Challenging place this Iceland!

High wind snapped poles in two Hilleberg tunnel tents last night! Our old Quasar was rock solid.

But it was NOISY 💨

Came a day early out of along with loads of others on a very busy boat. A day to recover in Isafjordur then we’re in a new car heading wherever we fancy.

Feels like we’ve squeezed a month of adventure into six days.

Before and After 😁

gravel roads can be quite hard on rental cars.

A lot of driving today. Gale blowing in tomorrow so slight tweak to our hiking plans in reserve, although they might have to change again. Going to be rough on the wee boat!

Once we leave we’ll not mobile signal until Sunday night when we (hopefully) return.

Drive tour to the southern end of Westfjords on roads that make our forest-road look like motorways. Solitary bike packer looked soaked and fed up.

Those puffins are on the western most point of Europe at Látrabjarg cliff. Car goes back tomorrow and the hiking starts.

From 6am teeth brushing while waiting for the Reykjavik airport bus…. to this view from our room, it was quite a first day.

The ‘feel’ here in NW Iceland similar to NW Scotland. Utterly amazing gravel roads but fast drivers, spitting small stones from their tyres, would be like cycling under machine-gun fire.
We’ve two more days exploring in our (slower!) 4x4 and camping, then boat into the wild area we came to hike.

“Good luck with the weather up north”, said the guy who stamped my passport at the Iceland border. After an evening in Reykjavik we’re flying to the Westfjords.

Ride-able gravel plus turn-up-and-go ferries make it unsuitable for vehicles, and the mostly minor roads link some of the best of the glorious west coast. A few things to check and finalise before putting the route live.

Duncan has been a big part of the Scottish climbing scene for years, designing walls, presenting TV programmes and climbing hard. He’s the founder of The Ledge climbing gym in Inverness which is where we recorded this. Now aged sixty two, we sat down to talk motivation, training regime and some of the big injuries he has had to cope with, including a heart attack. Take less - do more. Not only an ultralight philosophy, it's an approach the founder of Gossamer Gear, Glen van Peski, brings to his life. It's also the title of his new book. Glen shares this in a podcast (also in video) twenty years after we last met on our Pacific Crest Trail hike.

20 bike spaces on one train on West Highland Line, between Glasgow and Fort William. Six spaces in regular train - all bookable online.

Currently this unit is only the first train from Fort Bill and last one from Glasgow (it overnights in the highlands). And occasionally doesn’t run because the stock is, I’m told, “unreliable”. Needs more people to use it because it’s a superb way to access adventure!
