets and the challenges faced by the protagonists. The performances by Sudhir Kumar Sawant and Sushil Kumar are deeply moving, bringing authenticity to their characters' experiences. The film is also enriched by the superb supporting cast, which consists of legendary actors like Leela Chitnis, Leela Mishra, Abhi Bhattacharya, Nana Palsikar, and newcomer Sanjay Khan.

Music plays a central role in "Dosti," both as a narrative device and as a source of emotional depth. The soundtrack, composed by the legendary duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal, features lyrics by Majrooh Sultanpuri and is brought to life by the voice of Mohammed Rafi. "Chahoonga Main Tujhe," a solemn vow of unwavering support and companionship, and "Mera To Jo Bhi Kadam," a declaration of devotion and the presence of a friend in every step of life's journey, are particularly noteworthy for their emotional resonance and have become anthems of friendship over time.

"Jaanewalon Zara Mudke Dekho Mujhe" is a cry of a broken heart, while "Raahi Manwa Dukh Ki Chinta" celebrates the sorrows and struggles of life. Another gem of a song was "Koi Jab Raah Na Paaye," an anthem of never-ending optimism in the face of adversity. The only song in the album sung by Lata Mangeshkar, "Gudiya Kab Tak Na Hasogi," is a tender lullaby that attempts to bring a smile to a saddened face.

"Dosti's" music also benefited immensely from the meaningful lyrics, which perfectly complemented the melodies and heightened the film's emotional impact. The lyrics are a reflection of the film's core themes, exploring the nuances of friendship and the human condition.

"Dosti" went on to become a commercial and critical success, winning six Filmfare Awards and earning a place in the hearts of cinema lovers. Dosti won the Filmfare Award for Best Film, Best Music Director (Laxmikant Pyarelal), and Best Story (Ban Bhatt).
Best Dialogue (Govind Moonis), Best Playback Singer (Mohammad Rafi for the song "Chahoonga Main Tujhe Saanj Savere"), and Best Lyricist (Majrooh Sultanpuri for the song "Chahoonga Main Tujhe Saanj Savere").

Styen Bose was also nominated for the Filmfare Best Director Award. It also stands as one of the most successful films of Satyen Bose's career, establishing him as one of the greats of the medium. Today is the death anniversary of Satyen Bose, and Tasweermhal is remembering him with gratitude for his great services to the cinema.

PS: Just got to know, after our friends Sharmila Ghosh told about "Lalu Bholu" ( 1959). Dosti is actually based on the novel "Lalu Bhulu" by Nihar Ranjan Gupta, the celebrated author. Agradoot directed the Bengali film Lalu Bholu. It was also adapted in Bangladesh in 1983 as Lalu Bholu.
I wonder why Satyen Bose decided to omit that referrence.

The impish smile, a naughty demuner, the other worldly beauty, and on top of that, the "nakhra," which has the ability to kill the faint-hearted. Shyama was one of the most beautiful faces of 1950s and 1960s Hindi cinema, giving us memorable films like Sazaa (1951), Tarana (1951), Aar Paar (1954), Bhabhi (1957), Sharda (1957), and Barsaat Ki Raat (1960).

In the golden era of Hindi films, amidst the glittering stars who graced the silver screen, one name that shone with a unique lustre was Shyama, who was born as Khurshid Akhtar on June 7, 1935, in Lahore. Her family moved to Bombay in the early 1940s.

In 1954, she gets her breakthrough in Guru Dutt’s Aar Paar (1954), in which she plays the spirited daughter of a garage owner who falls for an ex-convict (Guru Dutt) working for her father. The songs "Sun Sun Sun Zalima" and "Ye Lo Main Haari Piya," featuring her, are two of the highlights not only of Shyama’s career but also of Hindi film music.

Although she continues to act in films like Shart (1954) and Dhoop Chhaon (1954), Laadla (1954), Majboori (1954), Khandaan (1955), Musafirkhana (1955), Bhai-Bhai (1956), Chhoo Mantar (1956), Mai Baap (1957), and Mirza Sahiban (1957). Her most acclaimed performance came in the 1957 film "Sharda" with Raj Kapoor and Meena Kumari. Shyama won the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award for her performance in the film.

The same year, she starred in Bhabhi (1957), where she plays a scheming sister-in-law who plots to separate brothers. Some of her other well-known films of the time
